01 Checkpoint 3 – Purposive Communication 2

1. Are Jasper’s audience ethical listeners? Justify your answer.

It is clear that Jasper’s audience are not ethical listeners. The way they have been using
their phones during the speech of their classmate, and the other girls who are only
paying attention to fixing their hair. Another thing is the posting the clip of Jasper’s
presentation without his permission. These are the proof that his classmates are not an
ethical listeners. They did not consider Jasper’s effort and feelings about presenting in
front of them. They did not respect his speech and his consent in posting a clip of his
presentation as well as saying bad comments about it.

2. How should Jasper’s classmates behave during his speech?

They should have behaved ethically by paying close attention to the speaker. Simply
listening and giving a good vibes for their classmate presenting in front of the class
should be done. They should not do any other things that distract Jasper from his
speech as well as not posting video clips of him especially without his permission.

3. What could be the repercussions of uploading a part of Jasper’s speech on social

media without his permission?

The students who uploaded clip Jasper’s speech on social media could be suspended
in school for doing so. But taking it on legal action would be difficult since it is a public
speaking thus it does not need a certain consent or permission, unless it is ban to use
their smartphones during class. They could also face the anti-bullying law, if comments
and context of the clips included inappropriate comments about Jasper.

4. Are the peer critiques provided to the speaker sufficient? What is lacking in their
feedback?

The feedbacks that Jasper’s classmate provided was insufficient. It was unethical
feedback for just giving out a phrase about his speech and did not use a formal and
ethical feedback that should also criticized with their critical listening. They just simply
gave a phrase that seems to plain for someone who should have listened to the speech
and the topic.
