Due date: Friday February 07, 2020

Q1: a) The temperature was -7oC and it has fallen a further 18oC. What is the temperature
now?

b) A submarine is 23 m below sea level and dives a further 36 m. How deep is it now?

c) A bird flying 9 m above a lake suddenly drops 10:5 m to catch a fish. How far under the surface was the fish?

d) The time of day at any one instant is different depending on where you are in the world. Earth is split up into
different time zones, with Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) being considered zero. Locations to the east of
UTC are ahead of UTC (positive) and locations west of UTC are behind UTC (negative). Some major cities
and their time zones relative to UTC are given below:
i) Write down the cities as they would appear on a horizontal number line, based on their time zone
relative to UTC.

ii) Which two cities have relative time zones with the same absolute value? What does this mean?

iii) Write down the cities in order of the absolute value of their relative time zone, from least to greatest.

iv) Do some research and find cities for which relative time zone has an absolute value between that of
Montreal and San Diego.

Q2: Investigation
A hot air balloon is a lighter-than-air aircraft consisting of a bag, called an
envelope, which contains heated air. Suspended beneath is a gondola or
wicker basket (in some long-distance or high-altitude balloons, a capsule),
which carries passengers and a source of heat, in most cases an open flame
caused by burning liquid propane.
a) Fill in the table that follows. Feel free to do some research if necessary.
Action In what direction does the hot air balloon
move?
Add hot air
Add weight (e.g. sandbag)
Remove (jettison) weight
Remove hot air

b) You are going to represent puffs of air and sandbags with integers. Which one will be represented by
positive integers and which one by negative integers? Explain.

c) Draw a vertical number line that ranges from -10 to 10. Be sure to write down every single number in
this range. Suppose one sandbag and one puff of air each have the same effect on the hot air balloon. If
you start at zero and add two puffs of air, you will go up two values. This can be represented as 0+
(+2)=2. Now that your hot air balloon is at 2, what could you do to return to zero? Find two different
ways and write your results using notation similar to example. Represent these operations on your
number line with your hot air balloon.
Find the values of each of the following.

Write your answers here:

a. _______ g. _______ m. _______
b. _______ h. _______ n. _______
c. _______ i. _______ o. _______
d. _______ j. _______ p. _______
e. _______ k. _______ q. _______
f. _______ l. _______ r. _______

In which of the following situations will the hot air balloon go up?

In which of the following situations will the hot air balloon go down?
If you could represent ‘up’ with either a positive sign or a negative sign, which would you choose?

Write down general rules for how to add and subtract positive and negative integers.
Be sure to use correct mathematical vocabulary.
