Investigating Specific Heat Capacity

Procedure:
1. Add 100cm3 of solution into a beaker and measure the mass of water added.
2. Use thermometer to measure the initial temperature of water.
3. Use a metal rod connected with a power supply to heat the water. Measure the voltage
using voltmeter, current using ammeter.
4. Place lid on the beaker and heat the solution.
5. Note the time period for which the solution is heated.
6. Continuously stir the solution using stirring rod.
7. Record the final temperature.
Analysis of data:
1. Calculate the energy supplied using E = Voltage x current x time
2. Find the change in temperature = Final temperature – initial temperature
3. Specific heat capacity = energy supplied/ change in temperature x mass of solution
