2.3 Installing the Entegra or Envision EXP5000 PFD

2.3.1 Installation Considerations
● Before installing the PFD, carefully assess the most effective positioning of the PFD based on
space availability, viewing angle, cooling, and wiring considerations. Before you start, plan your
installation by carefully reviewing all installation documentation, including mechanical and
electrical instructions.
● Avidyne recommends that you install the PFD with the MFD uninstalled to provide better access.
Install the pitot and static lines after the PFD has been installed into the panel to avoid kinking the
hoses.
● Use the appendices found in this manual for guidance with PFD dimensions and panel cutout
requirements.
● Locate the magnetometer a minimum of 3 feet away from electromagnetic field generating
disturbances that can be produced by equipment such as motors and pumps.
● Install the OAT probe in a zone 3 lightning area (an area not subject to lightning attachment) as
described in SAE ARP5414, “Aircraft Lightning Zoning”, dated December 1999. Place the OAT
sensor underneath the wing in a free-air stream.
● The Entegra or Envision PFD contains software developed in accordance with DO-178B Level B
and C requirements. The Magnetometer contains software developed in accordance with DO-
178B Level B (Rev. 01 or later) or Level C (Rev 00) requirements.
● Perform the structural aspects of the installation in accordance with AC43.13-2A, Chapter 1.
● Only install the PFD in conjunction with a system(s) that has (have) independent sensing and
display of altitude, airspeed, attitude and heading.
● The secondary attitude indicator shall be powered (electrically or pneumatically) separately from
the PFD in event of loss of primary power source to the PFD.
● If you remove or replace a PFD, you must follow the full setup procedure for the new PFD.
2.4 Location and Viewing Angle
The PFD is designed to be panel-mounted and held in place by four captive 10-32 screws. A standard
1/4” wide slotted screwdriver is required. Install each screw with 30 +/− 0.5in-lb. of torque. Locate the
PFD in the panel so that the pilot can easily reach all knobs and controls.

Locate the PFD and secondary instruments (airspeed indicator, altimeter, and attitude indicator) in the
pilot’s primary field of view. The pilot’s primary field of view is defined as ± 30° horizontal cone
measured from the centerline of the pilot’s seat forward, with the seat adjusted for the pilot’s nominal
eye position. Installation location approval should be sought from the FSDO (Flight Standards District
Office).

Keep in mind the following:

● Other avionics, required for approved flight operations, relocated as a result of this installation,
must remain readily accessible to the pilot.
● The resulting flightdeck design must include supplemental caution and warning means (visual or
audio) consistent with a Functional Hazard Assessment (FHA).
● The panel assembly must include placard content equivalent to that existing prior to the
modification.
● After installing the PFD, you must perform an aircraft-specific electrical load analysis to assure
adequate generating system margins (15%).

Installation Manual
P/N 600-00141-000 Rev 03

2.4.1 Cooling
The PFD uses two internal fans; an inlet and outlet fan, which provide adequate cooling. The PFD
requires approximately 2 inches clearance, top and bottom, to allow for proper air circulation.

2.4.2 Mounting the PFD

To install the PFD, you need to make a cutout hole in the cockpit panel. See Appendix H: PFD Cutout
Dimensions, Landscape, on page 41 for PFD Cutout Dimensions. The PFD is held in place with four
captive socket head cap screws with 10-32 thread size. These require a panel thickness of 0.080" for
proper engagement and proper nut plate. Hole patterns and placements are illustrated in the
corresponding appendices. A positive ground path must be established between the PFD chassis and
airframe ground (<100 milliOhms).

Note: Do not attempt to install a PFD into a panel that is oriented more than 10° (± 1°) from vertical.
See Section 2.4, “Location and Viewing Angle” on page 4 for primary viewing guidance.

2.4.3 Electrical and Sensor Interfaces

Power to the PFD is provided directly from the aircraft, there is no on/off switch. The PFD primary
voltage is nominally 28 VDC. See Appendix I: PFD Wiring Diagrams, on page 42 for specific wiring
interface instructions. The PFD should be wired to the aircraft dimming bus (if equipped) to control the
bezel button backlight brightness via the cockpit panel brightness control.

