Chapter 1

1. Semantics is branch of linguistic study focuses on the meaning of communicated through

language especially the meaning of words and sentences.
2. In semantic knowledge, Entailment is a term shows to mean a relationship between
sentences.
3. Signification is a process of creating and interpreting symbols.
4. Definition theory is a semantics term used in analyzing a speaker’s semantic knowledge
to get some idea.
5. There are three challenges in doing semantics such as circularity, the way how we
encounter to ensure our definition the exact meaning of words, and determining what
actually the special speech mean in context is.
6. There are four important assumptions in semantics such as: 1) reference and sense, 2)
utterances, sentences and propositions, 3) literal and non-literal meaning, 4) semantics
and pragmatics meaning.
7. Reference and sense come from two terms reference and sense. Reference means the
relationship by which language hooks onto the world, while sense is the link between
elements within the vocabulary system.
8. Utterance is the real pieces of speech, sentences a process of filtering out certain types of
information we can get to abstract grammatical elements, while proposition is the process
to establish rules of valid deduction, and logicians discovered that certain elements of
grammatical information in sentences were irrelevant.
