Detailed analysis on M20  = 1:1.5:3 (Ratio)

As we know that  during concreting when we place wet concrete , it gets harden after
certain standard time( 30 mins IST & 10hrs FST), considering same it had be decided
upon by Civil design Engineers to take a factor of safety ranging from 1.54 to 1.57 to
counter that shrinkage.

i.e volume of dry Concrete = 1.54 to 1.57 times Volume of wet concrete.

3/31/2021 how we calculate of Sand, cement and aggregate of M20 ratio or other ratio?
Now calculations is as follows for 1cum(assumed) of Concrete work

ratio Sum = 1+1.5+3=5.5

Shrinkage or safety Factor =1.57 (you can take 1.54 also)

So Total volume of wet concrete required is :- 1.57cum

Volume of broken stone Require = (3/5.5) x 1.57 = 0.856 m3

Volume of sand Require = (1.5/5.5) x 1.57 = 0.471 m3

Volume of cement = (1/5.5) x 1.57 = 0.285 m3

= 0.285 x1440 = 411 kg

For 1m3 of M20 (1:1.5:3)

Broken stone = 0.856 m3

Sand = 0.472 m3

Cement = 8.22 bag.

Some important conclusion from above

8 bag of Cement is required for 1cum of concrete work in M20.

4.4 bag of cement is required for 1cum of concrete work in M10.

volume of dry concrete =1.54 times volume of wet concrete.

Thank You Folks!

observation based on slump test frist we have to check for wokability and then water
cement ratio.it is also a codal provision IS-456 for the nominal mix design.the ratio of
cement sand and agregates depends upon grade of concrete.basically it is a test result

Dear Sanjeev Kumar,

Its good to see your queries.

M20 (1 cement :1.5 sand :3 stone/brick aggregate). To determine the proportions you
have to perform mix design, for this you have to nd out the sp.gr. of cement, CA, FA, and
water cement ratio, type of exposure, Maximum size of aggregate etc. Once the W/C
ratio is determined use 186 kg water (for 20mm CA) to nd out the qty. of cement per
cum of concrete. Then determine the qty. of FA and CA with the help of formula given in
IS:10262-1982, and then divide all the ingredients by cement, then you will get the
proportion similar to you mentioned which are in kg.Or you can follow IS:10262 -2009,
where the calculations are easier.

Further queries do contact me.

mr sanjeev this is just a guess,

but, i think Mr. Usama Metwly has taken a rough value of 1.57 as total volume of
ingredient.

that is if the Total volume ingredients is 1.57 then if you calculate u'll get Broken stone =
0.856 m3, Sand = 0.472 m3, Cement = 8.22 bag as answer.

instead if we assume or have: Total volume ingredients for using as 2.36 (varies), [this is
when you know the overall amount of materials you have].

Volume of broken stone Require = (3/5.5) x 2.36 = 12.8 m3

Volume of sand Require = (1.5/5.5) x 2.36 = 0.64 m3

Volume of cement = (1/5.5) x 2.36 = 0.42 m3

3/31/2021 how we calculate of Sand, cement and aggregate of M20 ratio or other ratio?
= 0.42 x1440 = 604.8 kg

For 1m3 of M20 (1:1.5:3)

Broken stone = 1.28 m3

Sand = 0.64 m3

Cement = 12.09 bags (where 1 bag is 50 Kg)

This method is not used now a days. the above method is called volume batching. if you
take by weight, it is known as weigh batching.

But presently, the ratio is decided after having detailed testing on the aggregates and
cement. You can go through the reference of Ambuja Cement booklets on concrete

In my view, referred from randwalla, we have to use a thumb rule of 2/3 x ((1x0.035)+
(1.5x0.035)+(3x0.035)) = 0.128 cubic meters of concrete.

now we can use absolute volume of cement = ((0.50)/((3.15x 10)) = 0.0158 cubic meter,
where 0.50kN is weight of one cement bag, 3.15 speci c gravity of cement and 10 unit
weight of water..

like wise calculate for reaming materials....of ne, coares and water....

Different grades of concrete has different proportions as follows (Concrete Mix Design) :

CONCRETE MIX DESIGN FOR M20 GRADE CONCRETE:-

Now let us consider M20 grade concrete

M 20 Grade concrete proportion is  = 1 : 1.5 : 3

We have to add all the volume to know the total volume = 1+1.5+3 = 5.5
