 P osey County, Indiana is an ideal landing place for travelers.
It has been for thousands of years.
A bird’s-eye view of middle-America shows two great rivers
tracing hundreds of miles of landscape, literally carving out the
borders of Midwest states.
The junction where those rivers meet is Posey County, and it’s
a place that’s been chosen over and over as a perfect jumping-
off point. The waterways and lush resources attracted pre-
Columbian native settlers, early explorers and scholars, vast
farming operations, industries and pioneers of all sorts.
Known as a place of wild abundance and surprisingly big
ideas, Posey County has hosted experiments in spirit, science,
industry, art and agriculture that have raised eyebrows and
global consciousness.
Today, it’s still a place where people gather near the rivers to
work and play, to bikeride, birdwatch, fish, hunt and hike. We
invite you to soak up history in our walkable towns and sample
farm fresh foods…buy some art or rent a golf cart. If you can

fields, and serenity. More recently, they

at these recent additions, but first, let’s

meet some farmers.

7 Centuries of Agriculture
Many Americans start counting our years from
1776. The Posey County area has been farmed for
over 700 years! People of the Mississippian culture,
or Native American “Mound Builders,” were an
innovative group and the region’s first farmers.
Corn was a staple crop.
Doubtless, part of the attraction was not one, but
two rivers, the Ohio and the Wabash. The rivers
were sources of water, food, and transportation.
New people have always found their way here.
After the Mound Builders, other tribes moved
into the area, built villages of log houses, planted
orchards, and cultivated plantations.1 They
developed commodity specialties and traded
among tribes. A new wave of people was coming.
Shall We Gather at the River?
Around the early 1800s, settlers of European
descent began migrating to present-day Posey
County. Once again, people traveled on, and
settled by, the rivers. First in Mt. Vernon, then in
New Harmony.

Harmonie / New Harmony
Brief History
Let’s move along to the Wabash. Today’s New
Harmony was the second town settled in Posey
County. But it was not New when it was new.
Harmony is an appropriate name for a town
created specifically to be a spiritual community.
It was founded in 1814 by a group of 800 Pietists
from Württemberg, Germany who purchased
nearly 30,000 acres beside the Indiana Territory’s
Wabash River.
The Harmonie Society was led by George Rapp.
Their literal interpretation of biblical text, combined
with their interpretation of current world events,
led them to believe that a Second Coming of
Jesus Christ was imminent. As a society and as
individuals, they pursued Christian perfection
through every aspect of their daily conduct. To that
end, they created a highly ordered and productive
community at New Harmony.
The community was entirely self-sufficient and
produced a wide variety of goods that were
recognized worldwide for their fine quality.
Harmonist wares were sold throughout the
United States and overseas in the British Isles, the
Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany. In 1825,
the Harmonists relocated to Pennsylvania, site of
their first community in North America.

In 1825, with his business partner, William
Maclure, Robert Owen purchased the community
of New Harmony, hoping to establish a model
“Community of Equality” where education and
social equality would flourish. Maclure, a wealthy
businessman and well-respected geologist,
attracted many well-known scholars of the early
19th century to New Harmony.
Robert Owen’s social experiment dissolved by
1827. Despite its breakdown, Owen’s utopian
dream brought significant contributions to
American scientific and educational theory, study,
and practice. Owen’s efforts to effect change
and enlightenment came to fruition through the
work of his children in New Harmony and the
young scientists and educators who came with
William Maclure.
Today, New Harmony’s history, architecture,
historic buildings, gardens and nature trails attract
curious visitors as well as residents and institutions
that have similar values and want to work toward
the community’s sustainability.

“Quaint. Quiet. Relaxing,” are all words locals use
to describe Posey County. For New Harmony, we
might add “intriguing.”
While the many societies and schools present
during the town’s heyday have long since
disbanded or closed, the place remains. More
than 30 structures from the Harmonist and
Owenite utopian communities remain as part
of the New Harmony Historic District, which is a
National Historic Landmark.
Walk the same streets and trails used by
students of enlightenment. Pause and reflect
in their carefully tended gardens. Tour this
fascinating town.
New Harmony is a hub for the arts. You’ll see
that in festivals and events that often are gifts to
the community and visitors. There’s something
in every season. It could be the Harmony Spring
Market, First Brush of Spring!, Arts in Harmony
Festival, the autumn Kunstfest, or winter’s
Christmas in New Harmony. Or all of them! And
there’s much more.
New Harmony abounds with groomed walking/
carting/biking paths. From the town, there is a trail
to Harmonie State Park, which has roadways and
trails for all levels of hikers and bicyclists.

This exhibit offers a national story of population shifts and rural

changes, while providing small towns, like New Harmony and
Posey County as a whole, a chance to look at their own paths
and highlight the changes that affected their fortunes over the
past century.

Your tour begins at Richard Meier’s New Harmony Atheneum.
During your tour you will be able to visit several of our historic sites
such as Community House No. 2, one of four large dormitories for
the Harmonists, and the David Lenz House, built circa 1822 and restored
to its original appearance, including authentic Harmonist furniture.
