Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks: Communication Architecture

Underwater missions for monitoring are highly expensive due to the fact that the devices

required for such expeditions have a very high cost. A large number of autonomous vehicles

are used for enhancing the performance of such expeditions. The communication architecture

for the underwater acoustic sensor networks can be classified into the following three types:

 Static Two Dimensional: Static two dimensional under water acoustic network are

most commonly used for the monitoring the beds of oceans. Such networks are

constituted of nodes that are placed in the ocean beds for signal transmission. Some of

the major applications of static two dimensional under water acoustic networks are the

monitoring of the underwater environment and the plates that are present in the

tectonics.

 Static Three Dimensional: Static three dimensional under water acoustic network are

most commonly used for the monitoring the columns of oceans. Such networks are

constituted of networks whose depth can be controlled and adjusted according to the

requirements. Some of the major applications of static three dimensional under water

acoustic networks are the surveillance of the underwater environment and monitoring

the various ocean phenomena including underwater pollution, bio and geo chemical

processes taking place under water, etc.

 Three Dimensional Networks: Three dimensional networks usually comprise of

underwater vehicles that are autonomous in nature. The basic characteristic of such

networks is this that are a mixture of fixed sensors hat are anchored and mobile

sensors that act as autonomous vehicles. There main advantage is that they don’t

require any types of wires or cables or remote controls to function properly.
