RENTAL INFORMATION
Availability:
The Grace Street Theater is a shared theater that provides instruction space
for the Department of Art History and a performance/rehearsal space for
the Department of Dance and Choreography. While the Art History
Department and the Dance and Choreography Department are the primary
users, the Grace Street Theater can be scheduled for certain events when the
request does not disrupt the primary users' functions.

During the regular fall academic session:

Monday through Friday, after 3:30 pm.; weekends pending availability

During the regular spring academic session:

Monday through Friday, after 3:30 pm.

During the summer:

Monday through Saturday, flexible hours

Note: All times are subject to change. Please confirm all space scheduling
with the Grace Street Theater manager.

Usage:
The Grace Street Theater is specifically designed for lectures and for dance
productions, however, many theatrical and musical events also may be
efficiently accommodated. The audience seating is steeply raked for perfect
visibility and the stage is sprung for resiliency and to avoid injury to dancers.
As a result, the stage is fragile and cannot accommodate heavy equipment or
high impact activities or events. In order to preserve the integrity of the stage
and the primary users' function, the following criteria will be applied to
determine the appropriateness of other users:

• Requested time may not disrupt primary users' function.

• Sets may not be constructed on the stage.
• Pointed, hard-edged or sharp instruments or similar props may not be
used.
• Hard street shoes or high heels may not be worn on stage. The stage is
designed for bare feet and can accommodate clean tennis shoes with
black bottoms or other soft-soled exercise shoes only.

9
Rental policy:
Rental fees will be charged. The fees are established by the Department of
Dance and Choreography. In addition to the rental fee, the following
expenses will be the responsibility of the renter, if applicable:

• User must provide or hire the appropriate number of qualified backstage

crew to assure an efficient and safe event. The number and qualifications
of the crew will be discussed with the Grace Street Theater Technical
Director.
• If the user needs more than simple lighting (warm/cool, on/off), then a
lighting designer will be hired by the user with the approval of the Grace
Street Theater Technical Director.
• The user will provide/hire a box office assistant to administrate ticket
sales during performances. The Grace Street Theater Manager will advise
the user regarding appropriate hours, procedures and fees.
• The user will provide/hire ushers for each event. A dress code for the
ushers is in place. The Grace Street Theater Manager will advise the user.
• A VCU police officer will be hired for all evening events and will be the
responsibility of the user. A minimum of three hours is required. The
Grace Street Theater Manager will approve all personnel. Security is a
requirement and is not negotiable.

Booking requests:
Persons or organizations interested in renting the Grace Street Theater must
fill out a booking request form. This form is available online
(http://arts.vcu.edu/gracestreet/rentals/rental-request/) or by contacting
the Grace Street Theater Manager. This form includes dates and times
requested, rehearsals, tech needs and a detailed description of the
production/event.

VCU requires that all non-university renters provide the manager with
a certificate of insurance at the time of payment. All booking requests are
submitted to the Department of Dance and Choreography for approval.

Student crews:
VCU Dance majors may be available to serve as paid production crew
and ushers. Contact Carrie Cox for crew assistance at least two weeks
prior to the first usage date of the facility.
