Locate the PFD and secondary instruments (airspeed indicator, altimeter, and attitude indicator) in the
pilot’s primary field of view. The pilot’s primary field of view is defined as ± 30° horizontal cone
measured from the centerline of the pilot’s seat forward, with the seat adjusted for the pilot’s nominal
eye position. Installation location approval should be sought from the FSDO (Flight Standards District
Office).
● Other avionics required for approved flight operations, relocated as a result of this installation,
must remain readily accessible to the pilot.
● The resulting flightdeck design must include supplemental caution and warning means (visual or
audio) consistent with a Functional Hazard Assessment (FHA).
● The panel assembly must include placard content equivalent to that existing prior to the
modification.
- 18 -
Installation Manual

● After installing the PFD, you must perform an aircraft-specific electrical load analysis to assure
adequate generating system margins (15%).
2.3.3 Cooling
The PFD uses two internal fans; an inlet and outlet fan, which provide adequate cooling. The PFD
requires approximately 2 inches clearance, top and bottom, to allow for proper air circulation.
Note: Do not attempt to install a PFD into a panel that is oriented more than 10° (± 1°) from vertical.
See Section 2.3.2, “Location and Viewing Angle” on page 18 for primary viewing guidance.

Ensure that all avionics, as appropriate to your aircraft, are connected to the PFD in accordance with
the wiring diagrams in Appendix I: PFD Wiring Diagrams, on page 77 through Appendix R: System
Interconnect, ADF, on page 131.
The Pitot (Pt) and Static (Ps) connections on the PFD are marked accordingly. In addition, the Pt
connector on the PFD is color-coded red. It is recommended that the aircraft pitot connector also be
color coded red to help assure proper connection. The installer must assure that the pitot and static
connectors are fully seated. This is indicated by the engagement of the connector mounted locking
bracket.
Pitot-static pneumatic lines must be installed so as to provide positive drainage (inhibit water
entrapment at the low point(s) of the tubing runs).

● Avionics or Sensor Suite—shows the suite of sensors for which the PFD is configured to
operate.
For PFDs with Release 6.1 and later, ASI configurations also display. The ASI configurations can be
changed or set from the Airspeed Indicator Configuration page, discussed on Section 3.2.3,
“Configuring the ASI (Airspeed Indicator) (Release 6.2 and Later)” on page 27.
Note: For non-Envision installations, always select an aircraft model, even if the System Page
displays the aircraft make that you are working on. The PFD requires this information to
correctly set up internal data.
● Back to PFD—Saves your changes and returns you to the flight state of the PFD display. This
button is available on all System Setup and Information Pages. Always power cycle the PFD after
making changes and returning Back to PFD.
● Configure ASI (Airspeed Indicator)—Allows you to change the factory default V-Speed
indications. For Envision installations, allows you to set the V-Speeds for the aircraft.
● Sets the factory default V-Speeds for that model (Except where Aircraft Make is Aftermarket. For
Envision installations, the V-Speeds are set to 0.).
● If engine instruments are available for this aircraft make and model, configures the default engine
instruments specific for that model.
● Sets up the default avionics configuration (“Sensor Suite”) for that model.
● Provides the instrument panel tilt information for that model to the AHRS alignment process.
Note: For SW Part Number 530-00177-000 Dual PFD aircraft only: If you swap the PFDs in a dual
PFD airplane (that is, move the Pilot PFD to the Copilot PFD position and vice versa), you
must cycle through the A/C Model modes on both PFDs, even if the A/C model appears to be
correct. For SW PN 530-00183-000 and later, this step is not needed.
Note: It is very important that you select the correct aircraft model because some of the features
available for the PFD are dependent on the aircraft model. Additionally, the internal
implementation of some features may differ slightly; setting the aircraft model incorrectly can
cause the PFD to not function as expected.

3.2.3 Configuring the ASI (Airspeed Indicator) (Release 6.2 and Later)
For most aircraft, the Airspeed Indicator Configuration page displays the current factory defaults. The
ASI displays the V-Speeds and other important information.
Note: For Envision installations, you must manually configure the airspeed indicator.
Note: In general, do not change the factory defaults unless instructed to do so by the aircraft
manufacturer or STC holder.
Note: If you make changes to the VSpeeds, follow the procedure below exactly. Any deviation
may cause the VSpeed edits not to be saved, which may result in inaccurate indications on the
Airspeed Indicator.
3. Enter the following information, which can be found in the Pilot Operating Handbook or in the
Airspeed Configuration Data Document (if available) for the specific aircraft (and model, if
applicable):
■ ASI Type— Select from: Fixed VMO, VMO/ MMO, Fixed VNE, or Variable VNE.
■ Number of Engines—Select Single,Twin or Inline Twin.

