Chapter 1 Overview

Chapter 1 Overview

1.1 Application

PCS-912 Power Line Carrier Transceiver adopts the transmission line as the channel medium to
transmit blocking protection signals over long distances. This device can be used with high voltage
line protection to form the high frequency blocking protection for the 110kV~500kV system. This
instruction manual provides an overview of the working principle, the application and operation
method for the device.

1.2 Functions and Characteristics

PCS-912 Power Line Carrier Transceiver takes advantage of LFX-912 and similar products at
home and abroad. With the latest product technology and design concept, this type of amplitude
modulation transceiver controls the carrier output in the on/off-keying method. Generally, it does
not transmit in normal condition unless it receives the start transmitting command. Main
characteristics include:

 Small in size and light in weight; with only one layer 19 inches. 4U cabinet.

 Utilizing DSP+FPGA architecture to ensure the real-time data processing. The device has
accurate delay since it uses digitization method. The direct digital synthesis (DDS) technology
is adopted to produce frequency. Carrier frequency signals with high accuracy can be output.
Transmitting frequency can be monitored at any time with the internal high accurate frequency
estimation, so that its accuracy will be guaranteed.

 The integrated design method of the device is to separate space of strong current and weak
current, thus mutual interference between modules can be avoided as much as possible. The
cabinet is totally enclosed with all-metal and provided with earthing terminals. So it has strong
jamproof capability.

 The real panel is bus-type PCB rear panel. The output terminal applies PCB mounting
terminal.

 A 320×240 LCD is used to provide friendly HMI. Users and engineering commissioning
personel can use the keyboard directly to realize the settings of [f_Send] (i.e.: transmitting
frequency) and [V_Alm_3dB]( i.e.: 3dB alarm level ) and [En_Echo] (i.e.: remote start-up logic
enabled), etc. Any parameters inside of the device can be monitored through human-machine
interface. Each function can be checked with state query. In addition, the device is supported
with integrated report mechanism. All of these enable the easy commissioning, convenient
application and reliable performance for the device.

 Specially manufactured inverter switch power supply is adopted. It has the advantages of
small size, high conversion efficiency, wide margin and stable output voltage.

NANJING NARI-RELAYS ELECTRIC CO., LTD. 1

Chapter 1 Overview

 Receiving adopts the method of frequency spectrum up heterodyne demodulation.

 Power amplifier applies a brand new architecture to improve its efficiency and make it easy to
produce and maintain.

 Has complete event recorded report with the capability to record tripping reports for 64 times,
state changes of binary input for 256 times and self-supervision messages for 256 times.
Tripping reports also have super long-time wave recording (18 seconds). So the personnel on
the site can get first-hand information for fault analysis. The reports will be retained in case of
power failure.

 There is a wide working scope of receiving. It works normally within the margin of 4dB~36dB,
i.e. lossless parallel operation.

 Outstanding design concept of stability: if CPU board can not work due to the fault, the
receiving circuit of device will still work normally without being affected. In this way, blocking
signals sent from the offside transceiver will not be lost, so that protection malfunction can be
ultimately prevented.

 The interface card can implement 24Vdc, 110Vdc and 220Vdc input according to practical
requirements.

 Program commissioning and field program upgrading can be performed with the EIA RS-232
standarded commissioning interface and dedicated commission software.

 The device supports local printing and GPS clock synchronization.

 Fine extensible interfaces is supplied. Communication can be implemented through CAN and
RS-485 interfaces as necessary.

Chapter 3 Principle of Device

Chapter 3 Principle of Device

3.1 Basic Working Principle

PCS-912 adopts single frequency carrier direct keying signal modulation. Like the regular blocking
protection transceiver, there is no signal transmitted through the channel in normal condition.
When power system failure occurs, starting or stopping transmit signals will be sent by the
protection device. The receiving frequency of the device is the same as the transmitting frequency.
The device can implement self-transmitting and self-receiving.

