GENERAL INFORMATION
MACHINE IDENTIFICATION
FRAME SERIAL NUMBER
The frame serial number @ is located on the
right-hand side of the frame (just below the front
-- of the seat).

ENGINE SERIAL NUMBER


The engine serial number @ is located on the
right-hand side of the crankcase.

CHECK

When checking T.O.R.S.:


Be sure the parking brake is applied.
Be sure the throttle lever moves smoothly.
Do not run the engine up t o clutch engagement
r/min. Otherwise, the machine could start mov-
ing forward unexpectedly, which could cause
an accident.

1. Start the engine.

2. Hold the pivot point of the throttle lever away


from the throttle switch @.
3. Press @ the throttle lever gradually.
The water temperature warning light
(VXGOOXTR/SX) or diagnosis indicator light
(MMGOOP) should turn on and off and the
engine should run between 2,800 and 3,000 r/
min.

If the engine does not run between 2,800 and


3,000 r/min, stop the engine by turning the main
switch t o the "OFF" position and check the elec-
trical system.

DRIVE V-BELT

When installing the n e w V-belt, make sure that it


is positioned within the specified distances @
from the edge of the secondary sheave.
If not, the clutch engagement speed w i l l be
changed. The machine may move unexpectedly
when the engine is started.
Adjust the V-belt position b y removing or adding
a spacer @ on each adjusting bolt.
For this adjustment, consult a Yamaha dealer or
another qualified mechanic.

As the V-belt wears, adjustment may be neces-


sary. To ensure proper clutch performance, the
1 V-belt position should be adjusted b y adding a
spacer on each adjusting bolt when the V-belt
position reaches below the edge.

only. Do not force the V-belt between the sheaves;
the sliding and fixed sheave must touch each
other.

thinner or solvent to remove the oil or
grease. Check the primary and secondary
sheaves.

6. Measure:
Drive V-belt length @

DRIVE CHAIN
Oil level inspection

The engine and muffler will be very hot after the


engine has been run. Avoid touching the engine
and muffler while they are still hot with any part
of your body or clothing during inspection or
repair.

1. Place the machine on a level surface.


2. Check:
Oil level
3. Remove:
Muffler spring

Checking steps:
Remove the dipstick @ and wipe it off with a
clean rag.
Reinstall the dipstick.

There is a magnet attached t o the end of the


dipstick. It is used t o remove any metal par-
ticles that may accumulate i n the drive chain
housing. When removing the dipstick be sure
to:
Pull it out slowly and gently so the metal
particles do not fall off the magnet back into
the drive chain housing.
Wipe off the magnet before reinserting the
dipstick into the drive chain housing.

Remove the dipstick and check that the oil is


between the upper and lower levels. If not,
add oil to the upper level.

Make sure that no foreign material enters the


gear case.

Reinstall the dipstick and fit the loop @ of


the dipstick handle onto the projection @ o f
the gear case.

The clutch m a y require tuning depending upon
the area of operation and desired handling char-
acteristics. The clutch can be tuned by changing
engagement and shifting speed. Clutch engage-
ment speed is defined as the engine speed where
the machine first begins t o move f r o m a complete
stop.
Shifting speed is when the machine has been
started at full-throttle from a dead stop and has
- -
travelled 200 300m (650 1,000 ft).
Normally, when a machine reachesshifting speed,
the vehicle speed increases but the engine speed
remains nearly constant. Under unfavorable con-
ditions (wet snow, icy snow, hills, o r rough ter-
rain), however, engine speed m a y decrease after
the shifting speed has been reached.

The reduction ratio of the driven gear to the drive
gear must be set according to the snow condi-
tions. If there are many rough surfaces or
unfavorable snow conditions, the driveldriven
gear ratio should be increased. If the surfaces are
fairly smooth or better snow conditions exist,
decrease the ratio.