Wiring aspects of the design, including wire type and size selection must conform to Advisory Circular
AC 43.13-1B, Section 5, Electrical Wire Rating. Wire conforming to MIL-W-22759/16 or MIL-C-27500
satisfies the burn requirements stated in 14 CFR 23.1359.

2.4.4 Pitot-Static Interface

The PFD connects directly to the aircraft pitot-static system. Use the following pressure connectors:

Quantity Part Number Description Supplier

2 PMC1703 3/16” tube ID, barb style, quick clip, Acetal Colder Products

The Pitot (Pt) and Static (Ps) connections on the PFD are marked accordingly. In addition, the Pt
connector on the PFD is color-coded red. It is recommended that the aircraft pitot connector also be
color coded red to help assure proper connection. The installer must assure that the pitot and static
connectors are fully seated. This is indicated by the engagement of the connector mounted locking
bracket.

Pitot-static pneumatic lines must be installed so as to provide positive drainage (inhibit water
entrapment at the low point(s) of the tubing runs).

3.2 System Page

Figure 2: System Page

The System Page provides summary information about the PFD and its current setup. The information
on the System Page depends on the your aircraft and PFD software version.

Depending on the PFD software version, the following minimum information is displayed:

● PFD Serial Number (or Serial Number)

● S/W Version ID
● Aircraft Make

Note: For Envision installations, the Aircraft Make is Aftermarket.

● Aircraft Model (or Model)

Note: Always select an aircraft make and model, even if the System Page displays the aircraft make
and model that you are working on. The PFD requires this information to correctly set up
internal data.

● Pitch Offset Setting

● Avionics or Sensor Suite—shows the suite of sensors for which the PFD is configured to
operate.

-7-
Installation Manual
P/N 600-00141-000 Rev 03

For PFDs installed after Release 6.1, ASI configurations also display. The ASI configurations can be
changed or set from the Airspeed Indicator Configuration page, discussed on Section 3.2.3,
“Configuring the ASI (Airspeed Indicator) (Release 6.2 and Later)” on page 9.

The buttons on the System Page are:

● A/C Model—Allows you to select the aircraft model.

● Back to PFD—Saves your changes and returns you to the flight state of the PFD display. This
button is available on all System Setup and Information Pages.
● Configure ASI (Airspeed Indicator)—Allows you to change the factory default V-Speed
indications. For Envision installations, allows you to set the V-Speeds for the aircraft.

3.2.1 Selecting the Aircraft Model

Selecting the aircraft model accomplishes the following:

1. Sets the factory default V-Speeds for that model (Except where Aircraft Make is Aftermarket. For
Envision installations, the V-Speeds are set to 0.).
2. If engine instruments are available for this aircraft make and model, configures the engine
instruments specific for that model.
3. Sets up the default avionics configuration (“Sensor Suite”) for that model.
4. Provides the instrument panel tilt information for that model to the AHRS alignment process.

Note: For SW Part Number 530-00177-000 Dual PFD aircraft only: If you swap the PFDs in a dual
PFD airplane (that is, move the Pilot PFD to the Copilot PFD position and vice versa), you
must cycle through the A/C Model modes on both PFDs, even if the A/C model appears to be
correct. For SW PN 530-00183-000, this step is not needed.

Note: It is very important that you select the correct aircraft model because some of the features
available for the PFD are dependent on the aircraft model. Additionally, the internal
implementation of some features may differ slightly; setting the aircraft model incorrectly can
cause the PFD to not function as expected.

➤ To select the aircraft model:

1. Press A/C Model, as required, until the appropriate aircraft model displays on the button label.

Notes: The model field in the middle of the page displays the full name of the selected model.

For aircraft models that display a “+” suffix in the button label, OAT is suppressed from the
display.

2. When you are done, either:

■ Press Back to PFD—Saves your changes and returns to the PFD flight state.
■ Use the left knob to move to another Setup tab. As you move between pages, your changes
are saved.
➥ Generally, after selecting the A/C model, the only additional setup required is to perform a Mag
Calibration, described in Section 3.7.1, “Calibrating the Magnetometer” on page 21.