PCS-912 mainly consists of 7 modules:

“Power supply board”(NR1301),

“CPU board”(NR1142),

“Receiving/output board”(NR1660),

“Binary input board”(NR1509),

“Power amplifier board”(NR1661),

“Filter board”(NR1662),

“LCD”(NR1851).

The composition schematic diagram is shown in the following figure.

Figure 3.1-1 Block Diagram for Device Working Principle

NANJING NARI-RELAYS ELECTRIC CO., LTD. 7

Chapter 3 Principle of Device

The device does not send high frequency signals to the channel when it is functioning normally. If
there is a system failure, the protection device will send “BI_Start”empty contact. Through the
“Binary input board”, the signal is converted as internal high level to the FPGA on the “CPU board”.
After logical judgement, then the FPGA send “transmit signal” command and transmitting
frequency “FO driver”to the Power amplifier module. The signal “FO”amplified by power amplifier
is sent in 2 directions: one is sent to the high frequency channel after being filtered by the filter; the
other is sent to the “receiving board”to perform self-transmitting and self-receiving. When applying
together with the relay protections of our company, this protection device does not send “stop
transmitting”signal independently. The signal is realized by the return of the “BI_Start”contact.

“Receiving/output board”is the key module for signal demodulation. Signals amplified by power
amplifier will be sent to the “Receiving/output board”directly when transmitting; signals filtered by
filter will be sent to receiving board for demodulation when receiving. The method for receiving
detection is heterodyne up frequency spectrum shift demodulation. It means that the other
frequency components will be filtered by 1MHz narrowband filter after mixing of receiving input FO
and local carrier frequency FL (= 1MHz - FO). In other words, the detection circuit only detects
whether there is a signal at 1MHz frequency point. Signals filtered by 1MHz filter will be amplified
and wave-detected. If the value of the wave-detected signal is higher than the specified threshold
value, the receiving is determined to be successful and the corresponding receiving contact output
will be driven. Meanwhile, the wave-detected signal will be sent to the “CPU board”for sampling
as the basis of 3dB alarm, power estimation and receiving margin LED indicator.

When applying together with the relay protection of our company, the remote start testing logic of
this device will not take effect. If the daily channel exchange signal test is required, it can be
performed via channel test circuit of the protection device. If the protection device used with
transceiver has no remote start test logic, the test logic can be input by short circuiting the
corresponding “BI_Echo”terminal of the Binary input board, and also the test logic can be input by
operating the LCD panel.

“CPU board”mainly performs the real-time detection of the device. It generates transmitting
frequency FO and local carrier frequency FL required to realize high accurate frequency
estimation. It also extends communication interfaces and provides complete event recorded
reports (including tripping reports, self-supervision reports and state changes reports of binary
inputs) based on processing the gathered data and channel wave recording. In addition, it controls
the display of LCD. FPGA on the “CPU board” complete all the logics of the transceiver
independently.

3.2 Logic Block Diagram of Device

The logic block diagram of the device is shown in the following figure. The channel test logic is
designed as “four uniform”high frequency protection transceiver logic. This part of logical relations
is the same as other regular domestic transceiver. When applied together with line protections
which have no function of channel test logic, the signals exchanged between the transceiver and
the protection device also include “NECH”, “TEST”, “STOP2”and “STOP3”.

When applied with the line relay protections of our company, “NECH”(BI_Echo) can not be

8 NANJING NARI-RELAYS ELECTRIC CO., LTD.

Chapter 3 Principle of Device

connected. In this case, if the signal state is “0”, the remote start test logic and the input signals
such as “STOP2”, “STOP3”will be blocked. Only when “NECH”signal is connected in and the
state is “1”, the logic circuit (such as the channel test) can work. The signal can be acquired by the
Binary input board or by setting “En_Echo”. However, when applied with the line relay protections
of our company, notice that the state of “NECH”should not be “1”. Only when applied with other
line protections which have no channel test logic, it can be “1”.

