About the French Egyptian Start Up Competition

On November 6th, 2019, His Excellency the Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt,
M. Tarek Amer, His Excellency the Minister of Communication and Information
Technology, Dr. Amr Talaat, and His Excellency the French Ambassador to the Arab
Republic of Egypt, M. Stéphane Romatet, have officially launched the first
French-Egyptian Start-ups Competition in presence of more than 300 participants.

Resulting from a common will of France and Egypt to strengthen their bilateral ties
in the field of innovation and entrepreneurship, this competition follows the
signature, during the visit of the French Republic President, M. Emmanuel Macron, in
Egypt in January 2019, of a declaration of intent aiming at strengthening entrepre-
neurship and foster digital startup growth.

This competition aimed to identity Egyptian startups with a high potential for growth
having the ambition to become the next leaders of the digital transformation in three
priority sectors of cooperation between France and Egypt: Health, Fintech and
Sustainable Cities. This competition was made possible by the support of more than
15 French companies among which Axa, Crédit Agricole, Orange, Schneider Electric,
Danone, Sanofi and Valeo, having extensive experience in these three sectors.
The Competition suspended its activities at the start of the pandemic. However, a
closed contact was kept with the finalists during these exceptional circumstances.
The Competition resumed part of its activities over the summer during a “Virtual
Bootcamp” where finalists received training and coaching in several fields related to
innovation & entrepreneurship, with the support of the Competition partners.

About the French Egyptian Start Up Competition

In the end, the competition was a great success with more than 150 Egyptian entrepreneurs submitting an application. A two-round
selection made it possible to distinguish six winners running in one of the three categories opened to the Competition:

• “Health“ Category Winners: 3Elagi Tech (first prize) and Bypa-ss (second prize).
• “Fintech“ Category Winners: El Gameya (first prize) and Ocra Wallet (second prize).
• “Sustainable Cities“ Category Winners: Transport for Cairo (first prize) and Hood (second prize).

In addition, two special prizes were awarded to additional startups. A “Coup de Coeur” prize was extended on behalf of the French
Business Community in Egypt to NanoEbers. A “Community Award” resulting partly from the public vote through the Egyptinnovate
plateform was also extended.

The competition ended in February 2021 during a ceremony held at the Residence of the French Ambassador where eight Egyptian
startups graduated from the first edition of the French Egyptian Start-ups Competition. In addition to sharing a prize of a total amount
of 800,000 EGP, numerous business acceleration support are yet to be provided by partners and sponsors of the Competition.

I am extremely honored and proud to have witnessed the first edition of the
French Egyptian Start Up Competition. This initiative is a direct outcome of
President Macron’s last official visit to Egypt in January 2019. It enables us to
step into a new era of cooperation in the fields of innovation and entrepreneur-
ship that are more than ever before crucial to foster sustainable economic
growth.
I believe the Egyptian entrepreneurial ecosystem has a lot to offer. We met with
bright, dedicated and agile young entrepreneurs who showed us their determi-
nation to make a difference. I am particularly confident in their capacity to reach
a new level of maturity especially as they tackle pressing challenges of our daily
life: access to finance, health and living in sustainable cities. I wish that our
winners could take the best of what we aimed to offer them: mentorship &
training, access to market and international exposure.

I am truly grateful to the French Business Community who extended its generous support to the initiative. Our companies are operating in
Egypt in a wide range of sectors creating value and jobs while extending their vast knowledge and advanced technologies to the country.
I know that they will greatly benefit from this unique experience. I encourage them to keep on supporting Egypt and its youth.

A journey of hard work, dedication and perseverance that really deserves to be


documented; the French Egyptian Start-up Competition has come to its final
step despite the challenges it faced. Partners from Egypt and France have
successfully paved the way for a new generation of entrepreneurs to innovate
and address vital challenges facing our societies today.
This nationwide competition was made possible with the strong collaboration
between both countries’ governments and private sector, availing digital technol-
ogies, and fortunately being part of Egypt’s vibrant startup ecosystem.
Uniquely, Egypt is home to the region’s largest startup ecosystem. Such environ-
ment has helped many entrepreneurs bring their creations from concept to
market; and are competing today on the ever-evolving global digital scene.