1. Press and hold the right knob while rotating it to the desired pitch offset setting.
2. When you are done, press Back to PFD to save your changes.
3. Repeat as needed until the pitch offset is satisfactory.
➥ The default setting for pitch offset is the nominal instrument panel pitch angle. To reset the offset to
default, press the right knob.

3.2.3 Configuring the ASI (Airspeed Indicator) (Release 6.2 and Later)
For most aircraft, the Airspeed Indicator Configuration page displays the current factory defaults. The
ASI displays the V-Speeds and other important information.

For Envision installations, you must manually configure the airspeed indicator.

Note: In general, do not change the factory defaults unless instructed to do so by the aircraft
manufacturer or STC holder.

Note: If you make changes to the VSpeeds, follow the procedure below exactly. Any deviation
may cause the VSpeed edits not to be saved, which may result in inaccurate indications on the
Airspeed Indicator.

➤ To configure the ASI:

1. Before you enter the Airspeed Indicator Configuration page, cycle power to the PFD and the enter
ths System Comfiguration Page as discussed on page 6.
2. Press Configure ASI. The Airspeed Indicator Configuration page displays:

3.7.1 Calibrating the Magnetometer

Approximate duration: 30 minutes (assuming airplane is free to rotate 360° without magnetic disturbances)
Required equipment: ■ Installed PFD
■ Installed magnetometer
■ Approved Handheld Site Compass
Recommended 2 avionics technicians:
personnel: ■ One in the aircraft to monitor procedure and push required line select keys on the
PFD.
■ One outside of the aircraft to precisely align the aircraft to each of 12 calibration
points (the Handheld Site Compass operator).

Note: The aircraft can be manually moved or taxied to each calibration point. The technician outside
of the aircraft should site each heading from about 20 ft. in front of the aircraft by aligning the
site on the handheld compass to the nose and up the vertical stabilizer for precise alignment at
each of the 12 headings to be calibrated.

1. Make sure that:

■ The calibration procedure is done in a known magnetically clean area at least 200 ft. from
metal structures of any kind and not above areas that may have underground fuel tanks or
steel rebar in the concrete ramp. Avidyne suggests using an approved compass rose for this
procedure.
■ Aircraft doors are closed.
■ Flaps are in retracted position.
■ The airplane is reasonably level.
2. Turn battery switch to on. Consider attaching an external power cart until ready for step 5 unless
you are performing this calibration with the engine running and alternator(s) on. All other aircraft
equipment shall be operating.
3. Allow the PFD to align (approximately 3 minutes) until the ADAHRS countdown timer expires and
is removed from the display.
4. Wait in the aligned state for an additional 10 minutes.
5. Enter System Setup as described in Section 3.1, “Accessing the Setup Pages” on page 6 and use
the left knob to scroll to the Calibration Tab.

(90, 180, 270, 360) as indicated by the Handheld Site Compass:
■ For single PFD installations, verify that the Pilot PFD heading display is within ± 4° of the
Handheld Site Compass.
■ For dual PFD installations, to prevent pilot/copilot miscompares, verify that the Copilot PFD
heading display is within ± 2° of the Handheld Site Compass.
The calibration is now complete.

3.7.2 Calibrating the IRU (Envision Only, Release 6.2 and Later)

Note: For Release 6.0 and later releases, including all Release 6.2 releases other than Envision, the
correct IRU pitch and roll are set when you select the aircraft make and model. Do not use IRU
calibration except for Envision installations.

For Release 6.2 Envision installations, you may need to enter the IRU pitch and roll values manually.

4.2 Pitot-Static Leak Check

Perform a pitot-static leak check anytime the pitot-static ports are disconnected from (and then
reconnected to) the PFD. Ensure that you perform the pitot-static leak check in accordance with the
specific Aircraft Maintenance Manual.

