SUBJECT: FUEL - Indicating - Install COMPLIANCE: Douglas Aircraft Company

Low Fuel Pressure Indication recommends accomplishment at the
System. earliest practical maintenance period.

ANALYSIS: One operator reported one MANPOWER: All Groups

instance where 11,000 pounds of fuel
remained trapped in the center wing Total Man-Hours 295.3
fuel tank with 800 pounds of fuel Total Elapsed Hours 49.2
remaining in each main tank. The
excess fuel in the center wing fuel MATERIAL INFORMATION: Parts required
tank has been attributed to failure may be purchased as a complete kit from
of a boost pump. Failure of a center Douglas Aircraft Company, or may be
tank boost pump can result in premature procured as indicated. (See paragraph
use of main tank fuel. 3.A of Service Bulletin 28-53.)

DESCRIPTION: All Groups - Accomplishes

the following: (1) Installs two low
fuel pressure switches and associated
tube assemblies on center wing fuel
tank boost pumps located between
stations Xcw -58.688 and Xcw -104.500.
(2) Installs a relay bracket, bus
assembly, relay, and receptacle in the
electrical power center (EPC) at
station Y-160.000. (3) Modifies
annunciator panel. (4) Revises aircraft
wiring to accommodate low fuel pressure
system. Incorporation of a low fuel
pressure indication system which
utilizes pressure switches and an
annunciator caution light will provide
timely indication of a failed boost
pump condition.

EFFECTIVITY: DC-9-81, -82, -83, and

-87 (MD-81, -82, -83, and -87); MD-88
aircraft. (See Service Bulletin 28-53
for detailed Effectivity.)

Page 8 Revision 1 April 16/92
The low fuel pressure indication system modification will be
incorporated prior to delivery on all applicable DC-9-81, -82,
-83, -87, and MD-88 aircraft, manufacturer's fuselage numbers
1326, 1772, 1798, 1807, 1838 through 1861, 1863, 1864, 1866, 1868
through 1870, 1872, 1873, 1875, 1876, 1878, 1880, and subsequent.

(2) Spares Affected:

None.

B. Reason:

One operator reported one instance where 11,000 pounds of fuel remained
trapped in the center wing fuel tank with 800 pounds of fuel remaining
in each main tank. The excess fuel in the center wing fuel tank has
been attributed to failure of a boost pump. Failure of a center tank
boost pump can result in premature use of main tank fuel. Incorporation
of a low fuel pressure indication system which utilizes pressure
switches and an annunciator caution light will provide timely indication
of a failed boost pump condition.

C. Description:

All Groups

This modification accomplishes the following:

(1) Installs two low fuel pressure switches and associated tube
assemblies on center wing fuel tank boost pumps located between
stations Xcw=-58.688 and Xcw=-104.500.

(2) Installs a relay bracket, bus assembly, relay, and receptacle

in the electrical power center (EPC) at station Y=160.000.

(3) Modifies annunciator panel.

(4) Revises aircraft wiring to accommodate low fuel pressure system.

D. Compliance:

It is recommended that this modification be accomplished at the earliest

practical maintenance period.

E. Approval:

The resultant modification described in paragraph 1.C has been shown

to comply with the applicable Federal Aviation Regulations and is FAA
approved for the affected aircraft listed in paragraph 1.A.

F. Manpower:

NQIE: Man-hours are estimated based on work to be performed

by skilled personnel on aircraft/unit which has been
placed in a maintenance status. The man-hour/elapsed
time estimates do not include:

1. Preparation for the modification: Examples; defueling,

purging, placing work stands, opening standard access
doors, obtaining tools, and jacking when not essential
to the modification.

2. Nonproductive elapsed time: Examples; sealant or

adhesive cure time, cleaning, paint drying time, lunch
and/or rest periods, and quality assurance inspections.

3. Administrative functions: Examples; planning,

engineering liaison, parts requisition, shift change
coordination, and report writing.

Operators should take the above into consideration when

scheduling this modification.

Man-hours do not include time for wire routing on aircraft

equipped with forward auxiliary tank.

This modification may be accomplished in the following approximate

man-hours or elapsed hours per aircraft:

WARNING: TO AVOID INJURY TO MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL
OR DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT, MAKE CERTAIN
ADEQUATE PRECAUTIONS ARE TAKEN WHILE
PERFORMING ANY WORK IF ELECTRICAL POWER
IS APPLIED TO THE AIRCRAFT.

CAUTION: ELECTRICALLY GROUND THE AIRCRAFT.

GENERAL NOTES;

1. See Figure 1 for Scope of Modification.

2. Maintenance personnel should thoroughly familiarize themselves
with referenced drawings and manual chapters before starting this
modification.
3. For approved fastener and process materialsubstitutions, see
DC-9Structural Repair Manual, chapter 51-60-0, paragraphs
entitled "Interchangeability of Fastener" and "Interchangeabillty
of Material."
4. If the length of a fastener specified in this Service Bulletin
does not meet the acceptable installation standard, a fastener of
the same type or an approved substitution one increment longer or
shorter in length may be used.

5. A 1/8-inch thick stack of the same type washers called for in this
Service Bulletin is the maximumthickness which may be used under
fastener heador nut to counteract accumulation of tolerances.
EXCEPTION: Whenthe available fastener length
increment is greater than 1/16 inch,
a 3/16-inch thick stack of the same
type washers may be used.
6. If substitutions are used other than those listed in Douglas
approved publications, operator must obtain FAAor other
applicable regulatory agency approval from local authorized agency.
7. For hole preparation and rivet/hi-lok installation, see Structural
Repair Manual, chapter 51-00-0.

8. Identify added electrical components with applicable item numbers

as noted in service rework drawing SR09280010.

9. Insulation blankets may be pulled back as required to gain access
to work areas. Exercise care to avoid damage to insulation
blankets. If blankets are damaged, they must be repaired using
DMS 1984, Type 3, Class 2 tape.

10. New wiring must be routed in existing wire runs with compatible
systems to avoid systems interference. Where no compatible wire
runs exist, develop new wire run.

11. Length specified on "ADD" wires is cut length only. Finished length
to be determined upon installation of wire into parent wire assembly.

12. Use tying tape to string tie added wires to existing wire bundle
approximately 1.5 inches from edge of clamp and approximately 3.0
inches between clamps.

13. Sequence of instructions for removals, installations, and

modifications are intended as an aid. Actual sequence of operation
to accomplish this modification is at the operator's option.
