6 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

The product supplied shall be an epoxy resin, preimpregnated, woven


aramid fiber cloth.

6.1.2 Epoxy Resin

The epoxy resin system shall be of high quality suitable for the intended
purpose and non-corrosive to metals. The resin shall be free of all foreign
matter. The resin shall be capable of thoroughly wetting the aramid
fibers during impregnation.

7 DETAIL REQUIREMENTS
7.1 PREPREG

The prepreg shall possess a degree of tack and drape sufficient to ensure

easy handling in routine fabrication procedures in the temperature range

of +65˚F to +75˚F.

The required tack shall allow the prepreg to adhere to itself during hand
lay-up to the extent that stripping a ply will not appreciably disturb the

7.2 ARAMID CLOTH REQUIREMENTS

The aramid yarn used shall meet all the requirements of AMS 3901/3.
The woven aramid cloth shall meet all the requirements of AMS 3902.

Specific requirements for acceptable defects in the aramid cloth shall be

documented in the manufacturer’s process control document (PCD).

7.3 PHYSICAL

The prepreg shall meet all the physical requirements of Table I.

7.4 CHEMICAL

The prepreg shall be tested to the requirements shown in Table II using

vendor defined detail test methods approved by Bombardier Aerospace.


Infrared analysis shall be performed a minimum of once on each prepreg

batch. Liquid chromatography shall be performed a minimum of twice on


each prepreg batch. The results shall be maintained by each

manufacturer as part of the normal Quality Control retention of data.


The requirements shall be established by each manufacturer and results

outside this acceptable range will be deemed unacceptable.

7.5 APPEARANCE AND DIMENSIONAL

In general, the prepreg material shall be uniform in quality and condition,


clean and free from foreign materials, fiber misalignment or other defects
detrimental to fabrication, appearance and performance.

In general, prepreg shall be free from curled or folded selvages that
overlays non-selvage areas, wrinkles, resin rich areas, or other defects

in
detrimental to handling, lay-up, or structural properties.

Specific limits for acceptable defects shall be contained in the
manufacturer’s process control document (PCD). Visible indications of
impurities, dry areas, areas of nonuniformity, incomplete impregnation,

cured resin, or localized color differences in the impregnated cloth shall
be clearly identified as nonconforming areas.

Areas of nonconforming material shall be clearly marked on the edge of
the prepreg material at the start and the end of each defect.

The total maximum amount of nonconforming areas on each roll shall not
exceed 15% of the roll length. Specific inspection instructions shall be

The alignment of the warp and fill yarns shall be perpendicular to each

7.6 CURED LAMINATE

7.6.1 General

Laminates fabricated in accordance with Table III and cured in


accordance with Section 7.6.5 shall meet the following requirements.

Cured laminates and sandwich panels shall meet all the requirements of

7.6.5 Cure Cycle Requirements


Autoclave Curing
Each part cured in an autoclave shall be cured for 90 minutes minimum

at 250 ± 10˚F and a positive pressure of 45 ± 5 psi. When the autoclave

pressure reaches 15 psi the vacuum shall be vented to atmosphere. The
linear heat-up rate shall be a minimum of 1.0˚F/minute to a maximum of

8.0˚F/minute. Each part shall be cooled to 140˚F under full pressure at a
linear maximum cooldown rate of 8.0˚F/minute.

The material shall be layed up and processed in accordance with Table

The manufacturer shall develop and maintain a Process Control

Document (PCD) referring to the specification he is in the process of


qualifying to. The PCD shall define the manufacturing and quality

control requirements and procedures for assuring consistent, uniform and


compliant products. The supplier shall define in the PCD the raw
materials, significant items of processing equipment, process flow, and

the controlled process parameters which have a significant probability of


affecting the quality of the product. Also, a copy of the material

specification latest revision and amendment shall be included in the PCD.


The manufacturer PCD shall be approved and signed by Bombardier
Aerospace’s Materials and Processes Engineering Department and
available to any Bombardier Aerospace auditors.
Upon review of audit reports, PCD and qualification data, the potential
supplier will be advised whether qualification is granted.
All qualification testing specimens must be retained by the manufacturer
for a minimum period of three (3) years, and be available to Bombardier
Aerospace’s Materials and Processes Engineering upon request.

Qualified products, together with their manufacturer, will be shown in


BAEMM-001 “Bombardier Aerospace Engineering Materials Manual”.
Sustained qualification is dependent upon supplier meeting continuously
the requirements of the applicable material specification and any sub-tier

requirements, as set forth by Bombardier Aerospace. In the event that

the supplier falls short of the above mentioned requirements, Bombardier
Aerospace may revoke the qualified status of a product without prior

9 QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS


9.1 GENERAL

The manufacturer is responsible for the performance of all sampling,


inspection, and testing of each batch prior to submission of the material
to the purchaser for acceptance.
A copy of the test reports shall be submitted with each shipment showing
conformance with the requirements. The manufacturer is responsible for
obtaining certification of the fiber and cloth to the requirements of this
Specification from the manufacturer of the cloth.

9.2 ACCEPTANCE TESTS

The manufacturer shall be responsible for carrying out the production


sampling and batch inspection tests.

The tests in Table IX shall be carried out by both the material
manufacturer and purchaser for each prepreg batch within each

shipment and shall meet the requirements of Table I and VI. The

minimum number of rolls to be tested for each prepreg batch shall be as
per Table X.

The manufacturer shall furnish a copy of all test results showing
compliance with this Specification. This report shall include the purchase

order number, the material specification number, batch number and date
of manufacture.

Bombardier Aerospace reserves the right to perform any or all of the tests
outlined in this Specification. Any test resulting in a failure will
necessitate a return of that batch of material to the manufacturer.

Specific packaging, shipping and storage requirements shall be


documented in the manufacturer’s PCD.
A 10 foot sample shall be cut in a distinctive pattern from randomly
selected rolls from each batch of material in the shipment. The cut