4.3 Electro-Magnetic Compatibility (EMC) Check

The EMC check verifies that all of the electronic systems installed on the aircraft are compatible.
Operating the PFD should not result in Nav flags, constant location lightning strikes on the WX-500
sensor, noise on COMM channels, or other phenomena.

➤ Check the following systems:

● Comm Radios—Scan through radio channels to ensure there is no interference caused by the
PFD. Check random frequencies from 118MHZ through 136.975MHZ as well as your local ground
and tower frequencies to ensure there is no break in squelch due to the installation.
● GPS—Ensure that correct position displays and that there is no change in satellite signal strength
with the PFD powered off.
● Autopilot—Ensure that autopilot self-test passes OK with the PFD powered on.
● Other Instruments—Verify there is no adverse effect on other instruments with the PFD powered
on.
4.4 Magnetic Compass Swing
After installation and EMI checks are complete, perform a magnetic compass “swing” in accordance
with the aircraft installation manual for updating the heading correction card in accordance with 14
CFR 23.1327 and 23.1547.

4.5 Dual PFD Checks

➤ For dual PFD installations:
1. Verify that no yellow alert messages are displayed.
2. On either PFD, cycle through all of the available Nav sources and verify that the Nav source on the
other PFD matches the one where the changes were made.
3. If equipped with a Copilot PFD Controls Inhibit switch, perform the following additional check:
a. Set the Copilot PFD Controls Inhibit switch in the “Inhibit” position. Verify that the Nav, Hdg
Bug, Alt Bug, VSI Bug (if applicable), IAS Bug (if applicable), and Baro Set button labels are
removed.
b. Set the Copilot PFD Controls Inhibit switch in the “Normal” position. Verify that the button
labels are restored.
4. If equipped with an ADAHRS select switch, perform the following additional check:
a. Set the ADAHRS select switch to ADAHRS 2. Verify that the ”ADAHRS 2” indicator displays at
the top of the Copilot PFD.
b. Set the ADAHRS select switch to ADAHRS 1. Verify that the ”ADAHRS 1” indicator displays at
the top of the Pilot PFD.
c. Set the switch to the normal, center position.

4.6 Autopilot Inflight Setup and Checkout

For S-TEC Intelliflight 2100, System 1500, System 55X, or System 55SR autopilots, ensure that the
autopilot is configured as a KCS-55 compatible unit. See the S-TEC Intelliflight 2100, System 1500,
System 55X, System 55SR Installation Manual for details.

➥ In dual PFD installations, the procedure below needs to be performed on both PFDs. The
procedure, however, can be conducted simultaneously on both PFDs.

4.6.1 Preliminary Checkout Steps

➤ To start system checkout:
1. While NAV (without GPSS) mode is engaged on the System 55X or System 55SR, using a GNS-
4XX GPS source, insert an appropriately sized screwdriver into the slotted hole to perform the
alignment procedures in accordance with the System 55X or System 55SR Installation Manual.
2. Perform a NAV course alignment by slowly adjusting the screw until the aircraft closely tracks the
GPS course. Allow the aircraft to stabilize between adjustments. This may take several minutes
and require several adjustments.

4.6.2 Autopilot Checkout for FD-Enabled S-TEC System 55X and System 1500 Autopilots

Notes: Perform the following steps in-flight in smooth air.

This procedure is not required for Intelliflight 2100 autopilots.

➤ To begin inflight calibration for aircraft equipped with Flight Director-enabled PFDs and S-TEC System
55X or S-TEC System 1500 autopilots:

1. Select the AP/FD or AP ON position on the aircraft Autopilot Master switch.

2. Engage the S-TEC 55X or 1500 in HDG and ALT mode and allow aircraft to “settle on Heading
Bug” The Heading Bug and flight director may be offset from the lubber line by several degrees.
3. Turn OFF all GPS/NAV systems
4. Enter System Setup mode on the PFD as described in Section 3.1, “Accessing the Setup Pages”
on page 6.
5. Turn ON all GPS/NAV systems.
6. Use the left knob to scroll to the Calibration Tab.
7. Select Perform A/P Cal
8. Select Sync HDG. The autopilot should immediately command the aircraft to turn toward the
Heading Bug.
9. Select Back to PFD.
10. Verify that the HDG mode accurately tracks the Heading Bug.