Chapter 4 Supervision

4.1 Overview

When the equipment is in energizing process before the LED “HEALTHY”is on, the equipment
needs to be checked to ensure there are no errors. Therefore, the automatic supervision function,
which checks the health of the protection system when startup and during normal operation, plays
an important role.

In case a fatal fault is detected during automatic supervision, the fault will be displayed on LED
indicators, LCD, and corresponding output contacts will issue alarm to notify the operators to deal
with the problems. At the same time, the fault will be recorded by the programs for the operators to
query later.

4.2 Device Self-supervision

4.2.1 Hardware Supervision

The RAM, ROM, Vref chips on the CPU module are monitored to ensure whether they are
damaged or have some errors. If any one of them is detected damaged or having error, the
equipment will issue alarm signals.

4.2.2 Setting Supervision

The settings are checked to ensure they are reasonable. If the settings are checked to be invalid,
corresponding alarm signal will be issued.

4.2.3 Alarm Handling Recommendations

PCS-912 can store 64 tripping reports. Each tripping report includes corresponding recorded
channel waveforms, state changes of binary inputs, transmitting frequency, receiving frequency,
local carrier frequency and estimated channel power.

When the BI_Recv (Displayed in the BI STATE submenu of the main menu) changes from 0 to1
(triggered on the rising edge), a tripping report will be generated.

When the receiving level is changed from 0 to 1, firstly all the state changes of the binary inputs at
this moment will be recorded in the message as shown on the right of Figure 6.3-5. Meanwhile, it

NANJING NARI-RELAYS ELECTRIC CO., LTD. 35

Chapter 6 HMI Operation

records the transmitting frequency, the receiving frequency and the local carrier frequency values
estimated since this moment, as well as channel waveforms, transmitting state and receiving state
100ms before (sampling at an interval of 0.6ms) and also 18s after this moment.

In Figure 6.3-6, (90ms, -16.4dBv, 0, 0) indicates that the relative time from wave recording to the
vertical line is 90ms, the channel power level at the vertical line is -16.3dBv, the transmitting state
is 0 and the receiving state is 0.

Because the wave recording time is too long, the waveforms will be displayed on many screens,
which make it very difficult to view in a normal way. The users are more concerned about the
moments when there are state changes of the transmitting and receiving. Therefore, the software
supports using the “+”and “-”keys while viewing waveforms to realize the switching the time
points of the state changes of the transmitting and receiving.

Of course, you can use the “”and “”keys for fine adjustment of the screen to the left or right,
and you can also use the “”and “”keys for switching amongst different waveform page.

6.3.4.2 ALM REPORT

In the “REPORT”menu, use the “”or the “”key to move the cursor to “ALM REPORT”menu,
and press the “ENT”key to access the menu and view the information as shown in the following
figure.

Chapter 7 Settings and Parameters

Chapter 7 Settings and Parameters

7.1 Overview

Settings and parameters of the device are the basis of its normal operation. Despite of no
damages to the device, errors will appear if incorrect settings are chosen for use. Prior to putting
the device into operation, it’
s necessary to set the settings and parameters of the device according
to practical requirements. Settings and parameters of the device involve 2 parts: equipment
parameters and settings. Settings and parameters can be set and modified by HMI or by dedicated
commissioning software.

7.2 Equipment Parameters

7.2.1 Parameter List

Table 7.2-1 Equipment parameters

7.3.1 Setting List

Table 7.3-1 Settings

No. Setting Name Min. Value Max. Value Step Default Unit
1 f_Send 40 500 1 186 kHz
2 V_Alm_3dB 0.00 31.00 0.01 10.00 dBv
3 V_Fall_3dB 3 6 1 3 dBv
4 dB_Attenuate 0 14 1 14 dB
5 En_Echo 0 1 1 0
6 En_AutoChExchange 0 1 1 0

7.3.2 Setting Description

1) f_Send

It is used to set the operating frequency at which the device transmits signals. If the
transmission frequency setting [f_Send] is set as 200kHz, a sine wave of 200kHz will be
generated from the channel port when the device transmits. When setting this value, attention
must be paid that the value shall be identical to the center frequency of the Filter module;
otherwise, you will find no output signal at the channel port when the device transmits signals.

