Salamander Identification and Less-invasive Sampling

Research Objectives: Completing DNA isolation of Salamanders with the goal of species
identification as well as finding a less-invasive DNA collection technique. For details and my

Location: Appalachian New River Valley - Selu Conservancy, Radford, VA.
Explored: Bioinformatics, species identification on a physical and molecular level, and DNA
extraction, preservation, amplifying, and isolating.

DNA Isolation Kit Review
Fall 2019, Spring 2020
Research Objectives: To create a peer-reviewed publication for educators including details on
various DNA extraction, isolation, and amplification test kits for comparison purposes. This
process is still in-progress.
Laboratory Research: Extracted DNA from a variety of species and isolating the DNA through
test kits and procedures such as DNeasy, Puregene, “Glass Milk,” “hot shot,” and more.
Extensive PCR and electrophoresis was completed.

Field Biology: Phenology


Spring 2019
Research Objectives: Monitoring the presence and health of plants, animals, and salamanders
in the New River Valley area and submitting data to the National Phenology Network and
Radford University.
Locations: Selu Conservancy and Wildwood Park in Radford, VA, 24141.
Field and laboratory research: Used field cameras, coverboards, and NPN observation
guidelines to collect information on mammals, birds, amphibians, invasive plants, and spring
ephemerals to be submitted. For more information please view my website tabs: “Wildlife

interpretation of results, coverboard procedure and interpretation of results, salamander