Note: In dual PFD installations, the Copilot PFD may show a slight error between Heading Bug and
heading when in HDG mode. This is normal and is due to normal tolerances between the
heading systems in the two PFDs.

11. Verify the Flight Director Command Bars are above the aircraft reference symbol with no gap
between the two.
12. Engage NAV (without GPSS) mode on the autopilot.

- 27 -
Installation Manual
P/N 600-00141-000 Rev 03

13. Verify that NAV mode accurately tracks a flightplan (you will need to enter a flightplan or
waypoint).
Autopilot calibration is now complete.

➥ If the autopilot does not track the Heading Bug or NAV mode correctly, repeat the steps in this
procedure.

4.6.3 Autopilot Checkout for Non-Flight-Director Enabled PFDs (S-TEC 55X and S-TEC 55SR)

Note: Perform the following steps in-flight in smooth air.

➤ To begin in-flight calibration for Non-Flight-Director Enabled PFDs:

1. Engage the 55X or 55SR in HDG mode and allow aircraft to “settle on Heading Bug” (If Heading
Bug agrees with aircraft heading stop procedure here, other wise continue calibration steps
below).
2. Turn OFF all GPS/NAV sources.
3. Enter System Setup mode on the PFD as described in Section 3.1, “Accessing the Setup Pages”
on page 6.
4. Turn ON all GPS/NAV sources.
5. Use the left knob to scroll to the Calibration Tab.

7. Select Sync HDG. The autopilot should immediately command the aircraft to turn toward the
Heading Bug.
8. Select Back to PFD.
9. Verify that HDG mode accurately tracks Heading Bug.
10. Engage NAV (without GPSS) mode on the autopilot.
11. Verify that NAV mode accurately tracks a flightplan (you will need to enter a flightplan or
waypoint).
Autopilot calibration is complete.

➥ If the autopilot does not track the Heading Bug or NAV mode correctly, repeat the steps in this
procedure.

4.7 Cleaning the EXP5000 Screen

If the EXP5000 screen should become dirty due to fingerprints or dust, clean the screen using the following
materials and methods:

● A clean, soft lint free cloth such as 3M Ultra-Brite Cloth # 2011 or similar.
● A cleaning solution composed of de-ionized water or isopropyl alcohol (IPA).
Always apply the cleaning solution directly onto the cloth. Never spray cleaner directly onto the screen.

Note: Use caution when using IPA as it is flammable.

Using any other chemicals or materials voids the warranty.

The EXP5000 screen is made of a plastic film that is vulnerable to scratches, damage by sharp articles or
improper cleaners. Use care when cleaning.

Heading – PFD P733-26 S55X P551-28 Mag Heading is combined with Heading Bug to create
Heading Bug Analog Out 2 DC HDG HI Heading Datum.

PFD P733-27 S55X P551-29 Heading datum to the autopilot is the difference between the
Analog Gnd HDG RTN Heading Bug and current mag heading. If the Heading Bug
and mag heading are the same, the heading datum is 0.0
VDC. As the Heading Bug moves right of center, the voltage
increases at 550 mVDC / degree. As the Heading Bug
moves left of center, the voltage decreases at 550 mVDC.
The voltage limits at ± 25 degrees. This emulates the
Bendix-King KCS-55(A) heading system.
Nav – PFD P733-40 S55X P551-11 Mag Heading is combined with Course Pointer to create
Course Pointer Analog Out 3 DC CRS HI Course Datum.

