There are at least three categories of students who experience difficulties of using English
for academic purpose. Firstly, these are the students who cannot translate words or terms into
their own vernacular, perhaps because their English language vocabulary size or their skilled
capacity of using the language is scanty. The students may actually have concepts involved in
what they are studying but cannot connect these with the new terms spoken or written in English.
For example, an Indonesia student who has already known the psychological concept ‘self
esteem’ may not comprehend the texts.
Secondly, it is likely that there are a group of students who can translate words or terms into
their native language but cannot see the relevance of the terms, because they do not have related
concept which enable them to construct elaborate meaning. For example, students studying
mathematics may know the meaning of generally in daily conversation as true in some
circumstance but cannot perceive it as a mathematical that means true in all circumstances. With
respect to this, it is obvious that the student’s ability of translating or finding meaning will not
guarantee understanding a paragraph if their command of background knowledge of the topic
which is written in that paragraph.
Thirdly, there likely to be some students who have appropriate discrete conceptual knowledge
but who are not able to form appropriate connections between concepts. The students may really
have desirable conceptual language pertinent to the topic being learnt but in the form of distinct
or separate parts. Unfortunately, the students are not sufficiently capable of associating the
concepts owing to very limited command of academic language processing and capabilities in
other reasoning. In other words, they are not able to para-phrase, analyze, summarize, and draw
inferences to build a new critical and logical synthesis.
26. What does this passage mainly discuss?
A. The difficulties of language use encountered by overseas students.
B. The difficulties of reading texts encountered by overseas students.
C. The difficulties of learning English faced by students.
D. The difficulties of learning ‘self-esteem’ faced by overseas students.
E. The difficulties of comprehending texts in conceptual knowledge.
27. What problem faced by the first category of students?
A. A difficulty of translating words into Indonesian.
B. A difficulty of translating words and terms into English.
C. A difficulty of translating Indonesian into English.
D. A difficulty of translating their language into any other language.
E. A difficulty of translating words and terms into their own language.

28. “…….. their skilled capacity of scanty. using the language is.” (Paragraph 1)
The closest meaning of the underlined word is …..
A. nothing D. plentiful
B. efficient E. sufficient
C. very limited

29. What is the purpose of the text?

A. To inform the readers about English study generally
B. To tell the readers about one’s experience
C. To inform readers about some difficulties faced by students in learning English
D. To tell the readers some past events
E. To let the readers know the steps of learning English

How Wind Explodes a House

There is a kind of wind that can make a house explode. Not a whispering kind of wind that
tugs a kite into the sky, or a puffing kind of wind that billows your shirt, but a bowling, whirling
kind of wind called a tornado.
With a noise likes a roar of a thousand lions, a tornado screams over a house. Swoosh!!
Suddenly, all the air around the house is gone … sucked away by the whirling wind. Boom!
Air inside the house bursts out, and the house explodes like a ballon. The explosion pops out
windows, blow down walls, and tears off the roof. Shattered glass and splinters of walls and roof
whirl away in the wind.

windows, and swirl out the doorways, without blowing the house pieces.
