Determines The Intercepts, Zeroes and Assymptotes of
logarithmic functions.
LET US KNOW

This learner activity sheet was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
master how to Determines The Intercepts, Zeroes and Assymptotes of logarithmic
functions.
The scope of this learner activity sheet permits it to be used in many different learning
situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons
are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order in which you read
them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.

The learner activity sheet will focus on the topic on:

Determining the Intercepts, Zeroes and Assymptotes of logarithmic functions.

After going through this learner activity sheet, you are expected to Determines The
Intercepts, Zeroes and Assymptotes of logarithmic functions.

LET US REVIEW
Given the graph of y ¿ log 2 3( x−3) identify the domain and range.

LET US STUDY

x – intercept, y – intercept and Zero of logarithmic equation

The graphical concept of x – and y – intercepts explained by these, x –

intercepts are where the graph crosses the x – axis, , and the y – intercepts are where
the graph crosses the y – axis.
Algebraically, an x – intercept is a point on the graph where y is zero, and y –
intercept is a point on the graph where x is zero.
The zero of a function is the x-value that makes the function equal to 0, that is,
𝑓(𝑥) = 0
Asymptotes of a logarithmic function is always a vertical asymptote, that is x=h
in the function y = log b ( x−h )+ k . It is the line where the graph approaches but never
touches.

3
Example:
Given the graph of f ( x )=log 4 ( x +2)

 The x-intercept is -1 because the graph crosses the x-axis at point (-1,0) or we say
that the zero is 2.

Solving Algebraically:

Let y = 0 ; y = f(x)

0=¿ log 4 ( x+ 2) replacing y by 0

4 0=( x +2) using property of logarithm

1=x +2
x=−1
The x – intercept is -1, consequently, the zero of the logarithmic function is -1.

1
 The y – intercept is because the graph crosses the y axis at point ( 0 , 1/2 )
2
Solving algebraically:

Let x = 0

y=log 4 ( 0+2) replacing x by 0

4 y =2
22 y = 2 changing 4 using base 2

2 y=1 equate their exponent

y=

The y – intercept is

 From the graph, we can see that there is a certain line where the graph
approaches but never touches. That is the vertical line x=-2. Hence, the
asymptote is x=-2. In dealing with the vertical asymptote of a logarithmic
function, it is a must to remember that logarithmic function is not defined
for negative numbers or zero, and the domain of a logarithmic function 𝑓(𝑥) =
𝑥 x is a set of positive real numbers. A logarithmic function will have a
vertical asymptote precisely where its argument (i.e. the quantity inside the
parentheses) is equal to zero.

f ( x )=log 4 ( x +2)

x +2=0
x=−2
Since the logarithmic function is defined for x > -2 , thus, the graph has a
vertical asymptote at x = -2 .