■ ASI and Altimeter Scale—Select the airspeed and altimeter scale as appropriate for the
aircraft performance type:
◆ Normal Range Aircraft—44 knots/440 feet
◆ Extended Range Aircraft—88 knots/1200 feet
Note: Setting the airspeed and altimeter automatically sets the vertical speed scale, even though
vertical speed does not display on the Airspeed Indicator Configuration page.
– When set to 44 knots /440 feet, the vertical speed scale is ±2000 fpm.
– When set to 88 knots /1200 feet, the vertical speed scale is ±3000 fpm.
Note: GAMA 12 - Recommended Practices and Guidelines for an Integrated Cockpit /Flight Deck in
a 14 CFR Part 23 (or equivalent) Airplane recommends that “the range visible on the airspeed
tape must be appropriate to airplane performance; but should not be less than ±15 percent of
VNE or VMO, as appropriate.” For example, if VNE is 200 kts, the band should show a range of
60 kts. Reference Pilot Operating Handbook for aircraft's VNE or VMO value.

9. Select Back to PFD.
10. Verify that the HDG mode accurately tracks the Heading Bug.
Note: In dual PFD installations, the Copilot PFD may show a slight error between Heading Bug and
heading when in HDG mode. This is normal and is due to normal tolerances between the
heading systems in the two PFDs.
11. If the aircraft has an FD, verify that the FD Steering Command Bars are above the ARS (aircraft
reference symbol) with no gap between the two.
12. Engage the NAV mode (without GPSS) on the autopilot.
13. Verify that the NAV mode accurately tracks a flightplan (you will need to enter a flightplan or
waypoint).
Autopilot calibration is now complete.
➥ If the autopilot does not track the Heading Bug or NAV mode correctly, repeat the steps in this
procedure.

4.8 External Air Data Filter Setup (Release 7.1.1 and later)
This procedure describes how to establish the external Air Data Module filter Tau constants if the
Airspeed indicator, True Airspeed (TAS) indicator, Vertical Speed (VS) indicator, or Altimeter display
unacceptable jitter. The Tau constants are settable time-based constants used by the external air data
filter to provide smooth and responsive display of Airspeed, TAS, VS, and Altitude.
Note: Perform this procedure only if there is unacceptable display jitter of one or more air data
parameters when using an external Air Data Module.
➥ In dual PFD installations, you must set the air data filter Tau values on both PFDs. You must use the
same values for both PFDs. You may set the values on both PFDs at the same time.
Note: For instructions on how to change the external air data filter Tau values, see Section 3.5.1,
“Avionics Page 2 (Release 7.1.1 and later)” on page 35.
1. For air data that need filtering, begin by setting their filter parameters to the initial test tau values
listed below:
Table 23: External Air Data Filter Test
Filter parameter Initial Test Tau Value
Airspeed Indicator Filter Tau 0.3 seconds
True Airspeed Filter Tau 0.3 seconds
Vertical Speed Indicator Filter Tau 0.9 seconds
Altimeter Filter Tau 0.3 seconds
Note: Increasing the tau value will smooth the displayed data and eliminate jitter. However, it will
also add more latency. Select the smallest possible tau value that eliminates unacceptable
display jitter of each air data parameter.
2. Hand fly the aircraft as instructed in steps a - i. During each flight phase, check the following:
■ Verify that each air data parameter (Airspeed, TAS, VS, and Altitude) displays smoothly or
with acceptable jitter.
■ Verify that each air data parameter displays without excessive lag or overshoot.
Note: Begin each of the following tests from level flight in cruise configuration.

