Vol. 75 FEBRUARY 1986 No. 2 MUSIC AS AN ASTROLOGICAL REMEDY STROLOGY is the science of planetary vibrations. Vibrations, when they recur less than cight thousand times and more than six- teen in a second, produce sounds which by their exquisite tone, if blended harmoniously, are called music. Music is the science of yibration. According to Hindus, music is Samaveda while astrology is an Upaveda. Thus it will be seen that music and astrology are intimately related to each other. In this article T shall try to show how music can be employed as an astrological remedy. The views propoun- ded in this article are entirely my own. Only a few persons, if indeed any, can be considered as Wholly unsusceptible to the influ- ence of music. But because of its intangible and indelinable properties, the value of this influence, when ednsidered in its aspect of moral guide and character moulder, is usually underrated. Music as an instructor is sui generis and employs a method all its own differ- ing fundamentally from any other method through which intelligence can be imparted to the human understanding. The Hindus held and still hold music in the highest perfection and called it to be the “Science of Sciences, ‘the rich source whence all others spring”. Thu it is not through reflection or ratiocination that the element of music enters our conscious ness, but on the contrary music depends fo its true appreciation upon the suspension 0 these very functions. Evidently there ari centrés in the human constitution that do no require the slow and cumbersome machinery 0 thinking and reasoning to transmit impression into consciousness. A poem ora painting, how ever exalted its character, must be intellectuall understood in order to be thoroughly appreciable while in fistening to music every effort t analyse its technical make-up unfits us at onc to partake of its inner moral sense. Take the composition of Sti Thyagaraje The wonderful conceptions of this master genius, which he ewbodied in musical compos ions, entered his consciousness without an assistance of the intellectual faculty. Th several elements of composition appeared t him before his inner vision as the fitting scen in a moving panorama, presenting detail aft: detail, the one passing out of his consciousne as the other entered, until the whole totali full orbed and rounded out in all its detai emerged from the unknown and the invisible pass in dramatic order before his mind. Th music seems to draw its elements from a sour: far beyond the reach of intellection and carti 182 on a direct communication between the human soul and the universal soul whereas astrology drawing its elements from those far off plane- tary bodies establishes a communication bet ween the macrocosm comprehended by the planetary systems and the microcosm compre- hended by the individual man. The creations ofa musical genius have no patterns in the world of form, but are limitless expressions of otiginal spiritual vision, delivering the intui- tional messages without the distorting medium of ratiocination. According to the ancient sages the seven musical notes (Sa, RigGa, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni) emanated from the five faces of Lord Siva when He performed His great dance. . The whole system of music is evolved from Nada ot sound. Nada has its origin in Akasa which pervades the whole universe. Vibrations of the air acting upon the ear give the idea of Nada ot sound and the vibrations of the sound, harmo- nise with the planets’ motion. The planets of our solar systems can be located on the octaves of music. Muthuswami Dikshitar, one of the greatest exponents of classical music in South India, has given seven different Ragas and seven- different Talas for the seven weekdays. Saurashtra praises the Sun; Asaveri—the Moon; Surati—Mars ; Natakuranji—Mereury ; Atana—Jupiter : Pharoz Venus; and Yadukula Kambhoji—Saturn and the seven main Talas. It is not clear, on what basis he has selected these particular Ragas and Talas for the seven planets, But it has been found that on the particular weekdays the ragas produce greater effect. Planet Musical Note The Sun Sa The Moon Pa Mars Dha Mercury Ri Jupiter Ni Venus Ma Saturn Ga The planets are located on the musical scale according to these inherent predominant elec- tric and magnetic quality and quantity. The above is only a tentative arrangement based on The Astrological Magazine [Vol. 75, No. 2 the information found in some ancient astro- logical books. The following signs are said to preside over the following ragas Ragas Sign Bhairavi Aquarius Bhupala Virgo Bangala Pisces Malava Virgo Sriraga Taurus Vasantha Leo Saranga Sagittarius Panchama Scorpio By implication it means that planets ruling the different Rasis will also have a correspoding attraction towards the appropriate ragas. In the adove schedule Bhairavi is said to be ruled by Saturn. The Bhairavi raga is adapted tothe sublime and is grave in movement. Saturn—though classed as an evil planet— embodies the noble attribute of love and religion. Saturn no doubt gives suffering but gives understanding also. The natives of Saturn are contemplative and serious. The Sri Raga is sung in the dewy season at eve and is charac- teristic of love and mildness. Compare this with the characteristics of Venus. ‘The ragas are marked by a flowing style varied by different sentiments. The vibrations of music are considered miraculous in their power as‘the singer could compel men, animals and even inanimate nature to do his bidding. They have a succession of tones so arranged as to-excite a feeling of the mind. It is held that one, who has the knowledge of the proper use of the voice and can control it at will, can stimu- late the mind to action and awaken the soul till it becomes one with the absolute. Take the horoscope of a man in which the Moon is in conjunction with Saturn, Mars and Rahu. The state of mind of such a person, at the slightest provocation, can better be ima- gined than described. The remedy is to bring him into contact with pleasant music. The musical sounds will obliterate “the evil tendencies of the malefic conjunction. The sound vibrations released—say when a Vina player performs an attractive piece acts on the February 1986) nervous junctions of the person arftd makes him lose his anger. For the normal disposition of an individual each planet must contribute its optimum quota of energy. Sound, heat, light, magnetism, electricity and ether are all different forms of the same energy—and under certain conditions it is possible to transform a lower form of energy into a higher one and vice versa. When there is a conjunction of Saturn, Mars and Rahu with the Moon, there is an excess concentration of evil emergy which is to be tapped out to render the person quite normal. ‘When éertain select tunes are played—the sweet strains of music which are of course adjusted forms of sound vibrations—a kind of energy— have the power to tap the evil planetary energy and act as a remedy. Good or evil nature of the influences indicated by the planets at the time of birth can be altered by requisitioning different kinds of vibration of forces and music, mantras, homas and japas furnish some of the means to achieve the object. Music or mantras or japas can be very efficacious only when the musician, mantragna and the pandit who per- forms the japas has the necessary authority as well as the needed competency. Every thought is 2 vibration and causes an electric vibration in the brain. Similarly music means collective harmonious sound vibrations’ and they cause an electric vibration in the brain and such electric vibrations are nothing but plane tary vibrations. Through the agency of music we are ushered into the sanctuary of divinity and receive the moral ,idea in undefiled purity. Language fails utterly to describe or even to hint at the thrills of silent bliss that pierce our being when we listen to the magic of harmonic sounds. Lifted up by the mighty soul stirring wayes of rhythm we feel as if carried through spheres of love and beauty toward the altar of eternal truth. We become suddenly filled with a sense of exalted morality and sympathy for the forces and powers that make for good, the moral impulses received are of the highest order and furnish an ideal guide for human conduct. [tis true that these exalted notions do not always obtain a permanent seat Must as an Astrological Remedy 133 in our ordinary consciousness but give way to other influences when the music has cleared to rule us with its melodies. But it is falso true that every repetition of subjecting one’s self to such elevating influences traces deeper and more defined channels in the mind until finally .a direction of thought has been established and the tide of pur morai nature has been turned permanently toward the good and the ideal Jupiter is the planet of intellect. Venus (and to some extemt Mercury) is the planet of feeling. ‘When Venus is in the fourth house one will have an ear for music whereas when Jupiter or Mercury is there the native will be intellectual. The influence which music exerts on the animal creation is another evidence of its super-intel- lectual source. Music is an appeal not to the intellectual process, but to the feelings and emotions. Therefore have an eye upon the affliction to Mercury and Venus when prescrib= ing music as a remedy. The stupendous power of sound to move molecules and atoms even in the planetary bodies was recognised by the ancient Hindus. The multitude of kindred traditions such as Krishna causing the cattle to move in accord with the tunes from his flute and Thaygaraja attracting the very person of God by his devo- tional songs and Tansen stopping an elephant runnin’g amock by the power of music seem to. indicate that the ancient Hindus were once in the possession of an insight into the potencies of sound and of power to manipulate them, but. lost these attainments by their needless pursuit of the sensuous and purely material and by their neglect of the intuitional and divine, as it is only through the activity of the latter’ that we can succeed in bringing into play the dormant powers which lie as germs in the mysterious depths of human nature. Sound is a substratum to all the other ele- ments of sensation. The sound—rather its abstract conception—moves in mighty waves through the various places of cosmos ever registering the course and character of the monodic movements. To our physical ear this “sound”, however is ideal silence, as its cur- rents sweep through our auditory nerve-centres J384 without conscious appreciation by the latter. Through disturbance of its homogeneous essence set up by mechanical changes in the medium through which it flows this sound first becomes audible to our hearing apparatus, and from subjectivity passes into objectivity. By striking a series of notes on an appro- priate instrument we succeed in setting up such disturbances in the sound-substratum that its responses address our ears as music. If we admit that sound holds in its bosom the method of monodic unfoldment (the creative, protective and destructive agencies are embedded in the mystic syllable “* OM”) it must be through and by music that we possess an instrumentality by means of which we are able to elicit from ‘Nature an answer to the questions of life and death. Thus by setting up a vibration that could disturb the movement of the life-energy at work in fashioning—Iet us say a flower, the consciousness ensouling that flower would be an element of our knowledge. In other words musical genius sueceeds in arranging such a system of technical agents that the vibrations set up by them may elicit just such revelations of the world-soul as corres- pond to and express his ideal conception. Through his intuition the composer obtains an idea from the Universal Mind, next he feeis a want of imparting this divine message to his fellowmen. The composer by skilfully produc ing a series of mechanical sounds correspond- ing to the character of his spiritual vision, creates a disturbance in the mystic ‘* silence’? and interrupts the current in which his idea floats. Thus interrupted, the idea menifests in terms of tones and melodies and reveals its meaning to listening mortals. To the extent the composer's mind has been pure and holy, to that extent is his composition ethically exalted, as only the morally developed mind is capable of reflecting the moral idea. And this at once leads us to the conclusion that as there is music pure and elevating, so there must likewise be music impure and degrading. Such is the music of Thyagaraja and of others whose creations re-echo in the human heart the infinite har- monies of pure untainted Being. The Astrological Magazine (Vol. 75, No. 2/ Masic therfore like all manifestations of the “* perfect through the imperfect’? has its two poles of expression—its good and evil sides. ‘And being thus exposed to an energy which by its very nature eludes the deliberations of rea- son and reflection the individual finds himself to a large extent at the mercy of his. composer. For through the mighty agency of rhythm the latter can sway the minds of his listeners as completely as a hypnotiser can control his sub- ject. According to the character of the music, so will the person subjected to its influence find the different shades of his moral nature affected. If the composer’s inspirations are of a wholly passional order, the evoked vibrations will affect solely the passional elements of the listener and will arouse their activity in an abnormal degree. A person with Venus afflic- ted in the 7th house should invariably avoid such passionate music. If he does listen to too much of love music, no stimulus is given to the moral elements, the balance of the inner man is disturbed and the mind plunged into a state of moral chaos. Persons who have Saturn in the 4th afflicted, or who have Venus in the 2nd with Mars should listen to more of devotional songs. Otherwise dormant appetites will awaken and clamour for gratification and finally some favourite passion obtaining controi of the victim will hurl him headlong into the ‘commission of deeds which bis nature, left in its ordinary balance, would never have sanc- tioned. As such moral conclusions of the individual mind may seriously retard, the evolution of the soul. It mankind to ayoid all kinds of The music furnished by our theatres and cinemas because of its one-sided _panderings to the nature and growth of some one or the other of one’s passion and appetite, at the expense and starvation of nobler promptings, adds in a baneful measure to the sum-total of human wretchedness. Indian thought and Indian music are destined to play an important part in rescuing our civilisation from self-absorbed materialism and supplying to thousands of lives a moral uplift which will enable society to move onward and upward. and even inhibit important to impure music. February 1986] News ond Views 185 News and Views EKALAVYA and Culture ATELY Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi has been airing his views on Indian culture and its role in our country’s present development. His earlier statements on the subject had been unclear and even disquieting as when he is reported as saying that [ndia’s development in “a few-areas like space and atomié energy have not changed the culture of the people”. One feels on the face of it, it is a case of misreporting in light of his later address to the Congress (1) Parliamentary party at New Delhi on November 21, 1985. He said there categorically : ‘While march- ing towards economic developmsnt, we have to keep in mind our old moral values.”” He added that the new Ministry of Human Resources Development has to see that India’s old values and culture are maintained in our day-to-day life and not just ignored in the name of development. The provocation for this reiteration arose, according to him, as he could see that where no development work had been done, people appeared to be happier than in places which were developed ! The lesson is clear: sub-consciously people were not satisfied with material development alone. In other words, these improvements lack a spiritual and cultural base which alone can satisfy the human psyche. Like the Ratha of Jagannath, India is colos- sal in its proportions, variety, colour and. heritage. The wheels on which it moves are many. Bureaucracy, politics, judiciary and military constitute one wheel; economy, trade and industry another; science and technology the third; religion, philosophy, literature and arts form the fourth, etc. The