Mid-Term Assignment

1. With reference to the various approaches to ECE select any two which you think are
most appropriate for young learners. Support your answer with relevant explanation.
(answer in approx. 350 – 400 words)

Maria Montessori

This method allows students to take their time to explore and understand concepts and activities at
their own pace. Naturally, the children would be motivated to attempt areas they find rather
challenging and, hence, hastening the learning process. This, then results into learning occurring at a
comfortable rate for each child individually, instead of imposing an equal rate on the entire
classroom.

Given that, learners are allowed to choose and work on activities by themselves, they would perform
tasks for the joy of it and not to just achieve end results in order to move on. Also, this will
encourage learners to put more focus onto the process than outcome, resulting into creativity
encouraged within the classroom.

Montessori pre-school students fancy/enjoy a curriculum and learning environment tailored to suit
their specific needs and capabilities, which allows them to explore and learn at their own pace and
terms. All items within the classroom are designed specifically so that they are within the reach of
the children and the furniture is sized for children to sit comfortably.

Friedrich Froebel

The Kindergarten Program encourages fun and play based learning. Young learners have a short
attention span and cannot focus on a particular object or activity for a long time. However, since the
method allows the children to be led by their own interests, they would stay focused on whatever
task they perform, making it an appropriate method of teaching. Learning solely from activity will
allow the learners to explore the idea and concept freely. Moreover, the constructive activity will
lead to the development of sensory awareness and physical dexterity within the children.

Froebel's gifts and occupation series can be used to support children’s self-initiated play as the
gifts and occupations are open-ended. This is also a good way of teaching children various
shapes, object sizes and colours without having to use the typical style of lecturing which often
leads to demotivation. Furthermore, learning through games, songs and various other activities
allows children to become confident in interacting with others. Lastly, according to Froebelian
principles, the whole child is considered to be important; Health - physical and mental is
emphasised, as well as the importance of feelings, thinking and spiritual aspects. This good
rapport, results into higher motivation levels within students
