CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM

Background of the Study

Plastic pollution is an issue that different countries have been facing. Plastics have been

an all-time problem in the world. Plastics have caused so many environmental issues such as

flooding caused by clogged drainages and deaths of marine creatures caused by entanglement or

intake of plastics.

At the present time, some countries had ban plastics in their respective countries. In the

Philippines, different cities like San Carlos, Negros Occidental; City of San Fernando, Pampanga

and Zamboanga City, currently implement plastic ban in their respective cities. In Zamboanga

City, EO BC453-2019 signed by Honorable Mayor Beng Climaco last February 13, 2019

ordered the ban on the use of non-biodegradable plastic sando bags as bagging materials in all

establishments in the city during weekends – Saturdays and Sundays. Recycling and reusing

have been practiced through years as well. But even with the different efforts of different sectors

in the society, all these are not enough to fully resolve the problem with plastic pollutions.

With this, the researchers have planned on presenting “Plastic Shredder” that can be used

in different households. Although different designs and machines are already created for the

same product, the researchers would like to innovate the idea. This study would like the plastic

shredder to be home-based which can be used by individuals in everyday life. We cannot deny

the fact that each one of us have contributed to this plastic pollution by merely purchasing

shampoos in sachets; using plastic sando bags when doing grocery; and many other more. With

that, this study aims on addressing the plastic pollution at the primary level – households.
Statement of the Problem
This study aims to show the importance of home-based manual plastic shredder in

helping to reduce scattered plastic waste in the surroundings. This study focuses more on the

goal of presenting innovative ideas about plastic shredder with primary intention of providing

such to communities with high volume of plastic waste. This study also intends to give more

awareness on how each person can contribute to lessen the burden we all face – plastic pollution.

Each household now has more alternatives in being able to help in such small ways and being

that responsible individuals who care about the next generations. With this, the study

specifically, seeks to answer the following:

1. What is the importance of developing manual plastic shredder in minimizing plastic

pollution?

2. Why is there a need of producing a manual plastic shredder despite of having the

existing plastic shredder machine?

3. How does the manual plastic shredder become useful and convenient in reducing

plastic waste?

Scope and Limitation of the Study

The scope of this project covers the conceptual design of the Plastic Shredder. The plastic

shredder shall be applicable to any type of plastic. The shredder is subject to a limitation on the

volume of the plastic it can shred based on the dimension of the shredder. Therefore, the bigger

pieces of plastic shall be cut into smaller pieces and harder plastics shall be shredded longer or

shredded again. The prototype of the shredding machine will not be developed. This is due to the

current situation we are experiencing now which is the Pandemic. This proposal was made

during the academic year 2020-2021.

Definition of Terms
For a better understanding of the study, the following terms defined in the context of the

research.

Awareness – It is a condition of knowing and being educated regarding something.

Innovation – It is a thought that has been changed into reasonable reality.

Non- Biodegradable – It refers to an object or materials that which don't effortlessly break

down by regular elements.

Pandemic – This refers to an outbreak of irresistible sickness that happens over a wide region

and that is of high pervasiveness, for the most part influencing a critical extent of the country.

Plastics – It is a material that can be molded and can be shred.

Plastic shredder – It is a machine that recycle and cut plastics into small pieces.

Pollution – It refers to plastics waste that impacts to human health and environment.

Recycling – It is a process of renovating waste materials into innovative materials and items.

Reduce – This refers to diminish something to a specific state is to make that thing be in that

state.

Reusing – This refers to the point at which an item is utilized again in a similar structure and for

a similar reason.