2) V_Alm_3dB

It is used to set the 3dB alarm level of this device. This setting [V_Alm_3dB] and the setting
[V_Fall_3dB] decide together how to generate a 3dB alarm. Set the setting [V_Alm_3dB] as
“X”, and set the setting [V_Fall_3dB] as “Y”; the channel receiving level is “Z”at the same
time. Alm_3dB will be issued when the equation “Z < X –Y”is met. The setting [V_Fall_3dB]
can be set as 3, 4, 5 or 6, and it provides several optional alarms to the users. The setting
[V_Alm_3dB] can be set according to a channel test. During a channel test, observe the

48 NANJING NARI-RELAYS ELECTRIC CO., LTD.

Chapter 7 Settings and Parameters

signal level value from the contralateral transceiver on the receiving transceiver. This is the
value for the setting [V_Alm_3dB].

3) V_Fall_3dB

It is used to set the 3dB fall level of this device. See the introduction above about the setting
[V_Alm_3dB].

4) dB_Attenuate

It is used to set the dB_Attenuate of this device. If signal transmission between 2

transceivers suffers a small attenuation (i.e.: high receiving margin), certain loss can be input
by adjusting the jumpers J1, J2, J3, J4 and J5 on the Receiving/output board NR1660.

J1, J2, J3, J4 and J5, and their corresponding attenuation value are shown as below.

Table 7.3-2 Jumpers and attenuation

Jumper Attenuation Value (dB)

J1 3
J2 6
J3 10
J4 14
J5 0

Notice that the input of the channel attenuation decides the receiving starting level.
Correlation between them can be seen in the following table. The higher the attenuation value
is, the higher the starting level will be.

Table 7.3-3 Attenuation and starting level

Attenuation Value (dB) Starting Level (dBv)

0 -5
3 -2
6 1
10 5
14 9

When there is input of channel attenuation, the receiving starting level will enhance
correspondingly, and the receiving margin will reduce with the same amplitude of receiving
level on the channel. You can see obvious differences from the changes of the receiving
margin LED indicators in the following table.

NANJING NARI-RELAYS ELECTRIC CO., LTD. 49

Chapter 7 Settings and Parameters

Table 7.3-4 Receiving margin LED indicators at different channel attenuation

Starting Level (dBv) -5 -2 5
+6dB
+9dB
+12dB
Receiving Margin Light
+15dB
+18dB
+21dB

When the commissioning personnel completes setting jumpers for channel attenuation on the
Receiving/output board, it must be ensured the setting [dB_Attenuate] must be equal to the
values associated with jumpers. If the commissioning personnel fail to make sure of the
consistency between the jumpers and setting, the transceiver can not work normally.

5) En_Echo

It is used to enable or disable the remote start logic of this device. When this setting is set as
“1”, the remote start logic will be put into service in the transceiver. Now the transceiver itself
can complete the whole channel test, without cooperation with external protection. When this
setting is set as “0”, the remote start logic in the transceiver will be disabled. When it is used in
conjunction with the relay protection of our company, this setting has to be set to “0”, because
the protection will fulfill the channel test instead of the transceiver.

6) En_AutoChExchange

It is used to enable or disable the exchange channel test function at appointed moment. When
the settings [En_Echo] and [En_AutoChExchange] in the “CONFIG SETTINGS”menu are
both set as “1”, the PCS-912 will automatically perform the channel test at the 2 moments
represented by the [t_ChExchange_1] and [t_ChExchange_2] in the “EQUIP SETTINGS”
menu without manual intervention.

equipment. The PCS-912 boards, bus backplanes are sensitive to electrostatic discharge
when not in the unit's housing.

The basic precautions to guard against electrostatic discharge are as follows:

NANJING NARI-RELAYS ELECTRIC CO., LTD. 51

Chapter 8 Installation

 Should boards have to be removed from the device installed in a grounded cubicle in an HV
switchgear installation, discharge you by touching station ground (the cubicle) beforehand.

