What is the past continuous tense?

This tense we use for a particular moment in the past. Somtimes we called “progressive tense” or
“ past progressive”.

What is the structure?

Subjet+auxiliary be (past simple) +main verb(present participle)

Notes:

Past Simple: Was/Were( third or first person)

Present participle is can be called gerund that means verb+ing
For the negative sentence we put NOT between the verb to be in past simple and the verb in
gerund

For the questions we only change the subject and the auxiliary verb

EXAMPLES

 Morquecho was eating a banana the last week.

 Morquecho was NOT eating a banana the last week.
 Was she eating a banana the last week?
 Esther was Reading her favorite author Maquiavelo yesterday
 Esther was NOT Reading her favorite author Maquiavelo yesterday
 Was she Reading her favorite autor Maquiavelo yesterday?
 We were doing the math´s homework a few minutes ago
 We were NOT doing the math´s homework a few minutes ago
 Were we doing the math´s homework a few minutes ago?

How we use the past continuous?

Like we said we use past continuous for a particular moment in the past BUT it has not finish yet.

Example: I played soccer. The practice started from the 3 pm and finish at the 5 pm.

At the 4 pm I was playing soccer.Like we see this tense it is right in the middle.

EXAMPLES:

 I did not go because I was studying physics at the 5 pm the last week
 He was sweeping the courtyard at the 3 am
 We were feeding the dog at the 10 pm, so we did not broke the window

Past continuos + past simple

We use this plugin for story scenes or an action that it has been interrupted . The past continuous
works for a long expression and the past simple for a short expression. We join the two moments
with When or While (“whilst” in british accent)
EXAMPLES:
 I was sleeping when the earthquake began
 She was talking when the baby started to cry
 We were watching a serie when the neighbor broke the window
 He left the house while I was eating
 They broke the window while We were watching the tv

When we use past simple we use "when" and "while or whilst" we use past continuous.
There a verbs that we can not put "ing" this verbs called “stative”.
* feeling: hate, like, love,etc.
* senses: appear, feel, hear, etc.
* communication: agree, deny, disagree, etc.
* other states: be, belong, etc.
Like this we have rules to join “ing”