PFD P733-27 S55X P551-29 Heading datum to the autopilot is the difference between the
Analog Gnd HDG RTN Heading Bug and current mag heading. If the Heading Bug
and mag heading are the same, the heading datum is 0.0
VDC. As the Heading Bug moves right of center, the voltage
increases at 550 mVDC / degree. As the Heading Bug
moves left of center, the voltage decreases at 550 mVDC.
The voltage limits at ± 25 degrees. This emulates the
Bendix-King KCS-55(A) heading system.
Nav – PFD P733-40 S55X P551-11 Mag Heading is combined with Course Pointer to create
Course Pointer Analog Out 3 DC CRS HI Course Datum.
PFD P733-41 S55X P551-12 Course datum to the autopilot is the difference between the
Analog Gnd CRS RTN course pointer and current mag heading. If the course
pointer and the mag heading are the same, the course
datum is 0.0 VDC. As the course pointer moves right of
center, the voltage increases at 210 mVDC / degree. As the
course pointer moves left of center, the voltage decreases at
210 mVDC / degree. The voltage limits at ± 60 degrees. This
emulates the Bendix-King KCS-55(A) heading system.
Nav – CDI PFD P733-24 S55X P551-30 The PFD transmits a DC analog signal to the autopilot that
Analog Out 5 L-R +RT represents a course deviation. The input at the autopilot is
differential and the PFD transmits the course deviation on
the + side and connects signal ground on the – side. Full
PFD P733-23 S55X P551-31
scale deflection is ± 150 mVDC where positive means the
Analog Gnd L-R +LT needle is right of center as measured from the + signal to the
– signal. The course deviation is 1.0 degree per 15 mVDC
so full scale deflection at 150 mVDC is 10 degree error.

PFD #1 P733-27 1500 P1-7 Heading datum to the autopilot is the difference between
Analog Gnd HDG RTN the Heading Bug and current mag heading. If the
Heading Bug and mag heading are the same, the
heading datum is 0.0 VDC. As the Heading Bug moves
right of center, the voltage increases at 550 mVDC /
degree. As the Heading Bug moves left of center, the
voltage decreases at 550 mVDC. The voltage limits at ±
25 degrees. This emulates the Bendix-King KCS-55(A)
heading system.
Nav – PFD #1 P733-40 1500 P1-11 Mag Heading is combined with Course Pointer to create
Course Pointer Analog Out 3 DC CRS HI Course Datum.
PFD #1 P733-41 1500 P1-12 Course datum to the autopilot is the difference between
Analog Gnd CRS RTN the course pointer and current mag heading. If the course
pointer and the mag heading are the same, the course
datum is 0.0 VDC. As the course pointer moves right of
center, the voltage increases at 210 mVDC / degree. As
the course pointer moves left of center, the voltage
decreases at 210 mVDC / degree. The voltage limits at
±60 degrees. This emulates the Bendix-King KCS-55(A)
heading system.
Nav – PFD #1 P733-24 S55X P551-30 The PFD transmits a DC analog signal to the autopilot
CDI Analog Out 5 L-R +RT that represents a course deviation. The input at the
autopilot is differential and the PFD transmits the course
deviation on the + side and connects signal ground on the
PFD #1 P733-23 S55X P551-31
– side. Full scale deflection is ± 150 mVDC where
Analog Gnd L-R +LT positive means the needle is right of center as measured
from the + signal to the – signal. The course deviation is
1.0 degree per 15 mVDC so full scale deflection at 150
mVDC is 10 degree error.
Nav - CDI PFD #1 P733-24 1500 P1-38 The PFD transmits the same DC analog signal for
Analog Out 5 L-R +RT localizer deviation as it does for VOR course deviation.
The autopilot interprets the CDI needle the same way as
with the VOR source except with higher gain settings.
PFD #1 P733-23 1500 P1-39
Localizer deviation is measured in DDM or Difference in
Analog Gnd L-R +LT Depth of Modulation which is the relative signal strengths
of the 90 Hz modulation left lobe and 150 Hz modulation
right lobe. +0.155 DDM is full scale deflection right of
center and –0.155 DDM is full scale deflection left of
center.

The annunciators are broken down into six groups, placed left to right across the PFD. Active modes
display in green text. Failure states display in amber. Armed modes are shown in white. When a
failure condition is set for any of the active or armed modes, the mode annunciator will be displayed in
amber, and will alternate at 1 Hz with the FAIL annunciator. For example, if the backcourse mode is
failing, it will flash “REV” - “FAIL” - “REV” - “FAIL” … until the failure condition is cleared.
The bit numbers and their associated values for each label are listed. For example, in the first row, AP
INIT is activated by setting Bits 20 and 21 to zero in Label 300.
All active mode annunciations are green. Armed mode annunciations are white. All other
annunciations are green, except in a failure condition, when the annunciations become amber and
alternate with the “FAIL” annunciation.