present incom- bent at the wheels is Rajiv Gandhi. Al- though he has turned the ignition, the car does not take off straight but tends to move zig-zag, as the wheels pull in different directions. The 2 expert mechanic that he is, he has detected that the wheels screech and scream and need citing. That made him take up the three-in- ote car containing culture which is made up of religion, tradition and values which had been the proven moving force behind the vintage car that is India all through the ages. One of the trouble-makers of the Ratha of India is the wheel of science and technology, which is starved of this oil. Like the fabled washerman’s donkey, it does not mind its own business but a /a Peeping Tom, has thought fit, to admonish the wheel of humanities on its so- called ‘superstition’, and Rajiv had no option but to flourish the big stick against the erring beast, thundering “Mind your own work or I shall pull you by the ears!” The latest instance of science’s sniping was provided under government auspices at the Children Film Festival at Bangalore. Ina film on Halley’s Comet, the scientist writer was more keen to ridicule the so-called superstition of our people tham explaining the comet phenomenon. He barked the wrong tree, forgetting all the rishis of. yore were scientists of the highest order in their own times, and they have but recorded their findings on comets during countless gene- rations saying they are portents of evi Have the scientists of today any valid expla~ nation for the recent unexpected calamities the world over, like the repetition of Pompeii at Columbia, and the deluges in India, Latin America and the rest ? Silence, says the poet, is the strength of fools. Why not listen to him, rather than put one’s foot into one’s own mouth ? Rabu and Combustion A correspondent wonders in 4.M., December 1985 whether Rabu admits of combustion as (1) itis a chaya graha and (2) it is Rahu that swallows the Sun and the Moon according to astrological dicta or is it mythology. I shall clear his doubt here. 186 In this discussion, three areas of knowledge are involyed : astronomy, mythology and astro- logy. One has to have a clear notion of where ‘one stops and the other takes over. In astronomy, Rahw and Ketu are, of course. mathematical points in space known as the ascending and descending Nodes, where the Moon's orbit intersects the ecliptic. Now, when planets are ‘occulted’ by the Sun, they are known as asthamana or combustion and when other planets do so among themselves, it is known as samagama or simple occultation proper. Eclipses of the Sun and the Moon occur, by virtue of physical laws only as they transit the above points—Nodes—which, of their nature, are 180° apart. Solar eclipses are caused on new- Moon days by the Moon coming in between the Sun and earth when the Moon’s shadow falls on the Sun and darkens it. Lunar eclipses occur on full-Moon nights when the earth comes between the Sun and the Moon and the earth’s shadow falls on and covers the Moon. Thus it is the Moon or the earth's shadow that does it; there is no demon as such; the points Rahu and Ketu that have no physical entity have little to do with the occultation except allowing the principal dramatis personae to stay in them. ‘Mythology describes this natural phenomenon picturesquely as demon swallowing the lumi- naries, because of their evil effeets, ut are not “occult” in the physical sense. In astrology, Rahu and Ketu are given the de jure status of planets, in spite of their not being physical entities. They are asked to be worshipped, just as other planets for propi- tiation. Now, Parasara, the father of astrology, has prescribed certain patameters for gauging the effects of planets in general. It is thi daar: qi we: guts wea feat: 4 soasaré faanfars a8 qita® 1 He postulates that the effects of a planet are directly proportional to its distance from the Sun; itis greatest when farthest and weakest or malefic when nearest. And w¢ know that The Astrological Magazine [¥ol. 75, No. 2 planets retrograde when farthest from and combust when nearest to the Sun and, that accounts’ for the first being assigned highest strength equal to exaltation, and the second, the poorest strength, if not malefic powers. It is to be noted here, that unlike Neviton’s law, it isthe direct distance alone from the Sun following Bode’s, and not the physical size ‘or behaviour of the planet that is made the criterion of judgement for combustion. Once this truth is understood, there'should be no difficulty in extending the same principle of combustion in full to Rabu and Ketu too inas- much as they enjoy all the rights and privileges of the other seven planets. We are therefore fully justified in allowing de jure combust status for Rahu and Ketu too. Indeed to discsiminate against them for their evanescence is nct only iniquitous and incongruous but unwarranted too. Being of the nature of the Moon, we can allow them the orb of the Moon, viz., 12°, and pass on all the defects owed by other combust planets in the matter of positional and Dasa predictions to them, although classical texts may not have spelt them out in as many words. What astrological texts say is that the proxi- mity of Rahu to planets like the Sun and the ‘Moon vitiates the results. It docs not amount to saying it technically eclipses the luminaries. ‘They say the same of Saturn too which doesn’t mean that Saturn eclipses others. Physical eclipse should not be confused with astrological combustion. Looking at the problem historically, one can see that the notion of Rabu being a super- malefic to the extent of being able to ‘eclipse’ even the Sun owes perhaps to Prithuyasas who in his Horasara avers . apqaTETT: HAscay AageaTOITT: | cnmear’ omit 3 et ar areraraefin i.e., the Dasa of the planet keeping company with Rahu, even though benefic, will yield the results of a malefic, etc. This has created the impression that Rahu is all-powerful. This is obviously an over- statement in the face of more authoritative (Continued on page 248) February 1986] Sctentists and Scientific Temper 187 Scientists and Scientific Temper GAYATR: DEvi VASUDBV, HAD an opportunity of taking part in a discussion meeting “Astronomy and the Scientitic Outlook led by Prof. Jayant V. Narlikar of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bombay, under the auspices of the “Centre for History and Philosophy of Science” at the Indian Institute of World Culture on 3-12-1985. ‘One of the topics he chose for discussion was something about beliefs that had their origins in Astronomy. He took up Astrology as one such belief and proceeded to show it was a belief and nothing more and not a science. His argument was that according to the Greeks, the word planet meant “* wanderer". The Greeks called a planet by this name because it did not seem to have a fixed path as it moved back- wards and forwards in its path round the Sun (probably the astrophysicist was referring to a planet's retrograde and direct motion although he did not make use of these terms). Since it moved in this manner, the Greeks, he said, thought planets had a will of their own. This will, they believed, planets exercised on man and this was the origin of astrology as a belief. Since planets had no will really astrology was not a science. I was surprised that he should be so ill- informed and presumptuous as to feed this cock and bull story to an audience, picked out for intellectual attainments. It was presumptuous, to say the least, that he should also subscribe to the theory of the Greek origin of astrology. When the question hour came I told him that astrology was Hindu in its origin. It was based on the theory that a correlation cxists between the universe within and man without. Ht was not a cause and effect relationship bet- ween man and the universe. Since he was mistaken in the definition of astrology, he could not just dismiss it as of no consequence and as a mere belief with no focus stand’. He gave no answer. There was a microphone B.Sc., LLB. arrangement and he could have answered clearly, audibly if he really had an answer. He did neither, for he had no answer to my ques- tion. It was not surprising because his attitude to astrology was based on ignorance of the sub- ject which is the case with most of the scientific community. While dismissing astrology, he further said that astrologers had charged seientists with coming to a conclusion that astrology was not scientific without ever having made a study of it. He asserted he had details of investigations made on astrology. He said even allowing for a wide margin of error, none of the astrofogi- cal dicta had been proved by scientific studies ! When I asked him where the studies had been conducted and when, whether the results of such studies had been published and who were those who had made such studies, he was vague and evasive. He gave no answer again although he had asserted initially he had all the factual evidence against astrology ready. I think a man of his stature should be more responsible and closer to truth. Lesser folk such as displaced, educationists, rationalists can get emotional, hysterical and talk a lot of nonsense, But it is a serious matter when it comes from an officially designated scientist from a prestigious institution. Another statement this astrophysicist. made was Sanskrit was suited for literature, not science. Grandoisely he conceded that a loka by Aryabhata (he did not quote which or from where it was) had said that the earth moved round the Sun, yet the Sun appeared to rise and set just as aman ina boat sailing in a river saw the trees on the bank moving, He said this was true and correct but Sanskrit was such a versatile language that it could be interpreted in any way. Not one in the audience, which was supposed to be distinguished for its intellec- tual stature, said a word in protest but nodded (Continued on page 247) 188 The Astrologioal Magasine {Vol 75, No.2 Teach Yourself Sanskrit Prof. N. Bhaya Analysis 66PRHAVA analysis is an important item in the day-to-day work of an astrologer. A Bhava is to be studied first before making pre- dictions on Bhava effects. For instance, a client wants to know the probable period when the native will get married. Mantreswara says: Kalaira samastasya kalatra drishter, dasagamavadha kalatra pasya yada vilagnadhi- pati priyati, kalatram tatra kalatralabha. “It means that marriage occurs during the Dasa of the planet posited in the 7th house as- pecting the 7th house or of the lord of the 7th, and when Lagna lord transits the 7th house. But is it not proper for us to see whether the horoscope promises marriage® It is necessary for every prudent astrologer to examine the Bhava first before making predictions.” Reader B. R. shares some thoughts with us ‘on the subject of Bhava. “Bhava analysis thus assumes importance. We have to examine the following as a_scienti- fic analysis : the Bhava, the Bhava lord and the significator. Bhava must be strong “A Bhava is said to be strong when benefic planets are posited in its kendra (angle) and trikona (trine) from it. In addition to this, absence of aspects from malefics is conducive to the Bhava’s prosperity. The Bhava gets des- troyed when malefics are posited in the above positions. Further the Bhava hemmed in bet- ween malefics also is bad. The aspect of the Jord of the sign is said to be very good as per the sloka Yo yo bhavak swami drishto yuto va 3 sowmyerva syatasya tasyabhivardhi ‘papairevam tasya bhavasya hanir —nirdhtavyaprasnato Janmato va—meaning that whichever Bhava is aspected by its lord or by benefics prospers and Bhavas aspected by malefic planets decay. This principle can be applied both in horary astro- logy and horoscopy. Role of Bhaya Lord “We have,to next study the Bhava lord. The lord ofa sign is the most important planet for giving the effects of a Bhava. Anushthana- paddhati, an ancient treatise on astrology, says: Bhavadipe tunga nija trikone, Swakshe- wage mitrabha samsritheva, Papagraho bhava- gato no sakto, Bhavam nidantum — vikalam karoti. “Tt means when the Bhava lord is posited in the exaltation sign, moolatrikona, own house or ftiend’s house, a malefic posited in the Bhava (under scrutiny) cannot destroy the bhava in full ; but it will make the house defective. On the contrary, where the lord of house is in an inimical house debilitated, combust or weak, a benefic planet posited in the Bhava cannot make it prosper. This principle is enshrined in the sloka Balaheena arineechasthe moode va bhava- nayake, Bhavasya sambadam kartum na sakyam bhavamsriteehi which means for a Bhava to be strong, the lord of the house must be strong. The planets posited in and aspecting the Bhava under question alone cannot confer prosperity on the Bhava. “The words of Vaidyanatha Dikshitar Yad- bhavanathaou ripuripharandhra Dusthanpou yad= bhavanasthitow va, Tadbhavanasam — katha~ syantu thagn® also may be borne in mind in 190 this context. “According to him for a Bhava to be strong, the Jord of the house must be strong. The planets posited in and aspecting the Bhava under question cannot fructify the effects of the Bhava. . Karaka too, Important “The significator (karaka) is an important planet. The karaka must be strong and well placed. It must not be hemmed inbetween malefics. It may be observed in practice that if the lord of a house and its significator are strong and well placed, it results in cent per cent growth of the Bhava. “Where only the Bhava lord is strong but the significator is debilitated, it may not result in the cent per cent growth but be reduced by some degrees. Where the Bhava lord is debili- tated, combust or in an enemy’s house, and the significator alone is strong, the Bhava does not prosper at all. A sloka from Anushtanapaddhati says : Bhavadhiroodekshaka karakeswara, Scha- thwaryami chakhila bhava sadhakah, Neechari moudyopagathebale adhipe. Pare na saktaha khalu bhava sadhana, meaning that the planet posited in a house, the planet aspecting the house in question, the significator and lord of the house are the four factors that make or mar Bhavaphala. But where the Bhava lord of the house is debilitated, combust or in an inimical house, the other three plancts are unable to give results of the Bhava. “Born 24-11-1950. Whatever the metaphysical approach to Capricorn ascendant may be, he is likely to be greedy covetting other peoples money, exteemely miserly, unoriginal and plodding, radiating an aura of selfishness, prejudice, self-centredness and depression often verging on unsociability. The 10th lord with the 6th lord of the 6th house itself aspected by a malefic Mars does not give much hope for the eminence and successful career of the person. Whether superficially these charac- teristics are nullified in the present case of not is not under discussion ; what we are interested in is to assess the general direction in the horoscope and the level at which it is operative. The very fact that the 10th house is flanked by two malefics, namely Ketu in the 9th and Mars in the 11th is not often said to be helpful for the success of the person. In this case, whether this combination has helped or harmed. needs to be examined. What was the purpose of present incarnation of the person concerned? Uuless this question is satisfactorily examined, the assessment of individual aspects of any one’s life may not be very enlightening. Only on the right deiermina- tion of the destiny for which a person is born, or his karma, his natural profession, a meaning 4 Carl Jung—An Astrological Analysis 193 can be assigned to the various conditions, Tesources of the person, his responses to various stimuli in life, his opportunities and latent faculties. In this regard, the 10th house and the rising mid-heaven (M.C.) are important. According to fixed sign horoscopy, that is according to the popular Indian method of astrological casting of horoscopes, Libra was the 10th house sign, though mid-heaven point atthe time of the birth was in the sign of Scorpio in Anuradha Nakshatra. Libra is balance. But it is more than mere placid un- eventful well-harmonised life between material riches and spiritual aspirations ; efficient as a man of the world. It the sign where the universal evolutionary impulse gets its upward direction; materialism gets weakened and spiritualism begins to take a stronger hold ; it is the sign which signifies nature’s bestowal of its special powers of growth and development. It contains within itself all the powers of Sep- tenary Principle which enables life to grow in multi-directions ina meaningful