Introduction

The depth and temporal pattern of rainfall at specific gauge can be determined by using 3
common types of method. Those methods are Simple mean, Thiessen Polygon, and Isohyetal
but each method has different accuracies and procedures. In this question, some data at gauge
7299 and 7281 are not provided thus Isohyetal and Thiessen methods are applicable for
question 1 and 2 because of its accuracies of the data.

Question 1 : The Depth of rainfall at gauge number 7283

Objectives
The isohyetal method is used to estimate the mean precipitation across an area by drawing
lines of equal precipitation. The method uses topographic and other data to yield reliable
estimates on which a line joining points of equal rainfall magnitude are used to estimate the
rainfall depth. Isohyets are contours of equal precipitation analogous to contour lines on a
topographic map. In the isohyetal method, precipitation values are plotted at their respective
stations on a suitable base map, and isohyets are drawn to create an isohyetal map. Isohyetal
lines are based on interpolation between rain gauge stations. While constructing isohyets, it is
assumed that rainfall between two stations varies linearly, unless abrupt changes in
topography indicate otherwise.

Procedures and Results

These are the following procedures to estimate the depth of rainfall at gauge 7283:
- Sum the data of each individual gauge based on the results given and it will shows the
rainfall depth of each gauge

- Draw isohyets or contour map by proportioning the depth between adjacent gauges
according to differences in catchment

3
- The depth of the rainfall recorded at gauge 7283 can be estimated by using the closest
gauge (7285, 7269, 7261, 7267). To sum up, the approximate depth of rainfall at
gauge 7283 is 32.7 mm (± 0.05)

Question 2 : Temporal Pattern of rainfall at gauge number 7283

Objectives
Thiessen Polygon is a method of assigning a real significance to point rainfall values where
perpendicular bisectors are constructed to the lines joining each measuring station with those
immediately surrounding it. The bisectors form a series of polygons, each polygon containing
one station. The value of precipitation measured at a station is assigned to the whole area
covered by the enclosing polygon. This method is used to determine a weighted average
rainfall depth where in this case, the catchment is sectioned into regions and each region is
allocated to the rainfall at that gauge within polygons. The weight resulted to the rainfall is
based on ratio of catchment given to that gauge.

Procedures and Results

- Triangulate between adjacent gauges
- Draw perpendicular bisectors between gauges
- Keep extending the bisector until it intercept other bisector and forming polygon

4
Gauge 7283 lays on the line that divides polygons 7269 and 7285. Thus, gauge 7283 has the
same value of rainfall rate and distribution as gauges 7269 and 7285.