As a government, we are creating an enabling environment for innovators and startups to flourish and grow. From legislation, to
capacity building, to strong technical and financial backing; we strongly believe in supporting progressive digital endeavors and acknowl-
edge their value for our economy. Building on this potential, MCIT has pledged that competent startups will actively engage in
implementing projects of the country’s digital transformation program, known as “Digital Egypt”.
The Ministry is committed to hone digital skills and competencies of our entrepreneurs to meet Egypt’s growing need for technology
innovation and its applications; and also, be part of the digital global workforce.

By now the world has come to accept that technology is on the verge of becom-
ing the ultimate enabler for financial services and progressively resulting in a
more efficient and innovative way of doing finance. Given the evolution of
FinTech, innovation, and digital financial services (DFS) as well as, the focus on
MSMEs, entrepreneurship, and Inclusive green finance, Central Bank of Egypt

strategy in 2019 with a vision “to become a globally recognized FinTech hub in
the Arab world & Africa, home to next-generation financial services, talent, and
innovative development.“
Thus, the French-Egyptian Startup Competition comes within the framework of CBE’s endeavor to strengthen the bilateral cooperation
between Egypt and France in the startups field and more specifically, in FinTech and Innovation. Within that context, it is with joy that the
competition has received a pleasant number of promising FinTech startups providing innovative solutions in the different fields of Remit-
tance, Payments, RegTech, ROSCA, Personal Finance Management and many more, with an aspiration to provide international exposure
to Egyptian Young talents.
Looking ahead, continued regulatory developments and support is on the top of Central Bank of Egypt’s agenda to ensure a sustainable
development of the FinTech ecosystem, supported by strategic enablers such as, but not limited to enhancement in; digital financial
infrastructure, FinTech talents and entrepreneurship, legal and regulatory foundations, cybersecurity and fostering FinTech investments to

Flat6Labs Cairo fosters and invests in bright and passionate Egyptian entrepreneurs with cutting-edge ideas.
Launched in 2011 as the first Flat6Labs office in the MENA region Flat6Labs Cairo supports and encourages
entrepreneurs throughout the critical first steps of development. Each cycle we select 8-10 promising teams to
join our Flat6Labs Cairo program. Once selected we put these teams on the right track to become a full-fledged
scalable startup. We provide each team with cash funding (EGP 500,000 – EGP 750,000 ) and select startups
with follow-on funding (up to EGP2m) strategic mentorship office-space a multitude of perks and services from
our various partners ($300,000+) and entrepreneurship-focused business training and workshops.

The French Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Egypt (CCIFE) is proud to be partner of the “Start-up” Competi-
tion, an opportunity to promote young promising entrepreneurs, an excellent way for a Start-up to be known,

CCIFE was created in 1992 with the main purpose of developing commercial and economic cooperation between
Egypt and France. A member of French Chambers of Commerce network worldwide (126 Chambers in 95
countries), it organizes events and allows its 730 members to integrate a network of companies to exchange
commercial information and benefit from the Chamber’s, expertise and contacts at all levels through: Business
Development Department, Sectorial Committees, Events, Employment Fair, Schengen Visa, “Privileges” Program,
Publications, Translations, etc.

4,500 businesswomen and men and experts in the international domain promoting France’s development for
more than 120 years. Present in every region of France and in more than 150 countries, including Egypt with a
group of 30 CCEs.
The “Conseillers du Commerce Extérieur de la France” (French Foreign Trade Advisors or CCEs) voluntarily share
their experience working for the development of France. They carry out concrete actions on a daily basis in
partnership with public and private players who have a role in promoting and supporting the internationalisation
of French companies. Appointed by the Prime Minister, CCEs are vested with four missions by public authorities:
Advising Public Authorities, Supporting Business, Training Young People for International Stage, Promoting the
Attractiveness of France.