manner; it gives the power of the seven force-centres or the chakras which when aroused yield enormous Power over the finer forces in nature ; it is also the sign of great objectivity and detachment. The point of M.C., which if we like, may call the central direction in any one’s life lies in Scorpio, at 56° 28’ in the star Anuradha which is also symbolised by the lotus which is the flower representing growth of the soul and fecundity in human beings. Taken together, one gets the perception of occult hovering around his destiny. His karma did not lie in the usual humdrum passage of worldly exis- tence. Hehadto be concerned with giving direction in his own life or to that of others ; he was to develop either his own yogic powers had to lead others to unravel their own inner powers. Now, the planet to provide the active impetus to it, to ignite the fire so to say, is Jupiter. Jupiter is located in the 10th house suggesting his immense suitability as a teacher, counsellor, sympathiser, beneficent influence to the society where he lived, his impact on the persons around him in directing them on their upward evolutionary journey. This planet 4194 namely Jupiter is aspected by the Moon from the 4th house in the sign of Aries and the star Aswini. The 4th house is the house represent ing human emotion, heart, the great inner depth, link with the very source from, which the spark of his jivatma has been reeled off. Jupiter and the Moon are in mutual aspect ¢ in Gajakesari Yoga, whose effect, according to Dr. B. V. RAMAN, is to bestow “a lasting reputation even long after death ”. The reflection of Jupiter in the Moon neither of them being sullied by any other planet points out to the fact that the God’s adviser would find his revelations from the great depth of the human psyche. The point of innermost secrecy in one’s life would be laid bare for the consi- deration’of the Divine Teacher. Born in Aswini, the revelations would be of new pearls; new aspects of human life. And, we find all these indications wonderfully applicable in the case of Carl Jung. He had been concerned with analytical psychology as a psychopathic aid to his patients in restoring mental health to them and to lay bare to them their inner potentialities. In doing so, he took their consciousness back to the millions of years of racial memory, and through the language hidden in religious my- thologies, dreams and symbols entirely presonal to the individual he aroused the latent faculties in his patients. He made them aware of their relationship with their past lives and their future destiny. In order to express his innet convictions and discovery of the ‘individuation’ process in his patients, he did not transgress their religious sensibilities and susceptibilities ; he did not break the family life of his patients, he instilled in each of them moral values, and enlightened his patients about the glory of God and how He cared for the individual soul. He discovered a pattern in the growth in the human psyche; he could lay his finger on the universal design meant for every being. In his conviction and fulfilling his destiny he asserted himself confidently. He differed from the great Sigmund Freud who was once considered the final authority in matters relating to psycho-analysis and with The Astrological Magazine [Vol. 75, No. 2 whom he worked for very many years. But Freud was emphasizing too much of Venusian sensuality in the human mind ; even God was a phallic symbol to him, and all religious perfor- mances a substitute for sex act; such follies Jung boldly challenged, and when occasion arose he, with humility and due regard to the vanity and emotional feeling for his once colla- borator and guide Freud, established an entirely new school of psycholory where there was a place for God and for traditional scriptures and occult sciences. He reyived Tibetan Mandals, he gave the justified importance to astrology in assisting human beings. It is not without significance that once he wrote that theosophy and astrology could provide much needed security and guidance to the modern man. He was restoring the religious baiance in the modern scientific and technological age when religion and human values were at dis- count. That was his destiny revealed by the constellations. And what were his resources for fulfilling his destiny? Unless the stars enabled the indivi- dual to fulfil one’s destiny, the aspirations would not materialise and the individual would remain frustrated. For inherent strength of the person one would do well to examine the ascendant and the connected planets. In the present case, the ascendant is in Capricorn, a strong sign. It is stated that the person born in this sign is a type by himself. He is ascetic in his ways. He has singleness of purpose that is commendable. No amount of sacrifice to his purpose is too dear for him. He melts like wax in the warmth of friendship and_ goodness. Jung.was born in Sravana asterism which is a nakshatra representing an ear or an arrow presided by the deity Vishnu who is the god assigned with the tisk of preserving the uni- verse. The lord of the siga, Saturn, is said to be Siva in his aspect representing Eternity and it is placed in Aquarius, the sign of great humanitarian activities and it is also in the star Dhanishta symbolised by a musical drum pre- sided by Vasus. The ascendant lord is aspected by Jupiter placed in the 10th house, which happened to be the sign where the ascendant February 1986] lord is exalted. Mars, the lord of the 4th and the 11th houses, bas aspected Saturn in strength. Saturn being retrograde would give the effect of its placement inthe Lagna. The details of these characteristics reveal many factors ope- rating on the individual who should be able to achieve great heights. Sravana, the asterism of the ascendance, is in harmony with the Great Silence lying at the very base of all mani- festation and in microcosm, it sends the impulse of meditational attention, and even in ordinary persons it could endow the capacity of obedi- ence. Dhanishta, where Saturn, the ascendant lord, is located, represents the radiation of life force, and it leads the person to great occult attainments, though in ordinary individuals it may lead him to deprivation of material conveniences. ‘The ascendant is also powerfully aspected by the Sun from Pushya Nakshatra symbolising a flower, circle, or an arrow all with deep occult, significance whereas its presiding deity is Brahmanaspati, the lord of wisdom, as a result of these the star is capable of bestowing abun- dant spiritual magnetism giving to the person a tranquil mind. In weaker egos, it may lead to instability of emotion, but in the present case the aspect of Mars from the sign of Scorpio (which is a sign of great occult, attainments and hidden mysteries of the universe) whilst Jyeshta Nakshatra in which Mars is located is symbo- lised by an car-ring or an umbrella suggest great recognition of his merit and receipt of much reward ; the star is presided by Indra who is the supreme god of the gods; the kundalinis sakti, the Serpent Power, is the special domain of this star bestowing divine benediction which to an ordinary soul may give the feeling of arrogance. Jupiter’s aspect of Saturn, the ascendant lord, from the 10th house, itself forming Guru-Chandra Yoga thus strengthening the quality of this teacher of gods, and angels greatly strengthens the latter. Jupiter is in Chita symbolised by a pearl, presided over by Tvastra, the celestial architect representing the great cosmic dimension of space, or the dance of Siva, and providing the impulse for creative activities, generating new thought impulse in Cart Jung—An Astrological Analysts 193 this world. Under such constellations, one could very soundly expect the jivatma, the ego, to have direct affinity with the higher creative intelligences of the universe ; the person born under such constellations should have a mind capable of delving very deeply in the hidden mysteries of life and the creation. He would certainly be exceptional. In actual life Carl C. Jung very appropriately reflected the effect of the constellation he was born in. The various characteristics of the ascendant and its lord, that we have described above, should corroborate the various qualities exemplified in him. At the outset, his feeling of solitude is amply given out by the stars, “As a child I played alone and in my own way,”” he wrote once. On another occasion he talked of his delight in solitude, and said that he ‘had a secret word” of his own, About his interest in occult powers, he wrote that he practised yoga exercises’ when he found his feelings were getting out of hand, About his deeply spiritual urge of his being, specially exemplified by the aspect of Jupiter on his Saturn and both of these aspecting the Moon, fone could find from the following how he aligned himself on the side of God and felt an intimacy with Him: “Often I felt that in all decisive matters I was no longer among men, but was-alone with God. And when I was there I was no longer alone. I was outside time. I belonged to the centuries.” The duality in him caused by a strong Saturn and strong Jupiter had deeply affected his psyche so much that he wrote that he had a family, he had a job, a medical diploma from a Swiss university, and had a wife and five children, but somewhere in him he felt that he was a very different person, an old sage.“ Somewhere deep in the background,” he wrote, “I always knew I was two persons. One as the son of my parents Who went to school, the other was grown up, old, in fact remote from the world of ours but close to nature, and above alll to dreams and to whatever God worked directly through him.” Like this, one can get many utterances from Carl C. Jung to signify that his (Continued on page 244) 196 The Astrological Magazine (Vol. 75, No. 2 Discovery of the Dead—IV' Kar LUKE* NOW perceived that they closely followed the outline of the nervous system of the human body, crowned by the mass of the brain. If the brain and nerves of a human being could be dissected ont entire, and made to emit violet light, the resulting appearance would exactly correspond with that presented by the pheno- menon by which I found myself surrounded. Biologists will readily appreciate the extreme beauty of the spectacle produced by the exqui- site tracery of the nervous system seen under such conditions. As these luminous shapes floated round me, I was reminded of a group of purple anemones, with their delicate tentacles walking to and fro in a translucent pool of sea water. Jt was by this time apparent that the Zoo- morphs, as I was inclined to call them at the outset, before apprehending their true charac ter, were aware, that they had attracted my regard, and that they desired to enter into some Kind of communications with me. ‘The foremost of the web-like creatures, rai ing its right arm, of rather the fibres correspon- ding to that limb, beckoned to me to draw my attention, and then went through the motions of tracing in the air a series of great letters in the Germen character, spelling this sentence: “We are the Dead”. The intimation, which I could not disregard, that the phenomena I had detected were necro- logical, stimulated my curiosity and interest to a very high degree. J could not but realize that if this result were confirmed, it followed that my experiments in ultra-chromatic radiation had not only brought a new world within reach of the physicist, but, had incidentally solved the great problem of ‘Part IU of the article has been reproduced in the A.M., December 1985. *Late Professor of Advanced Physics and Chemistry, Berlin University. persistence of consciousness after death, a pro- blem which has long been regarded as one of the most difficult of solution in the whole range of physiology. Inasmuch asI am not myself a professed physiologist, I recognised the necessity of pro- ceeding with the utmost caution. Specialists are at all times inclined to view with jealousy intrusions into their own domain by workers in other branches and it was, therefore, doubly necessary for me to report nothing which I bad not thoroughly verified. As the forms before me appeared to under- stand the use of language, I put a question to the necromorph which had, so to speak, ad» dressed me = * Cam you hear what I say". The necromorph spelled out the answer as before. “We do not hear you, but we read the action of your vocal nerves.” This was a valuable hint. I looked round, and perceived that seve- ral of the shapes were moving what corres- ponded to the labial and lingual nerves, from which I inferred that they were talking to each other. By watching them carefully during the weeks that followed, I was gradually able to dispense with the clumsy pantomime I have described and I am now able to converse with necromorphs as freely as with liomorphs. I continued my examination of the necromorph : “* What is your name ”” “ Tam your father”, The answer caused me the most profound emotion. My father had been dead for nine- teen years, and his body is buried in Darpat, a distance of three hundred miles from Sastein, On recovering my self-possession I felt that 1 must test the statement of the necromorph. 1 asked it: * How is it that you are here?”” (Continued on page 224) February 1986] The Vedic Science of Aeronautics 197 The Vedic Science of Aeronautics S. R. N. MURTHY, Msc. EVELOPMENTS in the modern science of aeronautics can be traced to the times of Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). The invention of the balloon in 1783 was a great step in the advancement of this science. American airman Orville Wright with his brother Wilbur Wright began gliding experiments on the sand dunes of Kitty. Hawk, North Carolina, in;the latter part of the 19th century and made successful flights’by adding a power-driven engine to their glider. On December 17, 1903 they made four flights, the longest being 852 feet. It is stated shat “These flights were the first in which a man had been carried from the ground on flight by a power-driven aeroplane”. Later develop- ments in this science are simply spectacular. Although many achievements of the Indians in ancient times have been known especially in some of the positive science-disciplines like mathematics, astronomy, medicine, civil engi- neering and architecture, hotany, mineralogy, ete., etc., as evident from the available texts in Sanskrit, it is not yet known to many that they were at home with the modern science of aero- nautics as well. This has been made clear from a book published by the Iiternational Academy of Sanskrit Research, Mysore. The title’ of the book is Vymaanika Shaastra by Maharshi Bharadwaaja, and has been rendered into English by Mr. G. R. Josyer and was first published by the Coronation Press in 1973. ‘The book is unique in many respects. It is, stated that it is part of the greater text in Sanskrit by Bharadwaaja under the title Yantra Sarvasva or All about Machines. The section treated here is called Vymaanika Prakarana, and contains 21 chapters. Qualifications of a pilot, description of aerial routes, parts of an aeroplane, clothing of pilots, food of pilots, the metals used in the construction of aircrafts, mirrors used in the aircrafts, fuel and power of the aeroplanes, parts of the acro-machines, varieties of aeroplanes including Shakuna, 5 Sundara, Rukma and Tripura varieties have been dealt with at length. There is also another text attributed to Blfaradwaaja on the same subject under the title Brihadvimaana Shastra with a commen- tary by Brahmamuni published by the Chow- khamba Vidya Bhavan, Varanasi. The text by the International Academy of Sanskrit Research contains the commentary of Bodhaananda. In addition to this commentary, comments from some 64 other Sanskrit texts have been: utilised to make the text as complete as possible. These texts are given below : 1. Agatattwa Laharee, 2. Most of the above texts referred to are not available at present. The author of the text must have been firrt- rate engineer. According to him the pilot must have been trained in the science of knowing the seen and unseen, contraction-expansion, etc, special siddhis, secrets of manoeuvring, hearing distant sounds, exercising magnetic pulls, etc- —in all 32 secrets. He then describes many recognised air routes in the various regions of the atmosphere named as Rekhaapathha, Mandala, Kakshya, Shakti and Kendra. He describes the whirlpools in these regions. After enumerating the body of an aeroplane as con- sisting of some 31 parts, the text deals with the clothing and food of pilots. Then follows a treatment on the metals used in the construc- tion of aeroplanes. The author mentions three numbers of what he calls root metals by name Souma, Soundaal and Mourthwika, by proces- sing of which in certain proportions by acecpted procedures, 16 metallic alloys could be prepared which are light metals used in the construction of aeroplanes. He refers to other texts like Lohakalpa wherein it is mentioned that there are 3,000 metal bearing layers within the earth of which 1,300 layers contain better quality metals. In the 7th layer 27 types of metals are Known of which the third type has five-fold qualities of the root metals. According to Lohakalpa the following forces from outside the earth interact with the four other forces active within the earth in the production of these metals. They are: Forces from outside the earth ; forces from inside the earth Nature Number] Nature proportion Koorma 3 Vaarunee Kaashyapa. 