Soweto Students
Many of the black Africans who commute to work in the South African city of Johannesburg live in the adjoining city of Soweto. Soweto residents, who represent a number of ethnic groups, were in the forefront of those demanding racial equality in South Africa. The
city is famous for the massive 1976 political uprising known as the Soweto Rebellion.
South African Ethnic Groups
South Africa's multiracial and multiethnic population is predominantly black African. Only 13 percent of the country's population is white, with Asians and Coloureds (people of mixed race) making up even smaller percentages. Black Africans belong to several distinct
ethnic groups, of which the Zulu, North Sotho, South Sotho, Tswana, Tsonga (Shangaan-Tsonga), South Ndebele, and Venda are the most prominent. The Zulu, the largest of these groups, comprises about 22 percent of the total population, outnumbering whites by a
considerable margin. South Africa recognizes 11 official languages, one for each of the black ethnic groups as well as English and Afrikaans.

This Ndebele woman in South Africa has adorned herself with numerous necklaces, and ankle and wrist bracelets. Most Ndebele people live in Zimbabwe and in northeastern South Africa.
