QUESTION #1
President Coone is baffled about how digital information from a computer can be sent over
a telephone line. Prepare a brief position paper for management explaining the way
information is transferred from one computer to another over telephone lines. Keep it
simple. Be sure to describe the types of modems used in data transmission over telephone
circuits. Include comments on the role of data compression in increasing transmission
rates. Justify the observation that as a general rule, it is best to purchase the fastest modem
your communications lines can support.
Information can be transferred from on computer to another through a telephone line through
datalink layer. The sender and the receiver have to agree on the protocols to be followed,
however. These protocols determine who transits the information, where the information is
transmitted at what time or moment it is to be transmitted.
Data transmission is the sending and receiving data via cables (e.g., telephone lines or fiber
optics) or wireless relay systems. Digital computers use a modem to transform outgoing digital
electronic data; a similar system at the receiving end translates the incoming signal back to the
original electronic data.
There are two methods used to transmit data between digital devices: serial transmission and
parallel transmission. Serial data transmission sends data bits one after another over a single
channel. Parallel data transmission sends multiple data bits at the same time over multiple
channels.
Data compression has important application in the areas of data transmission and data storage.
Compressing data to be stored or transmitted reduces storage and/or communication costs When
the amount of data to be transmitted is reduced, the effect is that of increasing the capacity of the
communication channel.
It is imperatively important to have a faster modem for information transmission due to the
following benefits;
1. More useful in connecting LAN with the internet.
2. Speed depends on the cost.
3. Slow speed when compared to the hub.
4. A limited number of a system can be connected.
5. A modem is most probably widely used in data communication roadway.
6. A modem converts that the digital signal into an analog signal.
QUESTION #2
Compute each office’s number of bits sent per day (origin to destination) on the basis of the
data provided in Figure 3–25. Use 10 bits per character to keep computations simple and
assume all transmissions are error free. Hint: Bits per day = Packages × 750 × 10 × 2

QUESTION # 3
How many minutes will it take for each city’s modem to transmit its invoices? Use the bits
per day calculated in question 2 and assume that the V.34 modems transmit at an average
rate of 28,800 bps.

QUESTION #4
In question 3, you calculated the transmission time in minutes per day, based on a 28,800-
bps modem and 10 bits per character. Now calculate the file transfer time for Atlanta to
transmit all of its invoices to Tampa at the end of the workday. Why is this answer
different from the time calculated for Atlanta in question 3?
450 X 750 X 1 X 2 =6,750,000
(6,750,000/28,000)/60
=3.91
This IS The transmission from Atlanta to Tampa
QUESTION 5
Could all the NDAS offices transmit their invoices to Tampa between 5:00 P.M. and 6:00
P.M. each evening? How would they achieve this goal?
 Yes, since it takes only 27.69 minutes to transmit/receive all the invoices it is possible.
This is possible because 5:00-6:00 is one hour, which is long enough time.