8 Shesha ‘Maarthaanda n Gaja Bhoota 5 Bhanaam 2 Arka 6 Indu 4 Badva 9 Body The Astrological Magazine [Vol. 75, No. 2 Processes for purification of these metals are then mentioned, followed by the proportions of various beeja or root metals to be mixed for making alloys. Some 407 different crucibles and 532 varieties of furnaces are known, the text states. The details of the preparation of these light metals and also the types of bellows are given. The chapter dealing with the prepa- ration of mirrors contains very interesting in- formation. Television type of mirror, power- capturing mirror, appearance changing mirror, terrifying type mirror, etc., have been described as also their preparation. Then the fuel for the aircraft is given. Seven kinds of distinct operating forces have been recognised in the functioning of an aeroplane. They are 1. Udgama; 2. Panjaraa; 3. Sooryashaktya- pakarshinee; 4. Paraashaktyaakarshinee; 5. Kuntinee; 6. Moolashakti; and 7. A set of 12 other forces. These powers are produced by seven engines or yantras called Tundila, Panjara, Amshupa, Apakarshaka, Saandhaa- nika, Daarpanika and Shaktiprasvaka. A detailed account has been presented on the mechanical contrivances numbering 32 required for the various functions of the aeroplane. Some of them are very interesting like the anti-lightning machine and the machine to over- come the various destructive forces produced in the upper stretches of the atmosphere, etc. Preparation of anti-lightning glass for the anti- lightning machine has been described. Also Dambhola loha or thunderbolt metal and its preparation is given. According to Khetasam- graha it is stated that Krittika, Satabhisha, Makha, Mrigasira, Chita, Sravana, Pushya and Aswini are said to be luminous stars. The planets during their course approach the fields of these stars and generate eight kinds of forces which are destructive of the aeroplane. Such forces are nullified or neutralised by the shaktyudgama yantra, it is mentioned. ‘Then follows a description of a variety of aeroplanes. They have divided the aeroplanes as Mantrika, /-e., based on spells and Tantrika, i.e., based on techniques. The former are 32 in number and are not possible now and include aeroplanes like the Pushpaka described in February 1986} Ramayana. The latter are of 56 kinds and their names have been given. The text ends with the description of the following four kinds of aeroplanes 1, Shakuna Vimaana ; 2. Sundara Vimaana, 3. Rukma Vimaana and 4. Tripura Vimaana. It is extremely difficult to comment on the text. First of all many at the present juncture of civilisation tend to question the scientific development of the Vedic times. Though they accept the marvellous advancement made by the Vedic seers on the fronts of medicine, mathematics, astronomy, linguistics, ete., etc., many hesitate to comment on the advance in science and technology of the Vedic civilisation. But the description given in the aeroplanes in this partially available text is simply amazing. The preparation of different kinds of mirrors, the energy-producing machines, construction of aircrafts, etc., etc., appear to be something novel and difficult to accept. Secondly, assum- ing that such advanced technology was in existence, what happened to it and how it got —completely lost in later history—is difficult to make out in spite of a consideration that the internal industry met with external threats. Thirdly, one must think, if at this phase of history, whether ancient technology can be revived with a modern touch. (One can see the number of texts that this partial book on the construction of aeroplanes has made reference to in an earlier section. It is evident that most of them are not available at present. A search for similar texts must be made in all the oriental research institutes the world over for an inventory. If any of them could be made available then itis evident that such an advanced technological civilisation existed in the Vedic times, otherwise it would not have been postible to make such clear-cut observations. Also, experiments, details of which have been so nicely described, should be conducted for their truth of information. We have now bullet-proof glass, sound-proof paints etc.; similarly, the experiments may show us the way to prepare thunder-proof metal, anti- lightning glass, ete. The Vedie Science of Aeronautics 199 Now is the era for making instruments to utilise the energy from the Sun. Solar power is known to be enormous and its utility for many purposes can be established by way of, these experiments. According to the information presented in an article entitled ‘* Vedakaalada Vimaana Shaastra” by Sri P. K. Bangera from Bombay inthe 7th number of the 4th volume of the Journal Veda Prakasha published from Kunji- bettu, Udupi (for October 1978), it appears experiments were conducted on the .basis of these and other texts in Sanskrit. on the con struction of aeroplane at the end of the 19th century. It is mentioned to have been recorded. on page 30 of a book Hindu Scriptures by Mr. Vaasudeva Visoon Doyaal of Mauritius island and pubiished by Messrs. Macmillan & Co. One Sri Shivakar Bapooji Thatapade construc- ted an aeroplane on the basis of the Vedic Mantras and exhibited it at the Town Hall, Bombay, in an exhibition conducted by the Bombay Arts Society. Further experiments by Sri Talapade on the possibility of using mercury inthe generation of energy for the aeroplane to fly, it is mentioned, were success- ful. The name of the aeroplane constructed by Sri Talapade was ‘Marutsakha’ and was made to fly in Chowpatty, Bombay, in the pre- sence of adarge number of spectators in 1895. It is also mentioned by Sti Bangera that the spectators included Maharaja Sayyaji Rao Gaekwad of Baroda, Mahadeva Govinda Ranade and others. Further, it is mentioned that the aeroplane was sold toa British Com- pany by Talapade’s relations, later. Construction of aeroplanes which fly on the energy of mercury cells may be difficult to accept now. Before long, one may witness such things in the era of modern science. Per- haps these experiments may be beyond an dividual’s limits of finance. But institutions which are devoted to conducting experiments in the development of technology and science specially inthe branch of aerodynamics and related subjects should be able to carry them out, of course with the help of people who can lead in this line of study. (Continued on page 235) 200 The Astrological Magazine (Vol. 75, No. 2 Jupiter’s Role as a Karaka S. R. GUPTA ENERALLY, when a Bhava or house is ‘analysed, the three significant factors to be examined are, ({) the Bhava, (ii) its lord and (iii) its karaka. The other planets related to these also play their respective roles in the fructification of the Bhava’s matters. My. personal opinion is that the true guardians of a house are its lord and its karaka. I have also observed that the occupant/s of a Bhava is/are more powerful than the planet/s whose association/s it receives. The events regarding a Bhava take place when the major or sub-period of its lord, its karaka, its occupant/s ‘and their associates operate. But the ultimate fate of an event is to be determined by the nature of the resultant of the two types of the planetary forces—the natal positions and the transit positions work- ing at the time when the event is to take place. Regarding the analysis of a Bhava, Dr. B. V. Raman is of the view that “the adhipati or lord of the house is responsible to anjimmense extent for the control of the house. But, if in a particular case, the lord is badly placed, and the house itself has good conjunctions and aspects, then the evil results should not be predicted.” He does not mention the role of a karaka in the assessment of a house, though he ana- lyses their roles in the interpretations of the horoscopes included in the book. ‘The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the faét that a karaka, even if he is possessed of strength, fails to bless the native with the benefit of his significations unless either of the two—the Bhava or its lord—is sufficiently strong. A karaka alone is of no appreciable worth, Itis still better if both—the Bhava and i lord—are strong. Iam yet to come across 3D. B. V. Rasa: ‘Vol. One, p. 6. How 10 Judge a Horoscope, a horoscope in which all the above-mentioned three factors are strong. Much literature is not available on karakas. The identity of a planet in the capacity of a karaka is never altered, no matter, whatever be the situation. [ feel that, in his major or sub-period, a karaka’ works more: vigorously to cause an event than any other concerned planet. He keeps on operating throughout the life of the native, whereas, other planets ope- rate when their turns come. A karaka is always augmentative in proportion to his strength, and thus his role is crucial. In almost all the horoscopes, we find the karakas associated with their respective Bhavas in one way or the other. Each of them rules at least one person. For example, Venus, in his capacity as a karaka, rules wife. When the major or sub-period of Jupiter operates, whether or not he is associated with the Sth Bhava or its lord, his potential energy is fully released, and he is bound to touch the person represented by him. He is known as a ‘Putrakaraka’. If it is the time to get a child, there is a pregnancy and the child is born. If the time for getting children is over, he influ- ences the matters of their lives such as edu- cation, employment and marriages. - , It is also believed that a combust planet éarries with him a never-to-be-detatched flaw. tag. He is a dead planet, and his position always remains the same even if he is exalted in most of the vargas. Can the deficiency caused to the planet on becoming combust be re- moved? I[think—it canbe. I feel that a combust planet does possess¢his innate strength which is exploited through his‘dispositor or the planets associated with him, ‘in case, they are strong. He is not dead in the true sense of the word. The house ruled by the Sun who causes combustion is to’ be noted. If he rules the Lagna or a benefic house, the gravity of com- bustion is not much. If he is the 8th lord» February 1986] combustion is more baneful. Therefore, a planet in the capacity of a karaka, even if he is combust, is capable of doing something for the house allotted to him.’ All the results are to be stored in the Bhava 7 We are enjoined to judge a Bhava from its Karaka also. This proves thata Karaka enjoys the status given to the Lagna and the Moon. What I feel is that the Lagna, the Moon and the karaka symbolize joy/suffering at the physi- cal, mental and the spiritual Tevels of existence respectively. When a karaka is weak/afilicted/ combust, the native’s soul is upset over the significations ruled by him. It is wisely advised to calculate the percentage of the contribution made by a karaka in the total assessment of a Bhava. It always varies. But the karaka cannot be ignored, whatever be the quantim of contribution. The matter in hand, progeny, concerns the Sth Bhava. Jupiter is the Karaka for children in general and for sons in particular. Itis essential here to throw some light on this Bhava. There will be children if the Sth Bhava, its lord and its karaka are under beneficial influences. gremarfareatrr ad aaa aria atfirtr arfir gasifeatsisra wt The above sloka means: “If the lord of the sign occupied by the Sth lord in Navamsa is associated with or aspected by a benefic/benefics, the native is undoubtedly blessed with a son.”” The same book, in the same chapter at Sloka No. 8 includes the 2nd Bhava in forming a planetary combination regarding the attainment ofason. The sole of the 2nd Bhava is justified, as it represents the native’s family. geen farand qiaenfad 4 gd atau galeria ‘The above sloka means: “‘If the strong 2nd lord is placed in the Sth, and is also aspected by Jupiter, the native gets a son.” Sarvartha Chintamani states that ‘when the Sth lord aspects the Lagna or is placed there, and the Lagna lord is placed in the 5th, the son is obedient. Obedience in sons is a great asset 6 Jupiter's Role as a Karaka 207 for the parents’. “Disobedience in children is, noticed when Mars or Rahu is associated with the afflicted Sth lord, particularly when he is not aspected by the Lagna lord. Children are born late in life when Saturn is in the 8th, the Sun is in the Sth, Aries or Scorpio rises in the Ascendant, and there are no benefic influences on them ‘An adopted son/daughter is indicated when tlie 5th Bhava contains any of the signs of Mer- curyzor Saturn, and the same is associated with Saturnyor Mandi. Venus in the 7th, the Mou. the 10th and evil planets in the Sth from the Sth lord denote no living child. ‘The Ist born isa male, if the Sth lord is placed in the Ist or 2nd or 3rd. 7Mars, Venus and the Moon in the common signs—Sagittarius excluded—denote more male issues. If Saturn, Mercury and the Moon focus their attention on: the {Sth, its lord and its karaka Jupiter, they reduce the possibility of the birth ofason. When the Lagna and the Moon are associated with the evil planets and the Lagna lord is in the Sth, the family is extinguished The placement of the malefics in the Ist, Sth, 8th and 12th is not at all conducive to the birth of children. Dr. B. V. RAMAN is of the view that male children are got if the Sth lord is in the houses of the Moon or Venus, and is asso- ciated with them? According to Sarvartha Chintamani, “if the 5th or its lord is subjected to a Papakartari Yoga, and the karaka of the Sth (Jupiter) is associated with malefics, the sons are destroyed”. Thave often observed that the Papakartari ‘Yoga and the placement of malefics in the 4th, the 5th, the 8th, the 9th and the 12th from a Bhava, its lord and its karaka always impede the growth of the significations of the Bhava concerned. The Papakartari Yoga, in parti- cular, is very destructive, and the aspect/s of a benefic/benefics does/do not seem to reduce its venom. Similarly, immense damage is done to the Bhava if its lord and its Karaka are in conjunction, association or aspect with Mars, Rabu and the 6th, 8th and 12th houses or their lords. Rabu and Mars harm them more quickly and cruelly. Zi{ow to Judge a Horoscope, Volum: 91> p. 225, 202 When I study the prospects of a Bhava, T always examine the influences of the yoga. karaka and the maraka/s on it, its lord and its Karaka. A yogakaraka confers financial prosperity, dignity and happiness. On the other hand, a maraka creatts obstructions, death and delays. It is a matter of great surprise that only Mars, Saturn and Venus have the lege of being yogakarakas. — - Most of us have started realising that two children are enough to complete the family> therefore, the astrological methods of deter- mining the number of children may be dropped or revised. When a lady is pregnant, and we want to identify the sex of the child to be born, I don’t think there is need to examine the horoscope of the husband also. It can be known even from her horoscope. I agree with Dr. RAMAN when he says that “in studying the Sth house. it is essential that the horoscopes of both the hus- band and the wife are considered from the point of view of fertility and sterility.""