 Only hold electronic boards at the edges, taking care not to touch the components.

 Only works on boards that have been removed from the cubicle on a workbench designed for
electronic equipment and wear a grounded wristband. Do not wear a grounded wristband,
however, while inserting or withdrawing units.

 Always store and ship the electronic boards in their original packing. Place electronic parts in
electrostatic screened packing materials.

8.3 Checking the Shipment

Check that the consignment is complete immediately upon rece ipt. Notify the nearest
NARI-RELAYS Company or agent, should departures from the delivery note, the shipping papers
or the order be found.

Visually inspect all the material when unpacking it. When there is evidence of transport damage,
lodge a claim immediately in writing with the last carrier and notify the nearest NARI-RELAYS
Company or agent.

If the equipment is not going to be installed immediately, store all the parts in their original packing
in a clean dry place at a moderate temperature. The humidity should not exceed 90% at a
maximum temperature of +60°C; the permissible storage temperature range in dry air is -40°C to
+70°C.

8.4 Material and Tools Required

The necessary mounting kits will be provided, including screws, pincers and assembly
instructions.

A suitable drill and spanners are required to secure the cubicles to the floor using the plugs
provided (if PCS-912 is mounted in cubicles).

8.5 Device Location and Ambient Conditions

The place of installation should permit easy access especially to front of the device, i.e. to the
human-machine interface of the equipment.

There should also be free access at the rear of the equipment for additions and replacement of
electronic boards.

Since every piece of technical equipment can be damaged or destroyed by ina dmissible ambient
conditions, such as:

1) The location should not be exposed to excessive air pollution (dust, aggressive substances).

52 NANJING NARI-RELAYS ELECTRIC CO., LTD.

Chapter 8 Installation

2) Severe vibration, extreme changes of temperature, high levels of humidity, surge voltages of
high amplitude and short rise time and strong induced magnetic fields should be avoided as
far as possible.

3) Air must not be allowed to circulate freely around the equipment.

The equipment can in principle be mounted in any attitude, but it is normally mounted vertically
(visibility of markings).

WARNING: Excessively high temperature can appreciably reduce the operating life of

for heat emission of the PCS-912.

As mentioned former (Chapter 5 Hardware Description), the boards are installed in the PCS-912,
and these boards must be plugged into the proper slots of the PCS-912 respectively. The safety
instructions must be abided by when installing the boards, see Section 9.2 Safety Instructions. The
following figure shows the installation way that a board is being plugged into a corresponding slot.

Figure 8.6-2 Demonstration of plugging a board into its corresponding slot

NOTE: This figure is only used to show how to plug a board into the corresponding slot.

The number of the boards is not as shown in the above figure, please refer to the actual
device for the number of the boards.

In the case of equipment supplied in cubicles, place the cubicles on the foundations that have
been prepared. Take care while doing so not to jam or otherwise damage any of the cables that
have already been installed. Secure the cubicles to the foundations.

8.7 Electrical Installation and Wiring

8.7.1 Grounding Guidelines

Switching operations in HV installations generate transient over voltages on control signal cables.
There is also a background of electromagnetic RF fields in electrical installations that can induce
spurious currents in the devices themselves or the leads connected to them.

All these influences can influence the operation of electronic apparatus.

On the other hand, electronic apparatus can transmit interference that can disrupt the operation of
other apparatus.

In order to minimize these influences as far as possible, certain standards have to be observed
with respect to grounding, wiring and screening.

54 NANJING NARI-RELAYS ELECTRIC CO., LTD.

Chapter 8 Installation

NOTE: All these precautions can only be effective if the station ground is of good quality.

8.7.2 Cubicle Grounding

The cubicle must be designed and fitted out such that the impedance for RF interference of the
ground path from the electronic device to the cubicle ground terminal is as low as possible.

Metal accessories such as side plates, blanking plates etc., must be effectively connected
surface-to-surface to the grounded frame to ensure a low-impedance path to ground for RF
interference. The contact surfaces must not only conduct well, they must also be non -corroding.

