Introduction

Study has shown that crime is a major problem in the country of Jamaica as it is one of the biggest
challenges that the citizens of this country are forced to endure because of the lack of law enforcers in
Jamaica. The government is unable to provide the basic resources to the citizens because there are not
enough resources for every citizen in Jamaica. Citizens are unemployed because they did not go to school
because they cannot afford resources for school this then forces them to a life of crime. The district of
kelliths in the parish of clarndon is the parish that the researcher will be conducting the research. Over the
last five years crime has been one of the biggest challenges for this community. The research is to
investigate the negative impact that crime has on this community.
Statement of problem
 The researcher aims to investigate the negative impacts that crime has on the community of
kelliths.

Aims and objectives

 To determine the causes and effects that crime has on the citizens in community of kelliths.

 To determine the possible solutions of crime in society in comparison to the community of

kelliths
Literature review
Crime is defined as an action or omission which constitutes an offence and is punishable by law. According
to the newspaper article Donna p hope on January 09, 2020 stated that the main factors according crime in
Jamaica cuts across the political, social, economic, ideological, cultural and administrative. These elements
are all inter-relational as the general framework of the society at this time supports a crime on a broad
continuum. Crime has a negative impact on Jamaica's students because they grow in a poor community they
adapt to a life of crime. The main cause of crime is poverty because they cannot they cannot provide the
basic needs for them and their family.

The second written article was a book written by Nasser Mustapha named sociology for Caribbean students
in this book they highlighted the characteristic of crime. Many sociologist believe that crime is beneficial to
society because without crime there will be no need the law or law enforcers such as the police and soldiers
so there will be more employed people in society as it relates to the laws some crime would be necessary to
the set boundaries in society. Crime is necessary in our society to create employment and laws. Emile
Durkheim a sociologist claims that a limited amount of crime is necessary and beneficial to society, so much
so that society could not exist without some form of deviance. He did not simply look for what was ‘wrong’
with the criminals and deviants. Crime, in his view, was not the result of a sick individual, nor was it
‘unnatural,’ but rather it is an integral part of society and performed a crucial function. Too much crime,
however, is bad for society, and may help bring about its collapse. Thus, in any society, the amount of crime
that exists determines whether crime is good or bad for society. This contrasts with the typical view that
crime is harmful to society.

The next article was a newspaper article written by Oran Moore explaining that crime has cost the country of
Jamaica millions of dollars and the loss of thousands of innocent lives citizen are shot on the streets and
robbed criminals also go to citizen's home to rob them and take anything valuable. Gangs are the main
culprits behind crime do illegal activities such as robbing, extortion and scamming. The police and soldiers
sometime catches them in this activities and end up in a shout out with the gangs innocent people are
sometimes injured or killed during this time and when two gangs are at war. They extort local business and
taxi drivers are afraid of them so they give them money to leave them alone. Scamming is one of Jamaica's
major crime as Jamaicans calls persons from other foreign countries calming that they have won millions but
they have to pay them to get the money.

The fourth was a journal written by abigal c o' hara stating that named a study of crime according to this
journal crime is any illegal activity that is punishable by law. Crime is one of the biggest challenges that all
Caribbean countries face as a major problem. Through this the Caribbean countries have created strategies in
place to deal with this problem. Crime affect the citizens of these Caribbean in a negative way these effects
are psychological such as anger, depression or fear which in some cases can cause sleeplessness flashback to
the offence or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the guilt at having become the victim of crime and
feelings one could have prevented it (whether or not this was at all possible). The effects of a crime can be
felt not only by the individual who the criminal justice system treats as the direct victim, but also by their
family and those close to them. Crime against business is also not an effect-free area as both managers and
staff are likely to be affected.
Research Design

The researcher conducted an investigation on the impacts of crime on the citizens of kelliths, and the causes

and effect. Questionnaires fall under quantitative methods of sociological research. As defined by earl R.

babbie, quantitative methods emphasize objective measurements and the statistical, mathematical or numeral

analysis collected through polls, questionnaire and surveys. The quantitative method of research was selected

by the researchers as it is less biased, affordable and less time consuming in addition to being appropriate to

the study being conducted as it allows for multivariate analysis and informs the reader of the main causes of

the social phenomenon being investigated.

St John and seven ground district were visited, both comprised of approximately 30 households.

Approximately 10 of the houses had extended families; meaning more than one questionnaire could be

distributed to each house. At least 25% of both districts were required to complete the investigation.

20 questionnaires were distributed to 30 household. Citizens often refused to answer the surveys and wanted

to know the basis of the investigation. Also survey repossession was problematic as persons refused to

respond unless given additional time. Questionnaires were left overnight with citizens and the researcher had

to wait for days before recollecting.

Sociological perspective

Emile Durkheim the functionalist believed that society could not develop or survive without some crime or
deviant act this basically means that there would not be any laws and law enforcers which means there would
be more unemployed citizens. He did not simply look for what was ‘wrong’ with the criminals and deviants.
Crime, in his view, was not the result of a sick individual, nor was it ‘unnatural,’ but rather it is an integral
part of society and performed a crucial function. Too much crime, however, is bad for society, and may help
bring about its collapse. Thus, in any society, the amount of crime that exists determines whether crime is
good or bad for society. This contrasts with the typical view that crime is harmful to society.

Sample section

A Questionnaire is a number of pre-set standard questions that can contain open-ended questions as well as

close-ended questions, which is designed to gather statistical information. The questionnaire was the main

method of collecting the data is because they are easily administered along with allowing for a large number

of people to be reached. The questionnaire also allows for time to be saved as a large sampling group has to

be reached. The main reason for the use of a questionnaire was mainly because the data collected can easily

be tabulated, measured and analysed.

The research sample consisted of (10) family household in st Johns district. Seven ground district did
(20) questionnaires from each street they were randomly selected the age group from 18-60 years. The
method was chosen on the basis that the respondents had to answer questions on the questionnaire,
allowing them to be relevant to the topic being investigated.
Data collection instrument
The data collection method used in this research project was a questionnaire the researcher chose this

method of data collection as it less time consuming. It ensures privacy for respondents, and it is an

effective means of gathering statistical information. A questionnaire is a number of pre-set standard

questions that can contain open-ended questions, which is design to gather statistical information. The

main reason for the use of a questionnaire was mainly because the data collected can easily be distributed,

measured and analysed.

Questionnaire
The researcher is a fifth form student at the MC Grath High School pursuing a course in social studies. I am
currently conducting a study among high school students on the impact of gambling on students’ academic
performance at MC Grath High School. I am seeking your assistance in completing this questionnaire. This
will be done for my social studies school based assessment.
Read each question carefully and select the most suitable response by placing a tick in the bracket space
provided.
