Assessments: I will check to see if my students understand what historical

Summative Throughout the lesson, I will also check-in with my students to
see if they have any questions.
I will assess my students’ research abilities by looking at their
Plot Planner A and B worksheets in Google Classroom.
Anticipatory Set: To hook my students, I will have them watch a video about
Activate Prior Knowledge historical fiction. My students enjoy watching videos and
Hook truly enjoy talking about history. Within the video,
students will be exposed to the definition of historical
fiction and see different books and movies that they have
read or seen. Students have been exposed to historical
fiction before, but in this lesson, we will be applying the
format of historical fiction and relating it to our writing
prompt.

Grouping Strategies: Students will be grouped in whole group.

Direct Instruction: I will be doing most of the talking in this lesson because it
I do introduces our writing project. I will show students the list of
Explorers they can choose from. We have already studied these
Explorers in previous weeks so they have knowledge that is
necessary for our writing assignment.
Guided Practice: Together, we will pick our Explorers and discuss and address

look at different resources together, so students know exactly
where to go when they research at home.

Independent Practice: Students will research their Explorers independently at home and
You do in class for the next few days. As they conduct their research,
they will save the links to their resources to revisit them and put
them in the bibliography at the end of their paper. Students will
also begin their Plot Planner A and B, asking for information
about the Native tribes and Explorer.

Closure: At the end of the lesson, I will ask the students if they all know
who their Explorer is and if they have found one book or website
that has information that they can use for their Plot Planner A
and B.