* Now,-I examine three horoscopes to substan- tiate the fact that a karaka feels badly handi- capped when the house allotted to it and its lord are afflicted. In Chart 1* Cancer, the Sth house, is badly damaged owing to the presence of three first- rate malcfics—the Sun, Saturn and Rahu. The Sun is the 6th lord, and Saturn rules the 11th and the 12th. Saturn is also a maraka here. Venus is not helpful, since he rules the 3rd and the 8th, and is also a maraka for Pisces Ascen- dant. Jupiter's aspect fails to counterbalance the combined evil generated by the presence of the three malefics in the Sth. ‘The Sth lord, the Moon, is also afflicted, as he is in the 8th in conjunction with Mars. Mars and Saturn are tn mutual quadrants. The 3How to Judge a Horoscope. Volume One, p. 235. @ Chart 7. Jupiter's position both in Rasi and Navamsa is suffi- ciently strong. He is also not subjected to the Papakartari Yoga. Both the Sth and its lord are badly damaged. The native bad no children. The Sth lord from the Moon and the Sth from Navamsa Lagna are also afflicted. “Jupiter is fairly well dis- posed.’ But he felt greatly handicapped, and did not bless the native with a son. In Chart 2% Aquarius, the 5th, is occupied by Mars, who is a first-rate malefic. He also possesses maraka powers, being the Jord of the 2nd and the 7th from the Ascendant. The aspect af Saturn, though a yogakaraka, is not beneficial, as he is in the 8th. He is also expected by Mars. The Sth Bhava suffers at the hands of Mars and Saturn, No benefic aspects the Sth. The Sth lord Saturn is in a benefic sign. He also aspects tha Sth, his own house. His competence to look after his house is marred owing to the fact that he is in the 8th, and is also aspected by Mars whose power to harm the Sth and its lord is really tremendous. Ttis clearly evident that Jupiter's position is safe both in Rasi and Navamsa. He also becomes the lord of the sign occupied by the Moon. But the 5th lord is in the 6th from him. ‘The affliction of the Sth and its lord made the native issueless. Note also. the affliction of the Sth and its lord from the Moon Lagna. Even in the Navamsa, the Sth lord is much afflicted. Dr. RAMAN writes while interpreting the Sth Bhava's prospects that “the karaka’s moderately benefic disposition should be ignored", supporting the fact that a karaka fails to deliver the goods when the Bhava and its lord are weak/aMficted. In fact, I repeat, his job is to augment them. chow to edge a Horn:re, Volume One p. 247 Che firs two charts have been taken from Dr. B.Y. When the horoscope was shown to me, the native, a lady, ran the sub. period of Jupiter in the Dasa of Rahu. Mark the fact that Jupiter influences the Sth and the 9th through his aspect on Venus and Saturn, the lords of these two houses respectively, and is placed in the 7th in company with the Moon who is very important in matters of pregnancy. She became pregnant during Jupiter's sub- period (5-5-1983 to 29-9-1985). Jupiter caused the pregnancy and intended to bless her with ason. | tald her of this astrological conclusion. On account of preoccupation, I overlooked the other adverse planetary combinations which stood in the way of Jupiter and made him feel helpless. A male child was born, but it was still-born. Everything was normal till the time of deli- very. At the last moment, wisdom left them. The case was handled by a midwife who did not succeed in her efforts and spoiled the case. The native was taken to the General Hospital where she delivered the dead baby. Was it a mistake or the result of the prevjous actions, which, I believe, the planets represent, at least with regard to major events of life? The sad event is justifiable through the plane- tary combinations in her chart. We are compel- led to commit blunders. Free-will is exercised only in such matters as are not of much significance. The view that a karaka alone is not empowered to safeguard the significations of the Bhava concerned holds good to a great extent in this case. . A close scrutiny of her horoscope reveals that the Sth Bhava is subjected to the Papa- kartari Yoga. It is also aspected by a first rate malefic, Saturn. The Sth lord, Venus, is almost in close conjunction with Saturn. The nodes’ venom is also there. Even from the eChart 3. Rasi: Gemini~Ascendant ; Leo—Venus and Saturn ; Virgo~the Sun ; Libra—Ketu and Mereury; Scorpio—Mars ; Sagittarius—Jupiter_ and the Moon; and Aries—Rahu. Navamsa: Cupticorn—Ascendant, Ketu and Mercury; Aries—Jupiter ; Gemini—Saturn ; Cancer—Venus, Mars and Rahu; Leo—the Sun; and Libra—the Moon. ’ Jupiter's Role as a Karaka 203 Moon, the Sth and its lord are not quite strong. In the Navamsa also, the Sth lord is marred and there is no benefic aspect on the Sth. Jupi ter’s position both in Rasi and Navamsa is sound, though he suffers from a slight blemish being in Moola Nakshatra ruled by Ketu. And this blemish can be safely ignored. In Ashtaka- varga, he gets 6 benefic dots in the sign occupied by him in Rasi. Despite all this, he failed to ovércome the affliction and weakness suffered by the Sth and its lord. Even by Gochara reckoning, things did not seem to be salutary. It is evident from the chart 4 (Chart 4) erected for the transit posi- tions on 22-10-1984. The transit of Saturn through the Sth was completely adverse. At the same time, he aspectedthe Dasa and the Bhukti lords and thus obstructed/cancelled the results they intended to give. The 6th Bhava in Rasi_ was subject to the Papakartari Yoga caused by the transits of the malefics, and she suffered much physically. The Moon in transit remained unaspected indicating that the lady felt even more grieved mentally. (Dasa and Antardasa lords were at 6th/8th positions from, each other in transit.) Before I end my paper, I would like to comment on the transit of Jupiter over his natal position or the natal Moon. It is stated in standard texts that his transit over these two natal points indicate suffering. 1 feel that Jupiter's transit over them does not cause any suffering at all. He systematically stands for God’s grace. - Why should he behave adversely? 1 request my friends who are well versed in astrology to clarify as to why it is stated that he causes suffering when he touches these two natal positions which, I think, are very significant. The transit of Jupiter over his own natal position and the natal Moon in the lady’s horo- scope proved utterly useless because of the highly adverse influences of the transiting malefics on him. To sum up, when a Bhavaand its lord are weak/afilicted,’ the karaka concerned, even if he is sufficiently strong, loses his competence to do any good to the native. In his sub-period, Jupiter, in the case of the lady, could not fulfil the obligation expected of him. He did give a fruit. Alas! It was bitter.—20.85. 4 Chart 4Rasi: Gemini—Ascendant ; Virgo—the Moon ; Libra—the Sun and Saturn; Scorpio—Venus and Ketu; and Sagittarius—Mars and Jupiter; and Taurus—Rahu. Tha Astrological Magazine Vol. 78, No. 2 A Fragment of History—II K.N, ‘T must have become clear by now that it is my first ever article in which I am discussing no prediction given by me or giving any piece of my research but am giving the portrait of a noble man rarely discussed outside Orissa, and, in portraying him, through astrological analysis, am combining necessary historical details com- piled painstakingly, sometimes, even by taxing the methory of Mrs. Kailash Kumari Devi, the erstwhile Maharani, daughter of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala and wife of late Mr. R. N, Singh Deo. Bui in so doing1 am ‘applying consistently the same principles and results of my research which Thave discussed in my earlier articles, particularly, in the “* Three-Stage ” series. My clear and honest intention in discussing the horascope of Mr. R.N. Singh Deo is also to answer the challenging question of the gene- ration of India’s young men whether there ever, existed better specimens of humanity in power in India after independence ; in a nation where we talk of tyaga (self-abnegation) the examples paraded before our eyes by India’s newspapers is of those in | powert—those bhogis who, in the American fashion, have to be projected through publicity, in short, products of India’s now sprawling image-building industry. Mr. Mohammed Yunus exposed it with contempt when the ‘big’ editors of India had indulged in editorial rhetorics as and when Mrs. Gandhi uttered a word as though they were required to write commentaries on Brahma Sutras, and, when she lost her elections in 1977 had denounced her and her Emergency. That in such an era and in such decades there existed among usa person like Mr. R.N. Singh Deo is a self-reminder we need to console and self- inspire ourselves with the thought, feeling and actuality that in India inexhaustible number of *Part I of the article bas appeared in January 1986 issue of the A. Mf, RAO, 1A.A: good and noble men have always been there in all eras, and, that some of them can“also come into power. In discussing this 1am now dis- cussing a historical figure, whom I neither met nor ever saw. Iam cutting out those political controversies which can have repurcussions even now. This constraint necessitates my selection of only such events, for the purposes of timing, as reveal the unfailing Hindu Dasa systems, combined with transits. The scheme of timing being followed here is three-fold : (a) Using the Vimshottari Mahada: (6) Using Jaimini’s Chara Dasa ; (© Synthesising them with transits of planets. The Princely Upbringing Mr. R. N. Singh Deo (to be referred as R. N hereafter) born as the second son of the Raja of Sareikela could never have been the king of his father’s state but he was adopted by Maharaja Raj Singh Deo of Bolangir, who was childless. He was born in the Dasa of his best yogakaraka Venus, also his 9th lord. His 9th house receives, for this purpose, aspects of the Sth and the 12th lords. He thus went into adop- tion. But Saturn transiting into the 7th house of Dwadasamsa and aspecting his natal Sun took away his adoptive father also. He was looked after by the British Political Agent revealing the influence of the 12th lord on the 9th house. In Vimshottari it was the Dasa of the 9th Jord when it all happened and in Chara Dasa Aquarius period, containing bhratrukaraka (applicable to father also) was on. Academic Career He got successively Dasas of Venus, the Sun aspected by Jupiter and the Moon aspected by his best yogakaraka, -Venus (all of them excel- ently wellplaced in his Chaturvimsamsa) during his student days. February 1986] The Chara Dasas of Kumbha (Aquarius) Meena (Pisces), Mesha (Aries) and part of Vrishabha (Taurus) covered his educational career from all of which particularly: Aries and Taurus, the tenth house,‘ combined with the Sth house receives brilliant aspects to ensure an academic career about which Dr. Nagendra Singh, at present President of the International Court of Justice (see my article in 4.M., January 1984), said : “late Rajendra Narayan Singh Deo who was associated with me at the Mayo College, Ajmer.......had an outstanding educa- tional record. He always stood first in his class and topped the list of successful candidates in the diploma examination....... as far as T remem- ber he won all the prizes and medals of distinc- tion in his studies. Apart from being scrupu- lously honest in all his dealings with his friends at the college, he showed a religious bent of mind and remained throughout a God-fearing individual.” Later R. N. topped at the Patna University also. Coronation * He was coronated on 16-1-1924. (a) In Vimshottari it was the period of Sun~ Mercury, the 7th and Sth lords in the birth horoscopes and in Dasamsa the Sun, as the 10th lord, is exalted and Mercury is in the 7th house. () In Chara Dasa it was Pisces-Scorpio from where the amatyakaraka, Jupiter, in the 9th house is excellently well placed and in the sub-period of Scorpio where the amatyakaraka is placed, he was coronated. God willing I may discuss some of these later, based on pure Jaimini principles, and my studies into some horoscopes of the real blue-blooded. (©). On the day of the coronation Jupiter, in transit, was in the 10th house from Lagna, on natal Jupiter and aspecting the 10th house from the Moon as well. Saturn had only three months before aspected his 10th lord in Gemini (see my article in A.M., April 1985); the Moon from Taurus was aspecting the 10th house from Lagna and was in the 10th house from the natal Moon. Mars, the 10th lord, was in the 10th house, a perfect planetary configuration for the event. 7 A Fragment of Histery—I 205 Curing Snake-bites It has not been possible for me to ascertain full facts and dates about R.N.’s successful potentization of mantras to cure snake-bite. Sri Lokenath Misra, a member of parliament for full three terms and an ardent follower of R.N. himself cures many ailments through mantras, proof of some of which I have seen personally myself here in Bhubaneswar at his house near the great Lingaraj temple. India’s pseudo-scientists, humbugging rationalists and wine bibbling journalists with Indo-Anglican pretensions should compile cases of successful cures and calculate percentages. Ihave not seen R. N, and there is no question of my citing any instance of successful cures done by him of snake-bites. But I have seen other types of, ailments being cured by Mr. Lokanath Mishra who learnt these mantras from a mahatma, still living, somewhere in Kulu valley. For the purpose of astrological investigation I would request readers to consider the following in the horoscope of R..N. (a) From Karakamsa (Scorpio) Rahu is ia the Sth associated with the 10th lord. All the contemporaries, living or dead, of R. N. re= member him as a successful curer of snake-bite, an aspect of his public life which showed how deeply concerned he always had been with the suffering‘of his people. (® In Vimsamsa Rabu is again in the Sth aspected by Jupiter and the Moon from the Lith house. In esoteric astrology the 11th house and the 11th ford show the success in siddhi, or potentizing of mantras. But getting accurate Vimsamsa is a serious astrological problem. () R.N.’s interest, it appears, in mantra-cure was either aroused or success attained in his Rahu Dasa after he had got a hint about such a possibility in a reading of the Bhrigu Samhita, it appears, in the earlier years of independence when he was passing through the major period of Rahu. ‘Some Domestic Events Some Bhrigu Samhita or Nadi Grantha readings resemble Hindu mythology, some are absolutely fraudulent, some are peripherally correct, some 206 quite accurate in describing details about child- ren, their number and sex but mostly pre- dictions about future go wrong unless some stretching of a loose and vague expression is done to explain away some events. . Yet in the readings given to the family members of R.N. while some details have come out true and some gone wrong, the one common factor in most of the readings seemed to be that the entire family would be taking to spiritual practice seriously. It, according to me, has been the most accurate and best prediction. Yet the seeking of # pure astrologer should impel us to seek some astrological explanations only applying well-known principles. (1) Mars in the 5th house generally gives two sons and R.N. has two sons; aspect of Saturn on the Sth house and Sth lord gives daughters and R.N. has four daughters. Counting done according to Ashtakavarga is quite dependable in this case. (2) Marriages take place in the Dasa of planets which have anything to do with the 7th house, etc. (though my major research has esta- blished it also to be totally otherwise, I am not referring to it here). The marriage of R. N. took place in April 1932 in Moon-Mercury with sub-sub-period of the Sun, the 7th Jord or the ‘Moon in the 7th house, on. (3) Jupiter must aspect Venus and Vivaha Saham at the time, say, within one year, of the marriage of the male or alternatively the 7th lord or transit into the 7th house. (4) In my three stages of prediction series 1 have referred to aspects of Saturn, Jupiter, Mars and the Moon causing birth of children. It applies to all six horoscopes of R. N.’s six children which I need not discuss here. (5) Children are born, in Vimshottari Dasa, in the period or sub-periods of planets which have any connection with the 5th house or Sth lord from Lagna or Jupiter or Jupiter or Jaimini’s putra karaka (significator of progeny) or a planet aspected by a planct im the Sth house. R. N.’s first child was born in Moon- Ketu which is aspected by Mars in the Sth house ; the 2nd and the 3rd children were born The Aarological Magazine [Vol. 75, No. 2 in Moon-Venus, and here Venus is the puira- Karaka; the 4th child. was born in Mars—Jupi- ter; the Sth in Rahu-Rahu which is placed in the Sth from Jupiter and the 6th in Rahu- Tupiter. During the Maharaja Days One of the most extraordinary decisions of Maharaja Rajendra Narayana