Session 2

Drawings? We don’t need no stinkin’

drawings…
Kelly Cone, The Beck Group

Class Description
2D Drawings are deeply entrenched in our industry from academia to
contracts to installation of the final product of our designs. But, do they need
to be? Based on several on-going internal case studies, Beck is attempting to
answer that question in practice one step at a time. While there is no simple
answer, we think we can make a case that for a lot of what we need to
communicate, drawings are no longer the best medium. Make no mistake
about it, drawings still serve a purpose in our process – but much of the
tradition and best practice we all know and love (or love to hate) are based
on a history of mistakes, lawsuits, and technological limitations. These are now
being challenged by the use of BIM. We will quickly walk you through several
case studies on removing or reducing drawings and annotations from portions
of the design and construction process and then hopefully get to a lively
debate about what we really still need drawings for, and what we don’t. We
are learning how to walk through a model-based process every day, and
expect we can learn a lot from each of you as well.

About the Speaker:

After receiving his Masters in Architecture degree from the University of Texas,
Kelly joined the Beck Group as an architectural intern and has been focusing
on technology and implementation of BIM practices and software since. In his
current role Kelly leads a team of talented BIM implementers and practitioners
to revolutionize how our projects are delivered. He speaks at BIM and Reality
Capture conferences worldwide focusing on process innovation and
integration.

Reference Materials
Generally, this class is a string of case studies, so a handout isn’t that
relevant. However, a number of documents are referenced in the
presentation and those may be relevant. Those documents will be
provided as a dataset, and this handout will be a quick reference to
those documents.

 BIM Execution Document – This is Beck’s BED/BEP.

 Exhibit N 3D Coordination Protocol – This is our standard

document to attach to subcontractor contracts on construction
projects. It basically defines what we require to enable some of
these model-based construction workflows.

 Model Documentation Matrix – This is a modified version of the

model matrix we reference in our BIM Execution Document.
Modifications are specifically to support a scope-by-scope
analysis of model based construction workflows.

That’s the whole deal, between these files and the presentation; you
should be set to go.
