Module 3: Discussion
Assessments

Prompt #1: Summarize your results and any particular “aha moments” that you may have had
when working through the “interests-based” assessment on the O*NET Interest Profiler website.
How could you use interests-based assessments to help move your career and your life forward? If
you have taken any other interests-based assessments in the past, please comment on those, and
any relevant connections to this assessment.
In the O*NET profiler the highest score I got was in the Artistic section. This makes scenes to me
because creativity has always been an important way to express myself. In any job I have ever had I
try to find a creative facet of it to incorporate. Though, I will say, I express my creativity a bit more
behind the sense. My main outlet when it comes to career path is baking. I am working toward
owning my own bakery/café one day. That brings me to my second score which was Enterprising. I
enjoy coming up with business concepts, or projects at work to increase business. I enjoy leading
people in these endeavors. However, it is not my main goal to manage people. Part of what I like
about “enterprising” is the thinking and problem solving that goes into it. You have to come up with
creative solutions to problems in advance. This is something that is found in the Investigative
interest, which was my third score. It helped to encourage me on my plans to pursue a creative,
enterprising, investigative type career in working to open my own bakery.

Prompt #2: Discuss your primary and secondary career anchors. Any surprises? Make some
connections between your current work / life and your scores on the career anchors assessment.
What was your lowest scoring career anchor? Comment on your perceptions about that (and the
career anchors instrument, in general).

My primary career anchor was Life-Style Integration. This fits with what I learned above. I am
happiest at a job that can integrate my interests into my work. Also, a job that allows for somewhat
of a work life balance. I do tend overwork, so a job that doesn’t seem like so much of work would
probably be ideal for me. Currently I work at a job that, while I do overwork often, I can for the
most part leave work at work. This allows me to maintain a work/life balance.

My second score was Entrepreneurial creativity which matches the scores from the O*NET profile
almost perfectly. I am looking for a space in my work life that I can use my ideas and creativity in
my work. My personal and work goals match with this well.

My lowest score was Managerial Competence, this was interesting because I am in a semi-
managerial position now and do actually see myself in that position over the course of my career. I

think compared to everything else in the profiler I didn’t rank “needing people to follow me high”. I
do find myself in leadership positions often but it is not because I actively want people to follow me.

Prompt #3: With respect to additional self-assessment instruments that you included (at least 3
from either past courses or taken from the Assessment Links list below), write briefly about what
you learned about yourself (cite the new assessments you took, and briefly describe your findings,
and how those findings relate to how you see yourself in the world).

Throughout your personal or professional life, what have been the most useful self-assessments
tools for you, and why?

I have taken the Myers-Brigg/Jung test or variants of it multiple times and usually come out with
either INFP, like I did this time, or INFJ. Both the feeling versus thinking and perceiving versus
judging are very close and tend to flip depending on when I take the test. The thing that stays
consistent is I am introverted. This does not surprise me and makes sense to me as to why I am
usually a “reluctant leader”. I do enjoy being able to guide my team to accomplish their goals and
our company’s goals, but it takes me a little time to warm up to the position when I first start.

I think I may have taken the “big 5” quiz for another class but I am not 100% certain. I was mid-
range for all of them except extraversion I was low and agreeableness I was high. These results
didn’t really surprise me. I am not an extrovert. I tend to be the peacemaker of the group, so I
suppose that goes with agreeableness. An interesting thing I have notice while taking these quizzes
is that I often find myself answering down the middle because in different situations I would
answer differently. For example, usually I try and work out conflict and bring peace. However, if the
situation calls for it I also can just as easily fall into the devil’s advocate role and end up stirring up
conversation and challenging others.

I have never taken the DISC quiz before, but my major result was steadiness at 51%. That makes
sense to me because I am not easily swayed by a situation or emotion. The descriptor of patience,
persistence, and thoughtfulness all describe me well. The smallest section was dominance which
also makes a lot of sense. I do not assert myself on others or in situations often. If I see a situation is
out of hand or needs guidance I will step up but it isn’t my first instinct.

Prompt #4: Post e-portfolio link for review making sure it can be accessed freely or you may not
receive credit for this section. (If you are not comfortable sharing your e-portfolio with your
classmates, please contact me.)