Singh Deo was to introduce in his state in late 1945 a State Legislative Assembly consisting of elected and nominated members, a measure which earned him not merely very high praise for his love of true democratic ideals, which he was under no ‘obligations to accept then, but put a seal of morality on his intensions to carry further his already great measures in the fields of educa- tion and land-revenue. (a) In Vimshottari Dasa he was running first the period of Mars, his 10th lord in the Sth house, a sure indication of deep thinking about, his plan of work with efficiency which was the most distinguishing mark of his illustrious career; then he was running the period of Rahu-Rahu which is aspected by Jupiter from the 10th house in the birth horoscope and is, again aspected by Jupiter from the 4th house (Aquarius) with Rabu being in the 10th house in Dasamsa. ’ It is remarkable to see both Rahu and Jupiter getting involved with his karma both in the birth horoscope and Dasamsa. (6) During this period of his distinguished and benevolent rule of his state he was first, running Taurus Dasa, later Gemini Dasa in Jaimini’s Chara Dasa. From Taurus three benefics in kendras (quadrants) and from Gemini Sun-Rahu in the 10th house aspected by Mars established his reputation as a very enlightened ruler. (©) In late 1945 when he started the Legis- lative Assembly in his state Saturn was transit- ing his 10th lord in Gemini and Jupiter was aspecting the 10th house from the Moon giving to a Maharaja’s true democratic idealism their blessings (see my article in 4.M., April 1985). Disastrous Predictions There is a school of opinion among astro- logers which believes in mechanical repetition February 1986} of predictions based on a planet’s past be- haviour in an earlier Dasa or Dasas. Such a principle is only partly valid and mostly dange- rous as will be seen here. (a) He became a Maharaja in Sun-Mercury : married in Moon-Mercury ; introduced great educational reforms in Mars-Mercury ; single- handed checked Nehru’s tidal electoral wave in 1952 with glorious results for his Ganatantra Parishad in Rahu-Mercury and best of all became Orissa’s Chief Minister in Jupiter— Mercury. During all these sub-periods of Mercury transit Jupiter was cither in the 10th house from Lagna or aspecting the 10th house with Saturn having aspected the 10th lord or the 10th house or both. It is not a coincidence but proves a theory held by some that in Vim- shottari Dasa scheme transits are in-built and that it is wrong astrological analysis of the implications of the major and minor periods in this Dasa that leads to wrong, predictions. It is therefore necessary to correlate Dasa-periods with transits for accurate results. (6) But such a mechanical repetition had led to a very bad prediction by some astro- Jogers when in the seventies his health was breaking down. See the following instances : (i) In Moon-Jupiter he was breaking acade- mic records as a student but in Jupiter-Moon, Mrs. Nandini Satpathy’s short-lived govern- ment had tried to defame him by setting up a commission against him. (2) In Rahu-Venus he organised his strong demonstrations against the States Reorga- nisgtion Commission findings (some of its recomendations factually wrong and based on, according to him, political expediency) and courtearrested ; in Jupiter-Venus he fell from power from his position as the Chief Minister of Orissa. (3) In Rahu-Jupiter he emerged as one of India’s most enlightened rulers but in Jupiter— Rahu his health suffered and he died. Against this background right-thinking astro- logers may be interested in;drawing right morals from what is being said in the concluding part of this article, the journey’s end. A Fragment of History—I > great 207 Journey's End Mr. Lokenath Misra who has been a member of the Indian parliament for three terms and a follower of R.N. has told me at least three times that during the last days of R. N. they had rushed to many astrologers in India and no ‘one had predicted about the coming end of this leader. ‘The question put to me was whether it was indicated astrologically so clearly atall or not. On my telling him that though longevity was the hardest event to predict accurately in this case there teed not have existed any doubt at all, he was surprised. (a) Applying Jaimini the presence of the Lagna and eight lords in a Chara Rasi indicating purnaayu will be misleading ; more misleading is alpaayu calculation based on Lagna and the Moon being in fixed signs; the only method was to judge it from Lagna and Hora Lagna in this case as this horoscope falls under exception emphasised by Jaimini, when thc Moon is either in the Lagna or 7th only, the Lagna and Hora Lagna are to be taken into account. Caleu- lated thus it is a madhyaayu horoscope. (6) Those who know it can see that a prin- ciple of yogajayu here does not carry longevity into purnaayu at all. Knowing full well that some people read THE ASTROLOGICAL MAGAZINE but do not work hard, I do not want to refer to that fatal combination here, for the sake of those who may, well-meaning as they are, get depressed. The purpose of astrology, parti- cularly mine, is to arouse hope, not despair. Tcan ask readers to find it out for themselves in Dr. Raman’s “Early Experiences” or in late Sri Y. Krishna Menon’s analysis of the horo- scope of Rajneesh (the “Bhagwan” who is in USA). (©) The atmakaraka in this horoscope, Saturn, is debilitated and from karakamsa Scorpio the 8th house shows predominance of. malefic influences. (d) The Vimshottari Dasa running in February 1975 was that of Jupiter, a maraka and Rahu, a natural maraka like Saturn, pre- sent in a maraka place and associated with the 208 Sun, another maraka is aspected by Jupiter, the maraka. (© In Chara Dasa death occurred in the period of Scorpio, the 8th from atmakaraka and sub-period of Aries where atmakaraka is posited. (f) Transits were most unhelpful then; Jupiter on natal Rabu, and Rabu on natal Jupi- ter (marakas associated with marakas) with Saturn on natal Mars and in Navamsa Lagna. A very detailed discussion can be carried on this subject. But it is not clear to me how anyone could put this horoscope in the Purna- ayu category at all. Or were astrologers avoiding an unpleasant prediction ?. Yet the fact remains that in none of the astrological readings given then it was told clearly. R.N. had, because of his extraordinary pre- occupations with his mission to serve people, neglected his health and developed an ailment in the stomach, colic pain which remained incurable till the end. The 5th house position ‘of Mars aspected by Saturn and the 8th house position of Ketu (no doubt mystical) aspected by Mars, the Sun and Rahu, and the 6th house affliction of the Kalapurusha—all point to- wards the ailment remaining incurable. It got, aggravated in the maraka dasa. Saturn’s transit in the Sth house from Lagna and on natal Mars was also proving bad politi- cally when, out of power, he was.required to prepare himself for an inquiry against him. On 2-2-1973 Mrs. Nandini Satpathy had set up an inquiry commission against him, and, she fell from power within nine days herself on 1-3— 1973.. L asked someone why was it done. The answer was that a new style of politics had by then been formulated to keep in check men who could cause a mighty political swing. Remember Karunanidhi's case? — Remember Shah Commission? Remember Maruti Com- mission ? People of Orissa had wept that day when they heard about the departure from this world of their noble leader; there was spontaneous hartal and his one time bitter opponent, another hero, but cast in an altogether different, mould, the well-known Biju Patnaik had said fon the floor of the Orissa Assembly on 24-2~ 1975, referring to him as “‘Sri Rajendra Narayan Singh, one of our elder colleagues”. The Astrological Magazine [Vol. 75, No. 2 “Sir, you know that while he and I were sitting in this House in the past, we were the political opponents of each other. In his dealings as Government, as an administrator, he was above board, he was fair, he was just and he was honest. He was the best of the Leaders of the Opposition. Today Iam the Leader of the Opposition. But I feel that I cannot even touch the fringes’ of the Parliamentary acumen as the Leader of Opposition.” Mr. Biju Patnaik may not be aware that the karakamsa‘of R. N. Singh Deo contains Jupiter, just as from Lagna Jupiter is in the 10th house aspecting the 10th house from the Moon as well, revealing, despite the enigmatic self-efface- ment of Oriyas and their total lack of con- certed effort to speak about their noble men outside Orissa and publicise them, the res- plendence of a jewel, Gandhiji had thought, was “lost in the forest’. But Saturn and Mercury aspect the Moon in the 10th house from the karakamsa while Jupiter and the Moon aspect the 10th house from atmakaraka. If Gandhiji had known astrology he might have modified his assessment as was done in a newspaper headline, retrospectively though, when R. N. ied. “A jewel which did not remaia lost. ”? —116.85. B. It was on February 3, 1925 at 10 a.m. that the then Governor of Bombay Sir Leslie Wilson switched on the first Suburban train at Bombay V.T. to move up to Kurla via the Harbour branch. The lucky driver who was instrumental in pioneering this event was Mr. Daruwalla who happens to. be amongst us to rejoice the event and deserves our fullest grati tute an this occasion. At sixty the human life normally begins its closing journey unlike the mundane events which have a logic and history of their own. The Electric Traction on the other hand is not only alive and kicking but also promises to gain strength in the coming years. Historians, administrators, economists and sociologists would analyse the growth and. structure of the Electric Traction according to their disciplines and their own light. Very few people would however think of analysing this temporal phenomenon in the astrological light. Time is indeed a crucial factor in the develop- ment and astrology is the right discipline to analyse the event through time. It is in this context that an attempt has been made in this article to interpret the growth and diversifica- tion of Electric Traction and to visualise the likely developments in future. The analysis is carried out in the Niryana framework using Chitra Paksha Ayanamsa. ‘The Vimshottari System of direction has been utilized for interpreting the events in addition to the normal astrological rules. It is not con- sidered necessary therefore to give a detailed resume of these factors to the perceptive readers. The chart for the event is given (Chart No. ). It has not been possible to obtain exhaustive data in respect of the Electric Traction. It will however bz seen that the data available here is, 8 sufficiently indicative about the correctness of the chart and the series of events delineated below. { Ascendant )- o-tt Moon | Pluto (Ry Mars. 19535 19-5 548 h a Chae No, bo) Rah Her. 26-38 | 3 Feb. 1925 at 10 00 a.m. 21-3 | Lat. 18-58, Long. 72-50 ‘Ayanamsa 22.48.32 | | sun 21-6 Balance of Moon Maha Dasa | Ketu 21-3" 2'years, 9months and Venus 1-19 ‘and 23 days Mere, 1 Jupiter 1143 It is remarkable to note that the Lagna is not only Vargottama but also a dynamic sign Aries whose lord is Mars placed close to the cusp in own house. The 9th lord Jupiter in own house is a natural benefic and powerfully aspects Mars. It also controls the 3rd and Sth houses through its aspects. The fifth lord Sun which is also a karaka for Government is placed in tho 10th house in digbala. The 10th lord Saturn interestingly karaka of general mass is exalted with full digbala in the 7th house with exchange of Venus placed in the 0th house in conjunction with Mercury and both are Vargot- tama ensuring expansion in the revenue through increasing public support. The Sun, Mars, Venus, Mercury and Satur being in mutual kendras become mutual karakas accord- ing to Varahamihira. Two planets are exalted and two planets in their own signs. These factors ensure the vitality of the horoscope of, Electric Traction. On the weaker side, Rahu and Ketu axis falls in the fourth and the tenth houses afflicting the Sun, the trinal Jord, Venus, the karaka for transport and Mercury, the karaka for communication and economy. The opposition of Saturn and Mars and the sixth and eighth position of Jupiter-Moon and 210 Jupiter-Rahu have their own drawbacks. The horoscope, therefore, presents challenges to the astrologer and may lead him to pitfalls in attempting the simplistic interpretations. Electric Traction in India saw marked deve- lopments initially from 1925 to 1932. extending electrification in Bombay~Pune, Bombay~ Igatpuri, Churchgate-Borivili, Madras~Tam- baram and Madras region metre gauge section: of course with required Rolling Stocks, Runn- ing Sheds, Workshops, Traction sub-station, Power-house, ete. This covers the span of the period of the Moon and period of Mars upto sub-period of Venus in Mars. ‘The later sub- periods Venus in Mars onwards did not show significant progress except introduction of Borivili-Virar section electrification in 1934~ 36 in the sub-period of the Moon in Mars extending upto Rahu in Rahu. The Moon is exalted and is ‘in Rohini and Mars forming Ruchaka Yoga is in Aswini and Ketu is con- junct the Sun, a trinal lord ina quadrant with dighala. 18 years Rahu's major period from 1935 onwards witnessed stagnation on account of Second World War and Independence Move- ment in India, Rahu is in Aslesha and aspected by three natural malefics Mars, Saturn and the Sun albeit with weak benefic aspect of Mercury and Venus. This lord of Rahu’s sign exalted, helped maintain continued stability somehow. However, at the fag end of Rabu Maha Dasa in sub-periods of the Moon and Mars in 1951, the EMU of English Electric Company were inducted to Bombay Subarban area and on 3rd September 1951, Kurla Mankhurd Service was opened. Jupiter’s major period started 1952 onwards. Jupiter is the planet for expansion and welll placed in the ninth in own house and aspecting Lagna and Lagna lord Mars. In his own sub- period, he initiated developments which subse- quently materialised in Saturn and Mercury sub-periods, i.c., from 1955 to #1959. The progress is given below : 1955 —Induction of WCM/I locos. 1956 —Breda EMU stock. 1957 —Hitchi Japan) locos. The Astrological Magazine [Vol. 75, No. 2 1958-59—NSSK (Japan) EMU stock. —SIG Switzerland EMU stock. —MAN Germany EMU stock. -AEG Germany EMU stock. —Ansaido (Italy) EMU stock English Electric and Hitachi locos on 3000 V D.C. —Completion of electrification August™1958 (which was decided in 1954) between Howrah to Burdhwan and Shearaphuli to Tarakeshwar (3000 V D.C.). ~-Decision of Railway Board (1957) to have 25 KV A.C. system on Industrial frequency (50 Hz). It is noteworthy that the actual start was given in Saturn sub-period and good progress was made in Mercury sub-period. Not only that, the important dicision taking economy into consideration was taken by the Railway Board for future electrification of 25 KV A.C. system. Saturn and Mercury, who are indi- cative of economy and planning, are ruling all upachaya houses. Mercury, an upachaya lord, is also placed in an upachaya house, in second to Jupiter, the Dasa lord, while Saturn is in the 11th to it. 1961—Hitachi WCM/4 Loco were imported. 1962-64—Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) masufactured WCM/S Locomotives with imported electrical equipments. 1963-64—Catcutta elecrified area of 3000 V D.C. was changed over to 25 KV A.C. and Hitachi and AEI WMU stocks were imported. 1964-Indigenous EMU stock for Bombay were manufactured by Jessop and Co. with imported electrical equipments. The period from 1962 to 1964 was a mile- ste for electric traction where indigenous manufacture was started. This happened in Venus, the Sun and the Moon sub-periods in Jupiter Dasa. Jupiter is in Poorvashadha and the Moon sign lord Venus is placed in the ninth sign from it in conjunction with fifth and fourth lord and all of them are in the bright hemis- phere. This indicates the aptitude towards innovations in higher spheres of Research design and self-dependency. February 1986) 1966-—Integral Coach Factory, Madras, manufactured indigenously 25 KV A.C. FMU stocks with imported electrical equipments 1967—Metre gauge in Madras was changed over to 25 KV A.C. system. 1967—HEIL Came into existence for manu- facturing Heavy Electrical Equipments indi- genously. 1967-69 Manufacture of 25 KV EMU stocks with HEIL electrical equipments. 