NOTE: If the above conditions are not fulfilled, there is a possibility of the cubicle or parts

of it forming a resonant circuit at certain frequencies that would amplify the transmission of
interference by the devices installed and also reduce their immunity to induced
interference.

Movable parts of the cubicle such as doors (front and back) or hinged equipment frames must be
effectively grounded to the frame by three braided copper strips (see Figure 8.7-1).

The metal parts of the cubicle housing and the ground rail are interconnected electrically
conducting and corrosion proof. The contact surfaces shall be as large as possible.

NOTE: For metallic connections please observe the voltage difference of both materials

according to the electrochemical code.

The cubicle ground rail must be effectively connected to the station ground rail by a grounding strip
(braided copper).

NANJING NARI-RELAYS ELECTRIC CO., LTD. 55

Chapter 8 Installation

Figure 8.7-1 Cubicle grounding system

8.7.3 Ground Connection on the Device

There is a ground terminal on the rear of the NR1662 module, and the ground braided copper strip
can be connected with it. Take care that the grounding strip is always as short as possible. The
main thing is that the device is only grounded at one point. Grounding loops from unit to unit are
not allowed.

There are some ground terminals on some connectors of the PCS-912, and the sign is “GND”. All
the ground terminals are connected in the cabinet of this device. So, the ground terminal on the
rear of the NR1662 module (see the following figure) is the only ground terminal of this device.

Figure 8.7-2 Ground terminal of the PCS-912

56 NANJING NARI-RELAYS ELECTRIC CO., LTD.

Chapter 8 Installation

8.7.4 Grounding Strips and their Installation

High frequency currents are produced by interference in the ground connections and because of
skin effect at these frequencies, only the surface region of the grounding strips is of consequence.

The grounding strips must therefore be of (preferably tinned) braided copper and not round copper
conductors, as the cross-section of round copper would have to be too large.

Data of braided copper strip: threaded M4, 2.5 mm 2.

Proper terminations must be fitted to both ends (press/pinch fit and tinned) with a hole for bolting
them firmly to the items to be connected.

The surfaces to which the grounding strips are bolted must be electrically conducting and
non-corroding.

The following figure shows the ground strip and termination.

Figure 8.7-3 Ground strip and termination

8.7.5 Guidelines for Wiring

There are several types of cables that are used in the connection of RCS-9621C: braided copper
cable, serial communication cable.

Recommendation of each cable:

 Grounding: braided copper cable, threaded M4, 4.0mm2

 Serial communication: 4-core shielded braided cable

 DC Power supply, Binary Output: brained copper cable, 1.5mm 2

8.7.6 Wiring for Electrical Cables

A female connector is used for connecting the wires with it, and then a female connector plugs into
a corresponding male connector that is in the front of one board. For further details about the pin
defines of these connectors, see Chapter 5 Hardware Description.

The following figure shows the glancing demo about the wiring for the electrical cables.

Chapter 9 Commissioning

Chapter 9 Commissioning

9.1 Overview

The device employs a high degree of self-checking and can issue alarms in case of fault or
abnormality. As a result of this, in the commissioning test, it is only necessary to verify that the
hardware is functioning correctly and the application-specific software settings have been applied
to the relay.

NOTE: Before carrying out any work on the equipment, the user should be familiar with

the contents of the safety and technical data sections and the ratings on the equipment’
s
rating label.

9.2 Safety Instructions

WARNING: Hazardous voltages are present in this electrical equipment during operation.

Non-observance of the safety rules can result in severe personal injury or property
damage.

WARNING: Only qualified personnel shall work on and around this equipment after

becoming thoroughly familiar with all warnings and safety notices of this manual as well
as with the applicable safety regulations.

Particular attention must be drawn to the following:

 The earthing screw of the device must be connected solidly to the protective earth conductor
before any other electrical connection is made.

