Elements and Principles of Design: Grade 1: Line – curved Colour – warm and cool colours Contrast – light/dark Grade 2: Shape and Form – symmetrical shapes and forms Colour – secondary colours Repetition and Rhythm – repetition of colour and shape in patterns Grade 3: Shape and Form – symmetrical and asymmetrical shapes and forms Variety – strong contrasts and colours to create interest. Grade 4: Lines – repetition of lines to create visual rhythm. Space – positive and negative space in art work Value – mixing of shades Expectations: D1.1 – Create two-dimensional works of art that express feelings and ideas inspired by personal experiences. D1.4 – Use a variety of materials, tools and techniques to respond to design challenges. D2.1 -Express their feelings and ideas about art works and art experiences. D2.2 – Express how elements of design are used to communicate meaning or in their own and others' art works. Materials: Paper, pencil, pencil crayons, colour wheel Procedure: Using the colour wheel, talk about the different colour elements for each grade to help students choose which colours they will use for their art work. Fold the paper in half, corner to corner in both directions. Students choose the word they are going to write (dad, love, a name, etc) in one of the triangles. Using a pencil, lightly draw the middle letter of the word in capital bubble or block letters. The letter should touch the bottom of the paper and the creases made by the fold at the top of the triangle. Continue drawing the other letters in the same way working from the middle toward the outside of the paper. Once the letters are finished to student satisfaction, trace over them, pressing hard with the pencil to create a dark outline. Fold the paper on the crease line and using your fingernail rub the letters to transfer them to the other triangles. Once all 4 triangles have the word on them, trace around them again with the pencil so they match. Students then use the pencil crayons to colour in the letters and the background with the colours they have already chosen. Modifications/Differentiation: Students choose colours based on the elements of design for each grade level Students can use basic lettering rather than bubble or block letters Have students pick a shorter word with an odd number of letters Follow-up: Students will present their completed artwork and describe the elements of design they used to create their piece.