1969 Manufacturefof indigenous EMU stock with HEIL electrical equipments by Jessop and Co. 1968—Igatpuri-Bhusawal was electrified on 25 KV A.C. system. Mars and Rahu sub-periods in Jupiter recor- ded another milestone where HEIL came into existence and assiSted the manufacturers of Loco and EMU stocks to become seli-depen- dent indigenously and a large extent of imported electrical equipment was waved off. Although this period was advanturous, the sub-period of Rahu, an intrinsic planet in the 8th position to Dasa lord, coupled with adverse transit of Saturn was indicative of some impendiment by way of accident or otherwise. 1969--Bombay Microwave established. October 1969—Kalyan Microwave exchange was established. 1970—Integral Coach Factory indigenously brought out the EMU stock with HEIL equip- ments. 1971—Indigenously manufactured locomotives started coming out with HEIL equipments, Subsequently indigenous locos were being manufactured on 1500 V D.C. system as well as on 25 KV A.C. system and also the locos for both A.C. and D.C. application with design factor by RDSO, Lucknow. 1969-72—In Five-Year Plan provision was made for electrification in the following sections which was subsequently carried out in phases, completed and extended: Virar-Sabarmati Panskara-Haldia Kirandal-Waltier Tondla~Delhi Madras-Vijayawada. exchange was Electric Traction—An Astrological Study 2 Suturn Mahadasa started from November 1968 onwards. Microwave (very high frequency) application was incorporated in the communi- cation system of Railways in 1969 with Japanese collaboration. Saturn is in Visakha and Jupi- ter rules over Akasha Tatwa while Saturn rules Vayu. Saturn is in exchange with Venus who is conjunct Mercury, the third lord: in addition to this the Integral Coach Factory manufactured (1500 V D.C.) EMU stock indigenously with HEIL elcetrical equips Indigenous pro- duction of locomotive with HEIL electrical equipments in 1971 recorded another mile-stone in the history of Locomotives. Beside these the progressive plans of trunk route electrification continued processing. Mercury sub-period in Saturn Dasa recorded the evolvement in the design of regenerative cum-dynamic theostatic breaking circuitry with or without separately excitation equipment arrangements for operation on Thull and Bhore ghats. Eatensive trials were conducted in this period which subsequentiy established. Mer- cury, the planet of inquisitiveness and learning, is friendly to Saturn, both well placed. though by lordship he is malesic Cor Aries Lagna. At the fag end of Mexeury sud-period the Railway Strike came in force (8-5-1974) and in Ketu sub-period Emergency was declared (1975). Kelu in conjunction with the Sun, the fifth lord in the fenth house and Mahadasa of tenth lord was operating. Besides this Saturn transit with Mars was ina mercurial sign Gemini through the third house and Keiu was passing over the Moon during strike aud Ketu and Saturn transits were continuing as above during decla- ration of Emergency. tn Navamsa, Saturn is iu debility in martian positive sign and Rahu-Ketu axis aillicting Mercury and Venus. However, Venus and Rahu are aspected by Jupiter. Venus sub-period started in Stjvember 1975 and brought in the following events 1977-—Change of Central Government. 197825 KV A.C. system was introduced in pent. Madras replacing: [500 V_ D.C. system of suburban. 11-3-1978—Introduction of EMU stock in Pune-Lonavala section. 212 From November 1978 onwards the Sun, the Moon and Mars sub-periods operated until July 1982. The Sun, the Moon and Mars are the enemies of Saturn and are placed in the fourth, eighth and seventh from, Saturn respectively. This coupled with the transit of: Saturn in the fourth and fifth from the Moon considering with the Saturn transit over the asterisms ruled by the above-said planets in Vimshottari Scheme. There. was also a total solar eclipse on 16th February 1980. It can be observed that the health of the Bombay Suburban Ser- vices on Central Railway suffered badly right from 1979-to 1982 by public agitation causing damage to the EMU stocks and accidents. In this period the powering electrical equip- ments had suffered and circumstantially appre- hended the Electric Traction to seek the assis- tance of electrical equipments from M/s Toyo Denki K.K. Japan as well as to establish the factory of traction motors at Nasik. There are some releaving features also during this period particularly in the Moon and Mars sub- periods. Rahu sub-period started in July 1982 ex- tending upto May 1985. On 8-8-1982 there was a fire accident at Kurla sub-station. The transit Saturn was at the end of Virgo with Rahu transit in Gemini, i.e., third and sixth houses from Lagna and second and fifth houses from the Moon. When Saturn entered Libra, the Bombay Suburban Services showed the marked progress in their health and im increase of trains to meet the challenge of the growing travelling commuters though intermittent prob- lems did continue, Rahu was transiting over the Moon. Jupiter was transiting through Scorpio and his own sign. Rabu friendly with Saturn was inthe 10th to the Dasa lord and Rahu’s dispositor exalted. This recorded the following progress June 1981—Reihote control centre at Bombay V.T. for substations. 6-12-1982—Diva-Bassein electrified section was opened for traffic. 15-12-1983—V.T.-Andheri suburban service started. The Astrological Magazine (Vol. 75, No. 2 1984--Delhi-Agra electrification completed and with further progress towards Jhansi, electrification of Vadodara-Godra section and Nagpur region, etc., are in hand. 24-10-1984—First_ underground — Railway inaugurated between Dumdum to Belghachi and extended from Esplanade to Bhawanifup on 1-11-1984. Prior to close of Rahu sub-period and Saturn exit of Libra and Rahu moving towards Aries brought in a derailment on 23-11-1984 at Byculla and collision of two suburban’ trains at Kandivili_ on 2-2-1985. The Dasa lord and sub-period lord were in close degree opposition with Mars being in close proximity to Venus. Another signification of nodes is their place- ment in the fourth and tenth axis indicative of bifurcation in the administrative structure and creation and addition of senior managerial position at the top level. While detailed infor- mation in this respect is not available, it is observed that such development did take place at the divisional level by creation of suburban Railway Managers’ posts. Summing up, Saturn Dasa not only main- tained the progress of indigenous manufacture, the fillup for which was given in Jupiter Dasa’ but also imparted its own qualities to the nature and the extent of progress. Saturn in astrology is for breaking conventions and does give enough when powerful put only after going through acid tests making one worthy of it. It is also indicative of some fruitless revenue investments. Mercury and Venus sub-periods in particular are indicative of raising of debt resources for development purpose. It is Saturn who brought Microwave application in communication system with tremendous deve- lopment thereafter. The iniplication of elecro« nic equipments in Electric Traction, the reno- vation and sophistication were the marked features of Saturn Dasa. Cutcutta Metro was inaugurated on 24-10~ 1984. The planetary positions in transit were not favourable as immediately Saturn and Ketu conjunction was to follow in watery sign (Conttmasd on pore 223) February 1986] How Jupiter in Aquarius Affects You ? 213 How Jupiter in Aquarius Affects You? PULIPPANS PROPOSE to outline the effects of the transit of Jupiter through Aquarius from various angles. I. General Effects “Jupiter enters Aquarius on 24-1-1986 at 5-46 p.m. (Lahiri’s Ayanamsa) and remains there upto 2-2-1987. We have filready defined in November 1980 issue of Tam ASTROLOGICAL MaGaziNE as to what is meant by Jovian year. The passage of Jupiter through Sravana, Danishta and Sata- bhisha is called Sravana and that through Poorvabhadrapada is called Bhadrapada. Varahamihira in his Brihat Samhita has given the following effects of the Jovian year Sravana. armad aa orag gett eemeafier | gam a greee: dread Aw ORTTT: Ih (8-12) In Sravana year people will be happy and crops will be abundant. The unorthodox and mean-minded people with their followers will meet with trouble and difficulties. (Jupiter passes through Dhanishta and Satabhisha from 241-1986 to 20-4~1986 and again from 22-10- 1986 to 25-11-1986.) Bhattotpala in his com- mentary has interpreted the word kshudra as krura meaning wicked, harsh people and for pakhanda he has given the meaning that the people who do not follow the path of Vedas (@@ HET) This may also mean those who do not follow the religious path. The passage of Jupiter through the star Poorvabhadrapada is known by the name Bhadrapada. This extends from 21-4-1986 to 21-10-1986 and again from 26-11-1986 to 1-2-1987). According to Varahamihira “In the Bhadrapada year of Jupiter green gram and the first crop of the year will be satisfactory, There will be no second crop. Food grains According to us Jupiter will be in Aquarius from 1986 to 1987. 9 will be plenty only in some places and there will be panic and danger in other parts. The ancient Tamil work Kiwmaraswamiyam states “Andhanan Saal Kalaiyil Anayil Samar’? which means when Jupiter passes through Aquarius and Capricorn there will be war in the world. At the same time, there is another significant astronomical phenomenon namely, the appearance of Halley ’s Comet in the heavens from December 1985 to March 1986. According to astronomical descriptions of the comet, it can be more or less classified as Roudra Ketu des ctibed by Varahamihira in Chapter 11 of verse 32 of his Brihat Samhita for which the results given are : Sredganee anf garg: eure eer arafa: anraferaer att te ef wars ger wa: (1132) This means that the comet Roudra Ketu rising in the east, the effects being similar to that of Swetha Ketu has a crest in the form of a trident. (In the case of Halley’s Comet, it does not seem to beso, however the rest of the descrip- tion resemble that given by Varahamihira.) Its flame, is grey, roiighand red. It traverses a third of the sky. Since the results will be simi- lar to that of Kapala Ketu, the following part of a verse giving the effects for the same should be noted: aaver afte “nat: which means that it produces famine, pestilence, drought and diseases. According to Parasara* “there will be danger duc to weapons (in the present day this may refer to nuclear weapons). It destroys one-third to half of the papulation of the world. Tt reduces the yield of (autumnal) crops. ‘There will be famine, lack of rain, drought and diseases”. In the same chapter Varahamihira declares that the effect of the comet will be felt for as saenaa defuse weet wareMT...... | Die many years as the months as it appears in the heaven. Presently, Halley’s Comet is supposed to be seen from November 27, 1985 to April- May 1986. Hence the bad effects may cuntinue for another four years and the seeds of another world war shooting out from some corner ot the other of the earth being laid is not ruled out, since, Kumaraswamiam gives the effect of shooting out of war during the passage of Jupi- ter through Aquarius. As war is doubly en- dorsed by our ancestors, the world government heads will do well to safeguard themselves from provocation leading to any outburst of such wars, to save mankind. HL. Individual Results, The transit results are to be judged mainly from (1) the general conventional aspect; (2) results according to Moorthi Nirnaya; and (3) results according to stellar occupation of a particular planet from one’s birth star. Now let us consider the three aspects. indiv dually : 1. The General Conventianal Aspect: Jupiter is said to give good results when he passes through the 2nd, the Sth, the 7th, the 9th and the IIth Rasis from one’s Janma Rasi (natal Moon). In other Rasis, he gives bad results. Though a planet is said to give bad resuits in many Rasis (the Ist, the 3rd, the 4th, the 6th, the 8th, the 10th and the 12th Rasis in the case of Jupiter) nobody need worry as the intensity of the evil effects will vary in the different houses, as ancient Tamil authors have selected ‘only one Rasi among these as suffering very much due to the transit of various planets. In the case of Jupiter : Viravu Guru Monridathun the portion of the Tamil verse, giving transit results for various planets. This means that Jupiter will give bad results only when he passes through the 3rd from one’s Janma Rasi and in other Rasis the evil effects will be tolerable. Accor- ding to this, people born in Sagittarius Rasi will have bad results this time. Added to this, the presence nf Saturn in the 12th house from the Janma Rasi, which is the first phase of sadesati (Saturn's seven-and-a half year period) will cause much more evil for the entire peried The Astrological Magazine [Vol. 75, No. 2 of Jupiter's stay in Aquarius as Saturn remains in Scorpio throughout. For actual results, the readers may refer to the monthly issues of the Magazine. However, the general results will be good—Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Capri corn; and bad—Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scor- pio, Sagittarius, Aquarius and Pisces. 2. Moorthi Nirnaya : This is a unique system of identifying good or bad results occurring due to planetary transits based on the position of the Moon in relation to various Rasis at the time of a planet's entry into a particular Rasi. According to this, when the Moon is in the Ist, the 6th and the Lith he is Swarnamoorthi (gold); the 2nd, the Sth and the 9th he is Rajatamoorthi (silver); the 3rd, the 7th and the 10th, he is Tambramoorthi (copper); and the 4th, the 8th and the 12th, he is Lohamoorthi (iron), all places being reckoned from one’s radical Moon Planets are said to give extremely good results as Swarnamoorthis, moderately good results as Rajatamoorthis, medium mixed results hs Tambramoorthis, and extremely bad results as Lohamoorthis. On the day of Jupiter’s entry into Aquarius on 241-1986 the Moon will be in Gemini in Aridra. —Jupiter’s Moorthi Nirnaya will be as follows for various Rasis at this time: 1. Gemini, Leo and Capricorn—Swarna- moorthi (Nery good). 2. Taurus, Libra and Aquarius—Rajara- moorthi (good). 3. Aries, Virgo and Sagittarius—Thambra- moorthi (mixed) Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces—Lohamoorthi (bad). _ Effects as per general aspect and Moorthi Nirnaya of Jupiter’s teansit’ through Aquarius for the various Rasis can be tabulated as under : 1. Rasis having good results according to the general rule—Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra and Capricorn. 2, Rasis having bad results according to the general rule—Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Aquarius and Pisces. 3. Rasis having very good results according Moorthi Nirnaya—Gemini, Leo and Capricorn— Swarnamoorthi. February 1986] 4. Rasis having good results according to special rule—Taprus, Libra, Aquarius—Rajata- moorthi. 5. Rasis hawing mixed results according to special rile—Aries, Virgo, Sagittarius—Tambra- moorthi. 6. Rasis having bad results according Co the special rule—Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces— Lohamoorthi- 7. Rasis having very good results according to both the rules—Gemini, Leo and Capricorn, 8. Rasis having very bad results according to both the rules—Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Taking the quantum of full beneficial effect of the transit of Jupiter as 0.5 and that of Saturn as 0.5, i-e., considering the beneficial transit value of both the major planets as one unit, I have quantified the net beneficial effect due to the transit of both the major planets for al] the 12 Rasis in tabular form How Jupiter in Aquarius Affects You? 215 ‘The presence of Saturn in Scorpio will modify the results as under: Gemini and Capricorn people will have extremely good results as both the major planets Saturn and Jupiter will be in good positions for this time. 1. Gemini—Jupiter in the 9th and Saturn in the 6th, both will be Swarnamoorthis giving very good results. 