PFD P733-41 S55X P551-12 Course datum to the autopilot is the difference between the
Analog Gnd CRS RTN course pointer and current mag heading. If the course
pointer and the mag heading are the same, the course datum
is 0.0 VDC. As the course pointer moves right of center, the
voltage increases at 210 mVDC / degree. As the course
pointer moves left of center, the voltage decreases at 210
mVDC / degree. The voltage limits at ± 60 degrees. This
emulates the Bendix-King KCS-55(A) heading system.
Nav – PFD P733-24 S55X P551-30 The PFD transmits a DC analog signal to the autopilot that
CDI Analog Out 5 L-R +RT represents a course deviation. The input at the autopilot is
differential and the PFD transmits the course deviation on
PFD P733-23 S55X P551-31 the + side and connects signal ground on the – side. Full
Analog Gnd L-R +LT scale deflection is ± 150 mVDC where positive means the
needle is right of center as measured from the + signal to the
– signal. The course deviation is 1.0 degree per 15 mVDC so
full scale deflection at 150 mVDC is 10 degree error.
Nav - CDI PFD P733-24 S55X P551-30 The PFD transmits the same DC analog signal for localizer
Analog Out 5 L-R +RT deviation as it does for VOR course deviation. The autopilot
interprets the CDI needle the same way as with the VOR
PFD P733-23 S55X P551-31 source except with higher gain settings. Localizer deviation is
Analog Gnd L-R +LT measured in DDM or Difference in Depth of Modulation
which is the relative signal strengths of the 90 Hz modulation
left lobe and 150 Hz modulation right lobe. +0.155 DDM is
full scale deflection right of center and –0.155 DDM is full
scale deflection left of center.
Nav – CDI Flag PFD P732-17 S55X P551-13 The PFD transmits a discrete level DC signal to the autopilot
Discrete Out 0 Nav Flag + that represents validity of CDI. The discrete must be greater
than 200 mVDC for the autopilot to interpret the CDI as valid
PFD P732-16 S55X P551-14 for navigational use. A ground on this signal means the CDI
Gnd Nav Flag - is not valid. These states come from electromechanical
indicators where a voltage was necessary to pull the flag out
of view. The PFD actually transmits a signal that is either
near +5VDC or ground.

Nav – ILS Active PFD P732-56 S55X P551-32 The Loc Active signal is an open collector discrete output
Discrete Out 2 Loc Switch from the PFD to the autopilot. When grounded, it indicates
that the CDI is a localizer and causes the autopilot to use
high gain settings for closer and more aggressive course
tracking. When high impedance, it indicates that the CDI is a
VOR and causes the autopilot to use lower gain settings.
Approach – G/S PFD P733-9 S55X P552-18 The PFD transmits a DC analog signal for vertical deviation.
Analog Out 4 G/S +UP Glideslope deviation is measured in DDM or Difference in
Depth of Modulation which is the relative signal strengths of
PFD P733-37 S55X P552-19 the 90 Hz modulation top lobe and 150 Hz modulation
Analog Gnd G/S +DN bottom lobe. +0.175 DDM is full scale deflection above
center and –0.175 DDM is full scale below center.
Approach – G/S PFD P732-37 S55X P552-1 The PFD transmits a discrete level DC signal to the autopilot
Flag Discrete Out 1 G/S Flag + that represents validity of G/S. The discrete must be greater
than 200 mVDC for the autopilot to interpret the G/S as valid
PFD P732-36 S55X P552-2 for navigational use. A ground on this signal means the G/S
Gnd G/S Flag - is not valid. These states come from electromechanical
indicators where a voltage was necessary to pull the flag out
of view. The PFD actually transmits a signal that is either
near +5VDC or ground.
Altitude Hold – Alt PFD P732-76 S55X P552-20 The PFD normally holds this signal at ground. When the PFD
Engage Discrete Out 3 Alt engage wants to tell the autopilot to hold current altitude, it pulses the
signal high. The discrete output is an open collector type but
a pullup to +5VDC in the autopilot biases it during the OC
high impedance.
The pulse width is approximately 1 second to allow
monitoring with a voltmeter. The minimum and maximum
pulse width allowable by the autopilot is not known.
Vertical Speed – PFD P733-42 S55X P552-22 The PFD remotely commands a vertical rate to the autopilot
VS Cmd Analog Out 0 VS Signal with the DC analog VS Cmd signal. VS Cmd is centered on
+5VDC indicating 0 fpm. VS Cmd increases 130 mV for each
100 fpm increase in vertical speed commanded up to a limit
of 1600 fpm. VS Cmd decreases 130 mV for each 100 fpm
decrease in vertical speed commanded down to a limit of –
1600 fpm.
Remote ASA – Alt PFD P732-18 S55X P552-21 The PFD acts as a remote STEC altitude selector alerter
Sel Ctrl Discrete Out 4 Alt Sel Ctl (ASA) and indicates to the autopilot that a remote ASA has
control of vertical speed and altitude capture by holding this
discrete signal low. The discrete output is an open collector
type but a pullup to +5VDC in the autopilot biases it during
the OC high impedance state.
GPSS PFD P732-32 S55X P552-36 PFD transmits messages 100G, 121, 320. Autopilot listens to

