Last sunday, there was Thomas cup badminton championship between Indonesia and China. It
was held on Istora Gelora Bung Karno. I went to Istora Gelora Bung Karno with my Brother,
Andi.
Before entering Istora Gelora Bung Karno, we looked at the bus that took Indonesian badminton
team players. I saw taufik Hidayat, Muhammad Ahsan, Hendra Setiawan, Hayom Rumbaka,
Angga Pratama, Rian Agung, Simon Santoso, Sony Dwi Kuncoro and the other Indonesian
badminton players in that bus. They were very handsome. Then, we followed that bus to main-
entrance. I found that Taufik Hidayat left from the bus. When I wanted to get close to Taufik
Hidayat, a security guard held me backI thought that security guard was familiar because He was
my old friend when I was senior high school, he was Andre. After that, he let me in, finally i
could meet Taufik Hidayat and got his signature.
Then, I went back to my seat at the Istora stadium to support Indonesian team. The supporters
were very crowded. They shouted “IN-DO-NE-SI-A” during the match.

There are at least three categories of students who experience difficulties of using English
for academic purpose. Firstly, these are the students who cannot translate words or terms into
their own vernacular, perhaps because their English language vocabulary size or their skilled
capacity of using the language is scanty. The students may actually have concepts involved in
what they are studying but cannot connect these with the new terms spoken or written in English.
For example, an Indonesia student who has already known the psychological concept ‘self
esteem’ may not comprehend the texts.
Secondly, it is likely that there are a group of students who can translate words or terms into
their native language but cannot see the relevance of the terms, because they do not have related
concept which enable them to construct elaborate meaning. For example, students studying
mathematics may know the meaning of generally in daily conversation as true in some
circumstance but cannot perceive it as a mathematical that means true in all circumstances. With
respect to this, it is obvious that the student’s ability of translating or finding meaning will not
guarantee understanding a paragraph if their command of background knowledge of the topic
which is written in that paragraph.
Thirdly, there likely to be some students who have appropriate discrete conceptual knowledge
but who are not able to form appropriate connections between concepts. The students may really
have desirable conceptual language pertinent to the topic being learnt but in the form of distinct
or separate parts. Unfortunately, the students are not sufficiently capable of associating the
concepts owing to very limited command of academic language processing and capabilities in
other reasoning. In other words, they are not able to para-phrase, analyze, summarize, and draw
inferences to build a new critical and logical synthesis.
