Assignment on Hydraulic Structures II

The following general information and specific data are given. In this assignment, each group is supposed
to prepare a report on the required aspects and specify some of the design parameters as requested. Each
group should prepare and submit a report of about 12 to 15 pages explaining the general aspects, some
specific considerations to made in the project and scaled drawings of the requested problems. Each group
will present its work 15 to 20 days after the delivery of the exercises to the students. Each group member
should seriously take part in the work and this will be checked out during the presentation.
1. A barrage is to be constructed on a river having a high flood discharge of about 391.47m3/sec
cumecs , with other important data given as follows:
The crest length of the barrage is fixed to be: 40 m D/s HFL=1971.28m amsl
Permissible afflux: 1m
Pond level: 1969.28m
Stage discharge curve is given in the following figure. Prepare complete hydraulic design for Under
sluice section as well as barrage bay section on the basis of hydraulic jump theory and Khoslas
theory. A safe exit gradient of 1/6 may be assumed.0.5% retrogression and 20% discharge
Concentration may be assumed where non uniform flow is likely to occur. Assume any other data
if not given. The thickness of the barrage should be determined at interval of 5m.

- Design flood discharge = 3000m3/s safe GE = 1/6
-High flood level before const. 200.00 - creep coeff = 10
- FSL of canal = 199.00 - Allowable afflux = 1.0m
- Average bed level = 193 - Allowable afflux = 1,0m
- Retro ration of bed = 0.50m
-Lacey’s silt factor = 1.00
