Engagement The teacher will begin the lesson on a zoom meeting. *

Active prior knowledge:


The teacher will ask students “Why do we need shade from the sun?” The
teacher will give the students a few seconds to think about it and then begin
taking answers. The teacher then charts down each thing the students are saying
on a white board behind her.

The teacher will then ask students, “What is a tent?” As the students are thinking
about what a tent is, the teacher will pull up examples of tents, in case some
students have not had an opportunity to see what a tent is.

Engagement In your journal, write down one reason you think tents are helpful when

After writing in their journal, the teacher will let each student share with the

Exploration The students will watch two videos on Youtube about The Sun. The first video
talks about how the sun effects the earth. The second video talks about ways to
hide from the sun and create a form of shade.

continue on in the unit of Suns effect on Earth. The teacher will stop throughout
the lesson and discuss with the students their thoughts about the sun and tents,
and why we use tent when going camping.

Elaboration The students will create a tent using various materials found at home. The goal
of the project is to keep an ice cube from melting.
You may use any material found to create your tent.
You will take picture of the following:
-Drawing of the tent from our journal entry
-Materials used
-Progress Photos
-Final Product
-Picture with the ice under the tent in the sun
-Did the ice melt? Yes or no

The student, with the help of a parent, will create a PowerPoint of the required
pictures and upload the final PowerPoint in google classroom.
Example will be posted into google classroom.

Evaluation The teacher will use the following rubric to assess the student’s tent.
