Toba Lake Legend
The story tells about the origin of Toba lake. It happened in a village in north
Sumatera. The characters are Toba, Toba’s wife, and Samosir. The problem starts
because Samosir ate Toba’s food. Then, Toba mad and accidentally reveal that his wife
is a fish. Then, Toba’s wife disappointed at Toba and disappeared with Samosir. Soon
there were springs that caused a vast lake. The Moral message is Be a patient person
who can control emotions. And also, do not break a promise that we have made or say.
Prambanan Temple Legend
The story tells about the origin of Prambanan temple. The legend happened in
Prambanan village when Hindu Buddhist era. The characters are Roro jonggrang and
Bandung Bondowoso. In the story, Bondowoso knew that Roro Jonggrang tricked him
and turned her into a temple.
Moral message : Don't cheat, because it will do harm to themselves.
A Crying Stone
The story tells about a girl that turned into a crying stone because her terrible
behavior towards her mother. It happened in a hill in area of Borneo long time ago. The
characters are a poor widow and her daughter. When some young men asked the girl
about her mother was her mother and she arrogantly replied that her mother was her
maid. The widow’s heart hurts because of her daughter’s answer and prayed to God to
punish her ungodly daughter. Then, her daughter slowly turned into crying stone.
Moral message : Parents are the best gift that God has given us, and we must love and
respect them no matter what.
Tangkuban Perahu
The Legend of Sangkuriang tale tells a story of the young Sangkuriang’s effort to
win the heart of Dayang Sumbi, a charming woman who, surprisingly, is his own
mother.
Place : A land of Parahyangan, West Java.
Character :
 Dayang sumbi : Beautiful and kind
  Sangkuriang
 Tumang (dog; sangkuriang’s father)
Orientation : There lived a beautiful princess named Dayang Sumbi. Because of
her oath, she had to marry a dog named Tumang. Dayang Sumbi with her dog
lived happily and blessed with a boy, Sangkuriang.
Complication : Dayang Sumbi recognized a scar on his Sangkuriang’s
head.  She knew that Sangkuriang was his son.  It was impossible for them to
marry. Then he started building the boat.  It was almost dawn when he nearly
finished it. Then Dayang Sumbi made lights in the east, It makes the spirits that
helping Sangkuriang left.
Resolution : Sangkuriang failed to build the dam and boat. He was angry and
kicked that boat.
1. Why did the story exists?
Because shape of Tangkuban Perahu mountain is looks like a boat. That’s why
this legend spreads and many people believe the story.
2. Moral message : Never lie to anyone, especially to your parents.
