Adaptation and Modification – Ariel Su

I have had some experiences in modifying programs to fit the needs of my students. The students that I
modified for were Code D (Chronic Health) and Code C (Moderate to Profound Intellectual Disability). They
were about the same level in terms of their academics, so they had a buddy when working on their modified
program. Both of them had difficulties in their written output as well as verbal. The way that both of them
preferred to share their work was through technology. So that’s the area I am most familiar with.

Modifications:
- Chunking work
- Scribing

Environmental Adaptations:
- Visual directions / cues
- Noise cancelling headphones
- Flexible seating / working area
- Fidget tools

Curricular Adaptations:
- Oral vs. written test / instructions
- Graphic organizers
- Manipulatives / models
- Demonstration of understanding in different modes
- Flexible timeline / due dates
- Pre-teaching important terms / vocabulary
- Breaking down tasks into digestible chunks
- Reduced workload
- Typing / video rather than writing

Assistive technology:
- Speech to text
- Typing rather than writing
- Online programs: Epic!, RazKids
- Audiobooks