Nav – ILS Active PFD #1 P732-56 1500 P1-23 The Loc Active signal is an open collector discrete output
Discrete Out 2 Loc Switch from the PFD to the autopilot. When grounded, it indicates
that the CDI is a localizer and causes the autopilot to use
high gain settings for closer and more aggressive course
tracking. When high impedance, it indicates that the CDI
is a VOR and causes the autopilot to use lower gain
settings.
Approach – G/S PFD #1 P733-9 1500 P1-42 The PFD transmits a DC analog signal for vertical
Analog Out 4 G/S +UP deviation. Glideslope deviation is measured in DDM or
Difference in Depth of Modulation which is the relative
PFD #1 P733-37 1500 P1-1 signal strengths of the 90 Hz modulation top lobe and 150
Analog Gnd G/S +DN Hz modulation bottom lobe. +0.175 DDM is full scale
deflection above center and –0.175 DDM is full scale
below center.
Approach – G/S PFD #1 P732-37 1500 P1-41 The PFD transmits a discrete level DC signal to the
Flag Discrete Out 1 G/S Flag + autopilot that represents validity of G/S. The discrete must
be greater than 200 mVDC for the autopilot to interpret
PFD #1 P732-36 1500 P1-40 the G/S as valid for navigational use. A ground on this
Gnd G/S Flag - signal means the G/S is not valid. These states come
from electromechanical indicators where a voltage was
necessary to pull the flag out of view. The PFD actually
transmits a signal that is either near +5VDC or ground.

Heading – PFD #1 P733-26 2100 P1-5 Mag Heading is combined with Heading Bug to create
Heading Bug DC HDG HI Heading Datum.
Analog Out 2
2100 P1-7 Heading datum to the autopilot is the difference between
PFD #1 P733-27 HDG RTN the Heading Bug and current mag heading. If the Heading
Analog Gnd Bug and mag heading are the same, the heading datum is
0.0 VDC. As the Heading Bug moves right of center, the
voltage increases at 550 mVDC / degree. As the Heading
Bug moves left of center, the voltage decreases at 550
mVDC. The voltage limits at ± 25 degrees. This emulates
the Bendix-King KCS-55(A) heading system.
Nav – PFD #1 P733-40 2100 P1-11 Mag Heading is combined with Course Pointer to create
Course Pointer Analog Out 3 DC CRS HI Course Datum.