9.5.1.3 Check the Jumpers

In general, the jumpers of this device have been set correctly according to the practical application.
While, checking the jumpers is a good habit before this device is brought to service.

9.5.1.4 External Wiring

Check that the external wiring is correct to the relevant application scheme diagram.

Check the wiring against the schematic diagram for the installation to ensure compliance with the
customer’s normal practice.

9.5.1.5 Auxiliary Supply

This device can be operated from either 110/125Vdc or 220/250Vdc auxiliary supply depending on
the nominal supply rating. The incoming voltage must be within the operating range specified in
the following table, before energizing this device, measure the auxiliary supply to ensure it within
the operating range.

9.5.2 With this Device Energized

The following groups of checks verify that this device hardware and software is functioning
correctly and should be carried out with the auxiliary supply applied to this device.

9.5.2.1 Front Panel LCD Display

The liquid crystal display (LCD) is designed to operate in a wide range of substation ambient
temperatures. For this purpose, this device has an automatic “LCD contrast”adjusting feature,
which is capable to adjust LCD contrast automatically according to the ambient temperature.

Connect the device to DC power supply correctly and turn this device on. Check program version
and forming time displayed in command menu to ensure that are corresponding to what ordered.

9.5.2.2 Date and Time

If the time and date is not being maintained by substation automation system, the date and time
should be set manually.

In the event of the auxiliary supply failing, with a battery fitted on CPU board, the time and date will
be maintained. Therefore when the auxiliary supply is restored the time and date will be correct
and not need to set again.

Set the date and time to the correct local time and date using menu item ”CLOCK”.

To test this, remove the auxiliary supply from this device for approximately 30s. After being
re-energized, the time and date should be correct.

9.5.2.3 Testing the HEALTHY LED indicator

Apply the rated DC Power supply and check that the “HEALTHY”LED is lighting in green. We
need to emphasize that the “HEALTHY”LED is always lighting in the operation except that serious
errors occurs in the device.

9.5.2.4 Testing the ALARM LED indicator

Produce one of the abnormal conditions, the “ALARM”LED will light in red. When all the abnormal
condition disappears, the “ALARM”LED will extinguish.

9.5.2.5 Testing Other LED indicators

It is recommended to test each of the other LED indicators in corresponding function test.

9.5.2.6 Testing the Binary Inputs

This test checks that all the binary inputs of this device are functioning correctly.

The binary inputs should be energized one at a time, see external connection diagrams for
terminal numbers.

Ensure that the voltage applied on the binary input must be within the operating range.

The status of each binary input can be viewed using menu item “BI STATE”. Sign “1”denotes an
energized input and sign “0”denotes a de-energized input.

9.5.3 Transmitting Level Detection

Firstly, use a dedicated connection plug to short-circuit the terminals “OUT”and “LOAD”on the
filter plug-in (NR1662). Use the frequency selective level meter with the high resistance tap
selected to connect between the terminal “INT TEST”and the device earth (a screw on the panel
is OK), as shown in the figure below. The device is put in the transmitting state now. Then check
the output level reading on the frequency selective level meter, which is expected to be
+(11±1)dBv at this time. Because the level value at the terminal “INT TEST” suffered an
attenuation of 20dB inside, the actual transmitting level would be 11dBv+20dBv=31dBv.

The device has to work at the 75Ω load, when the voltage level of 31dBv can be converted to a
power level of 40dBm.

The following figure shows a schematic diagram of transmitting level detection.

9.5.4 Starting Level Margin Light Test

Use a dedicated connection plug to short-circuit the terminals “OUT”and “EXT OUT”on the filter
plug-in (NR1662), and connect the voltage level oscillator and the frequency selective level meter
as shown in the following figure. Adjust the output frequency of the level oscillator same as that of
the device; then change slowly the output of the level oscillator from small to big. When the binary
input [BI_Recv] of the device is changed from “0”to “1”, the reading of the frequency selective
level meter is the starting level. Margin LED indicators can be tested in the same way.

The following figure shows a schematic diagram of starting level margin light test.

