ESTIMATING EARTH WORK IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION

Example: Reduced level (R.L) of ground along the centre line of a proposed road from chainage
10 to chainage 20 is given below. The formation level at the 10th chainage is 107 and the road us
in downward gradient of 1 in 150 up to the chainage 14 and then the gradient changes to 1 in 100
downward. Formation width of road is 10 meter and side slopes of banking are 2:1 (Horizontal:
Vertical). Length of the chain is 30 meter. Draw longitudinal section of the road and a typical
cross-section. Find also the area of the side slopes for stone pitching.

Figure on next page.

The area of the side slopes which may require stone pitching may be calculated by multiplying
the mean sloping breadth by the length.

Mean sloping breadth = (𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠2 + 𝑑𝑑2 ) = d(s2 − 1)

d or dm 1
Area of slope = L x d(s2 − 1)
S
Where, L is the length of bank or slope along the road.

data:
Example: Estimate the quantity of earthwork for a portion of a road from the L-Section provided
above in Fig 7-12 taking case III (partly in banking and partly in cutting) as formation. Length of
Chain is 50 meter. The formation width of the road is 8 meter and side slopes in banking 1.5:1
and in cutting 1:1.