PFD #1 P733-41 2100 P1-12 Course datum to the autopilot is the difference between
Analog Gnd CRS RTN the course pointer and current mag heading. If the course
pointer and the mag heading are the same, the course
datum is 0.0 VDC. As the course pointer moves right of
center, the voltage increases at 210 mVDC / degree. As
the course pointer moves left of center, the voltage
decreases at 210 mVDC / degree. The voltage limits at
±60 degrees. This emulates the Bendix-King KCS-55(A)
heading system.
Nav – PFD #1 P733-24 S55X P551-30 The PFD transmits a DC analog signal to the autopilot
CDI Analog Out 5 L-R +RT that represents a course deviation. The input at the
autopilot is differential and the PFD transmits the course
PFD #1 P733-23 S55X P551-31 deviation on the + side and connects signal ground on the
Analog Gnd L-R +LT – side. Full scale deflection is ± 150 mVDC where positive
means the needle is right of center as measured from the
+ signal to the – signal. The course deviation is 1.0
degree per 15 mVDC so full scale deflection at 150 mVDC
is 10 degree error.
Nav - CDI PFD #1 P733-24 2100 P1-38 The PFD transmits the same DC analog signal for
Analog Out 5 L-R +RT localizer deviation as it does for VOR course deviation.
The autopilot interprets the CDI needle the same way as
PFD #1 P733-23 2100 P1-39 with the VOR source except with higher gain settings.
Analog Gnd L-R +LT Localizer deviation is measured in DDM or Difference in
Depth of Modulation which is the relative signal strengths
of the 90 Hz modulation left lobe and 150 Hz modulation
right lobe. +0.155 DDM is full scale deflection right of
center and –0.155 DDM is full scale deflection left of
center.
Nav – CDI Flag PFD #1 P732-17 2100 P1-37 The PFD transmits a discrete level DC signal to the
Discrete Out 0 Nav Flag + autopilot that represents validity of CDI. The discrete must
be greater than 200 mVDC for the autopilot to interpret
PFD #1 P732-16 2100 P1-36 the CDI as valid for navigational use. A ground on this
Gnd Nav Flag - signal means the CDI is not valid. These states come
from electromechanical indicators where a voltage was
necessary to pull the flag out of view. The PFD actually
transmits a signal that is either near +5VDC or ground.

Appendix O: Intelliflight 2100 Interface Information

O.1 User Interface
Autopilot annunciations and trim status will be received over ARINC 429 and displayed across the top
of the PFD. The approximate locations and colors are shown in Table 28. Stacked messages indicate
that they occupy the same locations on screen.

The annunciators are broken down into six groups, placed left to right across the PFD. Active modes
display in green text. Failure states display in amber. Armed modes are shown in white. When a
failure condition is set for any of the active or armed modes, the mode annunciator will be displayed in
amber, and will alternate at 1 Hz with the FAIL annunciator. For example, if the backcourse mode is
failing, it will flash “REV” - “FAIL” - “REV” - “FAIL” … until the failure condition is cleared.

O.2 Annunciator Logic

Mode and trim annunciations are transmitted using the following, S-TEC-specific labels.

● 273—AP Armed Mode

● 274—AP Pitch Mode
● 275—AP Roll Mode
● 300—Flight Control System Status
Annunciators are illuminated when a particular bit or set of bits are true in the annunciator ARINC
labels. Other than looking at the bits, the PFD does not perform any additional logic to check for
overlapping annunciators. The autopilot has the responsibility to send only the appropriate
annunciators at any given time.

The bit numbers and their associated values for each label are listed. For example, in the first row, AP
INIT is activated by setting Bits 20 and 21 to zero in Label 300.

All active mode annunciations are green. Armed mode annunciations are white. All other
annunciations are green, except in a failure condition, when the annunciations become amber and
alternate with the “FAIL” annunciation.

O.3 Failure Modes

Three different failure conditions are possible with the 429 link from the autopilot to the PFD. These
conditions will be handled in the same way in which the PFD has previously handled similar failure
conditions with the 55X autopilot.

“AP Fail” Bits set

As described in O.2 Annunciator Logic, on page 75, if bit 20 = 1 and bit 21 = 0 in label 300, the “AP
FAIL” annunciator will display, as shown below.

Invalid SSM Bits

In the event that the SSM bits of any of the four annunciator labels are not Normal Operation (both bits
set to zero), all of the annunciators will be replaced with yellow dashes across the top of the ADI. In
this case, it is clear that a problem with the annunciators exists, but the textual annunciation is unclear.

Arinc 429 Data Stream Timeout

The ARINC 429 data stream may time out for several reasons. The autopilot may be powered off, the
autopilot may be transmitting garbage data, one or both of the two 429 wires may be disconnected. In
this case, it is unknown if there is a problem with the autopilot, the connection, or if it is simply powered
off. The PFD reacts by simply not displaying any annunciator or flight director data as well as reverting
all the bugs to PFD, uncoupled control.