9.5.5 Channel Test and 3dB Alarm Setting

After regular checking of transmitting and receiving circuit is completed, connect the device to the
high frequency channel and use the short circuit plug on the filter to short-circuit the terminals
“EXT OUT”and “OUT”. Contact the offside substation/power plant and turn on the power for the
offside transceiver. Put in remote start channel test logic on both sides (set the setting [En_Echo]
as “1” and [dB_Attenuate] as “0”). Then perform the exchange signal test (using the
“Cmd_ChTest”of the “CTRL CMD”submenu in the main menu).

During the testing period that local transmitting is stopped and only receives the contralateral high
frequency (the first 5s), firstly observe the receiving margin light of the device. If all the six
receiving margin LED indicators are lit on (the receiving margin is over +21dB), attenuation loss
can be input manually in the receiving circuit. There are 4 taps of attenuation: 3, 6, 10 and 14dB,
please refer to 7.3.2 for the details to input them. Choose to input 1 tap of attenuation and perform
another channel test. If all the margin LED indicators are still lit on, continue to increase the
attenuation loss in the receiving circuit.

The best situation is that 1 or more LED indicators of above “+12dB”are lit on (i.e. the receiving
margin ≥ 12dB). If the receiving margin is below 9dB (i.e.: the “+9dB”light is steady off), it means
line attenuation is relatively high. The high frequency channel need to be checked till appropriate
operation conditions are met.

After inputting attenuation in the receiving circuit, set the setting [dB_Attenuate] to the value input
in the receiving circuit. Now perform the channel test again, during the testing period that receives
the contralateral high frequency (the first 5s), observe the channel power level displayed on the

NANJING NARI-RELAYS ELECTRIC CO., LTD. 65

Chapter 9 Commissioning

LCD main menu, this value is the setting [V_Alm_3dB] to be set as (if observed channel power
level is 28.65dBv, then [V_Alm_3dB] should be set as 28.65dBv).

The setting [V_Fall_3dB] is often set as “3”; but it can be set as “6”if required by the customers.

After finishing all the settings, write the settings on an adhesive label and paste the label on the
back plate of the device, for the use of future scheduled check and validation of the device.

After finishing all the testing work for the device, firstly use the “Cmd_RstTarg”of the “CTRL
CMD”submenu in the main menu to reset the signals and LED indicators with retention; and then
use “Cmd_ClearReport”of the “CTRL CMD”submenu to delete tripping reports, self-supervision
reports and binary input state change reports in this device. Now the device can be put into
service.

When the device LCD stays on the main menu and after the operators have performed a daily
channel exchange test, the device will switch automatically to the channel exchange test interface
and display results of the channel exchange test clearly.

The device LCD will switch back to the main menu after holding the channel exchange test
interface for a certain period. This function is provided for the convenience of the operators to
judge whether the channel test is successful by the channel exchange test interface without any
menu operations.

9.5.6 Final Checks

Ensure the device restarts to work, all the abnormal occurrences possible to disable the device
have been eliminated and all the signal LED indicators are reset. Check the positions of jumpers
on the device carefully, and ensure the operating parameters of the device to satisfy the operation
requirements. If possible, please clear all the historical reports by the “CTRL CMD”submenu in
the main menu, input correct password to access the “CTRL CMD”submenu, and then execute
“Cmd_ClearReport”.

After the device is put into operation, only the “HEALTHY”and “FREQ”LED indicators on the
panel would be lit on under normal condition. Users can view the device operating parameters
(e.g.: Binary inputs/outputs, frequency estimation and channel sampling) by operating on the
keyboard. It facilitates site personnel a lot in commissioning and maintenance.

In order to minimize interference and provide a sound work environment, mobile phones,
interphone and other radio transceivers should be kept away from the installation site.

After the above tests are completed, remove all test or temporary shorting leads, etc. If it has been
necessary to disconnect any of the external wiring from the device in order to perform the wiring
verification tests, it should be ensured that all connections are replaced in accordance with the
relevant external connection or scheme diagram.
