1 Product Overview

This document describes the Digital Unit (DU) for RBS 6000 systems used
for the GSM standard.

1.1 Purpose
The DU provides switching, traffic management, timing, and radio interfacing.

1.2 Variants
The DU variants are the following:

• DUG 10 01

• DUG 20 01

DUG 10 01 and DUG 20 01 support Evolved EDGE level A.

Function Description

2 Function Description

The DU has the following functions:

• Timing function

• Loadable software (from Flash Card)

• Radio interface

• Transmission handling

• External synchronization

• Tower Mounted Amplifier Control Module (TMA-CM) (only for DUG 10 01)

• Controlling power and climate of the RBS

More information can be found in RBS Configurations.

For the block diagrams of the DUs, see Figure 2 (DUG 10 01) and Figure

2.1 Maintenance Button

The maintenance button is used to activate one of four different modes or
to do a hardware reset. Table 1 lists the available functions activated by the
maintenance button.

Table 1 Available Functions for Maintenance Button

Function Description

Mode remote change of maintenance state when a
technician is present on-site.
Full Maintenance Mode During Full Maintenance mode the unit
suppresses all traffic and all alarms to be able to
perform maintenance on the unit.
HW Reset The unit is restarted when HW Reset is activated.
No Maintenance Mode During No Maintenance mode, the unit is available
for traffic and no alarms are suppressed.
Alarm Suppressed During Alarm Suppressed mode, alarms will still
Mode be raised and put in the alarm list on the node, but
no new alarms or event notification will be issued
to Remote Manager Application (RMA). The
alarms already issued before Alarm Suppressed
mode are still active.

Figure 4 shows how to use the maintenance button to activate the different
functions, and what flashing pattern corresponds to what function. While
pressing the maintenance button the unit enters temporary states before
activating a mode, this is represented with dotted lines. When the button is
released the mode will be activated, this is represented with solid lines. The

DU Interfaces

4 DU Interfaces

The signalling and power interfaces for the DU are listed in Table 3.The DUG
10 01 and DUG 20 01 have different radio interfaces. This is because the
DUG 10 01 uses the architecture from RBS 2000, with the baseband circuitry
on the Radio Unit (RU) (the RUG 11). Instead of a separate unit for TMA-CM
(as in RBS 2000), this functionality is included in the DUG 10 01, and could
also be used for antenna supervision. Only electrical connection between the
DU and RU is supported. The DUG 20 01 uses the same architecture as the
other radio standards in RBS 6000 (WCDMA and LTE), with the baseband
circuitry on the DU connected over the standardized CPRI (2.5 Gbps) interface
to a Radio Unit multi-Standard (RUS). The RU does in this case include the
TMA-CM functionality and the CPRI interface supports both electrical and
optical connection (the latter for main-remote configurations).

For more information on which Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) module to

use, see Spare Parts Catalog.
