PERSONAL STATEMENT

To whom it may concern,

Earlier on, I have made some digging on the internet in the past few weeks with the aim of pursuing a postgraduate
(Master’s) programme in a highly recognized university and subsequently, came across the University of Alberta
website. While deeply browsing through the list of available postgraduate engineering programmes that it offers,
the MEng coursework-based chemical engineering programme caught my attention. After considering its necessary
admission requirements, programme duration length, available January intake as well as the academic merit that I
have previously achieved (during my undergraduate study in Heriot-Watt university), I became certain that my
current academic qualifications are able to meet the necessary entry requirements indicated on the website and
finally decided on choosing the MEng programme. As a fresh university graduate, I am keen to further advance and
deepen my knowledge in chemical engineering through learning in University of Alberta. Apart from the good
teaching services and facilities it offers, coupled with its strong academic history and reputation, the university will
also provide its students with the opportunity to learn under some of their world-renowned faculty members. In
addition to that, the university also has very strong network links with a wide variety of industry sectors, at both
national and international level, including chemical, pharmaceutical, environmental protection, energy and oil &
gas sectors. This will not only provide me with employment opportunities, but also opportunities to hone my
current technical skills for self-development.

After attending the UK-based Heriot-Watt university in 2016, I have finally graduated with first class honours
degree in chemical engineering programme at the top of my class. I was once a one-time recipient of the University
Prize Award for excellent academic performance during my 2017-2018 academic year in Heriot-Watt university. I
have completed various key modules throughout the 4-years of my undergraduate study and performed
exceptionally well in both exams and coursework, as illustrated by the academic merit that I have achieved. I have
also been endowed with scientific and technical knowledge related to chemical engineering and is now an expert in
the use of chemical process simulation software, with hands-on experience in chemical-related design group
projects as well as being a reliable team player with excellent leadership and interpersonal skills. I am also a highly
motivated, self-confident and independent person with good presentation and research skills and is proficient with
Microsoft Office tools (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and other softwares for process design (AutoCAD, UniSim, etc). In
addition to that, I have actively participated in numerous networking events and other useful seminars (notably the
WETEX seminar in UAE last year). I am also currently an active member of several professional organizations (such
as AIChE, IChemE, SPE) and have been involved in many virtual lectures or seminars held by these organizations.

Graduating from this MEng programme will not only build up my employment opportunities, but also expand the
social circle around me. The programme can offer me the benefits of broadening my horizons in the chemical
engineering field and equipping me with useful technical skills to meet the demands of my future employers.
Furthermore, the theoretical knowledge that I gained from this programme can be readily applied in practice to
devise solutions that solve complex engineering problems. Thus, this will transform me into becoming a more
competent engineer as well as a valuable asset to the organization that I will work for. Being a first class honoured
university graduate, combined with the theoretical knowledge and practical experiences that I have gained from
my previous undergraduate study in Heriot-Watt, in addition to my good english writing skills and past academic
achievement record, I am confident that I am fully prepared and well-deserved to join this highly esteemed
university.

Yours sincerely,

Abdul Hannan Bin Abdul Rahman