2. Capricorn—Jupiter in the 2nd and Saturn in the 11th, both will be Swarnamoorthis giving very good results. Scorpio and Sagittarius people, will have more or less bad results this time as both the major planets Saturn and Jupiter will be in un- favourable positions as shown belo 1. Scorpio—Jupiter in the 4th and Saturn in the Ist. 2. Sagittarius—Jupiter in the 3rd and Saturn in the 12th. Hence, those born in this Rasi will also have a bad time during 1986 as they will be suffering due to ashtama Sani (transit Saturn in {the 8th from radical Moon). HI. Stellar Positions of Transit Results The third way of identifying transit results are by the stellar positions of planets reckoned from, one’s Janma Nakshatra. The 27 stars make up three paryayas (cycles) of {nine “stars each. A particular planet may be im any one of these stars reckoned from the birth star, i.e., in any one of the three cycles. The nine stars, are named Janma, Sampat, Vipat, Kshema, Prat- yak, Sadhana, Naidhana, Mitra and Parama Mitra. These names themselves convey the nature of results of occupation of a planet in a particular star., Planets in Janma, Vipat, Prat- The Astrological Magazine [Vol. 75, No. 2 yak and Naidhana stars accordingly give bad results and others, good results. The results will be very bad in the case of Naidhana (vadha) stars. Ihave given in tabular form the transit, periods of Jupiter through the three stars of each cycle for births under each of the 27 stars. 1. From the table it will be evident that those born, under Pushya, Anuradha and Uttarabhadra- pada will have bad results during the passage of Jupiter inthe 7th star (Naidhana) Dhanishta, from 24-1~1986 to 1-2-1987. 2. Those born under Aslesha, Jyeshta and Revati will have bad results during passage of Jupiter in the 7th star Satabhisha from 22-2- 1986 to 204-1986 and again from 22-10-1986 to 25-11-1986. 3. Those born under Aswinti, Makha and Moola stars will have bad results during passage of Jupiter in the 7th star Poorvabhadrapada from 21-4-1986 to 21-10-1986 and again from 26-11-1986 to 2-2-1986. The table is produced below. Jyeshta people will have very bad effects from 22-2-1986 to 20-4-1986, again from 22-10-1986 to 25-11-1986 due to transit of Jupiter through their 7th star and Saturn through their Janma Rasi respectively. To sum up, people born under the remaining 25 stars will not suffer very much, and few among them wiil have from moderately good time to very good time as the case may be wide chart tabulated above). Remedial Measures The worst sufferers enlisted under the transit of Jupiter through their Naidhanatara (7th star from birth star) should undertake remedial measures during the respective periods shown. However, Pushya and its three janma star born people need not perform any remedial measures during Naidhana transit as the period will be less than a month for the passage of Jupiter through Dhanishta. People born under Scorpio and Sagittarius Rasis have to undertake remedial measures both for Jupiter and Saturn as they will also be affected adversely by the transit. To facilitate easy reference their longitudinal durations are given in the Nirayana Scale in the Table. Some astrological works give different timings for the malignant and benignant parts. ‘Mrigasira, Swati, Visakha and Uttarashadha have no benignant parts according to some writers. 8. For example if the natal star is the 2nd quarter of Aswini the 88th quarter will be the first quarter of Dhanishta. ». Aswini, Bharani, Swati, Visakha, Anu- radha, Jyeshta, Moola, Sravana and Sata- bhisha have been described as evil stars. We have to question the authority by which such benign asterisms like Aswini, Anuradha, etc., have been classified as evil ones. We may quote numerous authorities wherein those stars are termed quite auspicious rather the most desirable for certain Samskaras. Regarding Anuradha Brihat Samhita says: agaiiorrer faon Aenteaafa fiend 1! arafafeaensan sins Ay s fertfr It is good for several undertakings. You have clearly said. in Planetary Letters to the Editor 221 the Editor Influences on Human Affairs (Chapter IX): “Can Astrology predict Earthquakes 2” that ‘‘an Eclipse falling at quadrants to Jupiter,{Saturn or Mars, also produces earthquakes. The area’ of occurrence is generally indi- cated by the zodiacal sign in which the above combi- nations occur or by the sign which has the conjunction oF the eclipse on the meridian or the nadir. The locality isalso indicated in places where Jupiter, is in the meridian”, On the day of the eclipse (12-11-1985) the Moon was ia Libra and Jupiter in Capricorn was in a quadrant from the Moon. The sign of eclipse Libra was hemmed in b&iween malefics Saturn and Mars who were transiting Scorpio and Virgo respectively resulting in a powerful Papakartari Yoga. So the earthquake was sure to como in Columbia by applying the formula, given to us by Dr. B. Vy. Raman. I basten to add that the eclipse was seen in the States but not in India, or her neighbouring countries. Such writings of Dr. B. V. Raman must be made compulsory for the students of Geology. Application of many such rules can save thousands of lives and billions of rupees. Lucknow. Mridula Trivedie u Sir,—Past history reveals that the predictions of such @ natural calamity, as the recent earthquake in Mexico, have hardly been made either by seismologists, geophysicists and astrologers, t00, well in advance. Of course, there are solitary instances and efforts in this respect. However, two Indian scientists, viz., Mr. Arun ‘Bapat of Pune and Mr. Agrawal of U.P. are said to have been successful in judging the probable date and place of varihguake. in July,,1984, 1 attended the World Con ference on Earthquake Engineering held at San Francisco (U.S.A), wherein 1 submitted a paper which showed the relationship between eclipses’ and major planetary con Junctions and natural calamities including earthquakes. ‘The major arthquakes in Japan and U.S.A, were studied carefully and while concluding the discussion had indicated therein that an earthquake would take place in U.S.A. in Scptember and November 1985 owing to earlier eclipses of 1985. I did not, therefore, wonder when I read the news of the major earthquake in Mexico. In 1976, between February 3rd and 10th, there was an ‘earthquake at Gautemala near Mexico city. According to Sepharial’s geodetic equivalent, the ascendant comes to the 17th degree of Virgo and the 18th degree of Gemini in meridian cusp. ‘The capital city of Mexico is ‘on Long, 90 W 30 and Lat. 14 N, 54. In Novernber 1975, 222 there were two annual eclipses in Scorpio and Taurus. They could be considered as responsible for the event. The present earthquake took place after 9 years, | Tt has much significance to the eclipses that oceurred in the same degrees of the same signs. As per astrological principles Rahu completes its rotation in 12 solar signs in 18 years. It means by the end of the 9th year it enters the opposite sign. In 1985, the lunar-solar eclip- ses were on May 4 and May 19 in Scorpio 14 and Taurus 28, respectively. Again similar eclipses took place on October 28 and Navernber 12, 1983 in Taurus 5 and Scorpio 20, respectively. Both these suggest that the range of the repetition of earthquake in November in the neighbouring area could be ruled out. Due to occurrence of two earthquakes within a period of 9 years, another important aspect was observed. The solar sign Scorpio has much significance to Mexico. In 1976, Harschel was in the 7th degree. In 1985, Pluto was 4n Scorpio 2 degrees and Saturn in 22 degrées in the same sign, It shows that either 3 to 6 or 22 to 25 degrees of Scorpio are most sensitive for Mexico, and its capital city. If the above theory is made applicable, it would not be out of place if I predict that the carthquake of a sir lar intensity may once again overtake Mexico in 1993 and 1994, In that year the solar eclipse of November 1993 takes place in Scorpio 21 and the other two of 1994 in Taurus 11 and Scorpio 11, on May 10 and Octo- ber 1994, respectively. Besides, Pluto the planet of more devastating nature than Saturn and Mars, will also bbe in Scorpio 25-26 degrees and;Satuen willdbe in square to it, The probable months will be November 1993, March, June and November 1994, In 1983 Japanese experts felt that there would be an earthquake in their land aul the Government fully equip- ped itself to face such a calamity. But nothing of that sort occurred. But 1 do not wish to ridicule the scientists, The event which was anticipated by Japanese scientists in 1983 (September-October) is likely to take place by the end of 1985 or early 1986, or before Novern- ber 1986. Pure, 5. K. Kelkar. The Ashta Mangala Prasna’ which was hitherto known only to traditional Keralite scholars has been made open to one and all. Its new vistas into various elements of astrology such as remedial measures based on Karma Vipaka, inter- pretation of Dasa-Bhukti based on Ashtakavarga, time of marriage early or late, compatibility, determination of longevity, etc., are not to be found anywhere sls. Indeed it isa composite all-in-one work. ‘But the reviewer was not dispassionate in that he has not mentioned the incompleteness of the volume without the original text. In this context, 1 would like to mention that {am proud to possess the volumes of our revered author and Infact I owe very much my knowledge in astrology to his book Hinds Predictive Astrology which I refer even today, though I have mastered Sanskrit and widely read all the standard texts in Sanskrit in Astrology. 56. I started learning astrology at 23. The revered author's view that most of the educated persons who read the book are not acquainted with ‘skrit’; 1am afraid, is far from truth. Nowadays all the standard texts are available with text and translac tion and by the time the person gets into such advanced books naturally he becomes conversant also. It is @ fact that no beginner will be reading such a. voluminous advanced book but as I have explained students will haturally possess some knowledge of Sanskrit. "If the text had been available it would have been useful for quoting and for alternative interpretations. Having the first volune with text and the second without leaves behind a feel of dissatisfaction, Hence | would very much request you to bring out the Sanskrit text for the second volume early. All views of the universe, from the days when man became Conscious of the heavens to the present period, may be Tam now (Continued on pope 229) February 1986] ELECTRIC TRACTION—AN ASTROLOGICAL STUDY (Conttred from page 212) Scorpio and watery Navamsa of Cancer istindi- cative of initial problems for stabilised smooth operation. Jupiter sub-period extends from May 1985 to November 1987. During most of this period it will be transiting ‘the Dasa lord’s signs in the visible hemisphere and in favourable disposi- tion towards the Moon. In the closing period, the Dasa lord will be transiting over Jupiter’s sign while. Jupiter will be transiting his own sign. The sub-period therefore promises fulfil- ment of plans and programmes already under- taken as also initiation of some new plans and programmes for spill-over in Mercury Dasa. Jupiter also promises innovative developments in the field of Electric Traction, emphasis on administrative implemention aspects and favour- able policy framework with sufficient scope for decentralisation. There is however somewhat darker aspect as well. The adverse development will be brought out primarily because of Saturn's and Rahu’s transits in unfavourable houses and martian signs. The period to be watched in this aspect, is that of the transit of Jupiter through Aquarius till Rahu leaves Aries, i.e, from February to September 1986. Mercury’s major period starts from Novem- ber 1987. Mercury lord of the third and sixth houses is associated with Venus, the Sun and Ketu. He, however, is the 2nd and the 5th lord from the Moon and being Vargottama placed in the 9th house from the Moon and the 10th house from Lagna, It is in Uttarashadha asterism. His dispositor is exalted with digbala in the kendra, the 10th from its position. Mercury period promises significant improve- ments in Railway economy for expansion and diversification although checked to some extent by temporary adverse transits and some of the sub-periods. Exports of Electric Traction equip- ment and components will receive a boost. There will be a rise in turnkey export contract There will be attempts at significant technical innovations which are however likely to face Electric Traction—An Astrological Study 223 teething or other impediments. Ultimate success however is ensured. Operational effi- ciency will receive greater attention. The ex- pansion in Electric Traction and promotion avenue to the staff are strongly indicated. The Electric Traction arm of the Railway is likely to eclipse all other wings of the Railways as the Mercury Dasa progresses. Policy-makers will pay Barticular attention to this wing. These developments together with certain weaknesses of the chart show a greater need for synchronous planning and effective implemen- tation. The energy sector is likely to present much greater challenges in future on account of Mercury's disposition in Uttarashadha and the Sun’s affliction by Ketu. Saturnian transits in this period in particular need to be watched. Effort will have to be made to explore alterna tive sources of energy as also for captive plants for energy generation and optimum energy saving in operations. This short article has made a modest attempt to cover almost a span of eighty years to provide a bird’s eye-view of the developments. The main purpose of this article is however to focus attention on the utility of astrology as an effec- tive management tool in planning and develop ment of Electric Traction. The interpretations provided here show the vision of the scholars and savants of astrology who framed the basic rules and cannons. The changing times and modernisations of social life and technical disciplines cast a special responsibility on the current students of astrolozy for carrying out further research to make old astrology a practi- cal science even in modern times. The readets, must however bear in mind, the modesty and humility of old seers and masters of astrology. ‘They have emphasised it as only indicative of coming events and tried to use it only as an aid indecision making. It is not a substitute for decision-making. 34.85. Inspite of good disposition of the 7th house and its lord and karaka Venus (not combust) in own house, in the Ind with exalted Navamsa (and exalted{Rahu), why has marriage been denied to the native so far ? Balakrishnan, Bangalore. Ans. The fourth is the house of family life. It is occupied by Saturn who is known to be a delaying planet. He is a badhaka and vitiated by Mandi. The Moon is his dispositor and his period is;running. All these have contributed to the delay. When a planet rules two houses and occupies one, he forgets the other. Hence Venus forgets his iulership of the .7th with reference to which he occupies the 8th which i$ unhelpful and hence could not effect his marriage during his sub-period. The Sun being the SthIord, he is in a better position to bring about the happy event during his sub- period. Incidentally the Mars-Jupiter axis along 1/7 is psychologically unwelcome. Q. 2. (b) Some say that the Moon in the 8th house in Capricorn and Mars in Lagna are bad. Howe far will it apply here since the Moon is in the 8th between Ketu (its house of exaltation) and Saturn (own house, Bhagyasthana and house of Moolatrikona).? Rama Rao Patnaik, Jatni, Dt. Puri. Ans. (a) Since lord of the 7th Jupiter is near the Ascendant in friendly place. early marriage is indicated. The combination of Venus, Rabu, Mars and Ketu is however rather abrasive in married life, but'Jupiter’s aspect to the 7th will overcome it. (6) Mars in Lagna in the com- pany of Venus is bad for marriage, but the Moon is full in the 8th which contributes to longevity. Mars’ aspect to the Moon however is adverse for mother, wealth, etc. Saturn in the 9th is excellent. It will overcome all short comings in the horoscope. Q. 3. I do not have the Ephemeris with me and so 1 shall work ont the tithi, from the figures given by you. Long. of the Moon 104° 24! (a) Long. of the Sun 112° 47° (6) Since (6) isgreater than (a) we must add 360° to (a) and subtract (6) from it. ‘Thus (a) becomies 360° 004104° 247 or 464° 24? Subtracting (6) from 112° 47/ it 351° 37 Since this is more than 180°, it is Krishna Paksha. Dividing it by 12, we get: 351 377+ 12.=29° 18/ or 15th or Amavasya. (6) When the Sun’s logitude is 152° 20/, it means it has left Leo (at 30° per sign) and progressed 2° 20/ in Virgo. If you want to know when it entered Virgo, see in the Ephemeris for the Sun’s longi- tudes on those two days when it was a little less and little more than 150°. Since ephemerides usually give longitudes for GMT 0 hr or 5~30 IST, find out the actual time by the Rule of Three from the daily motion between those two longitudes and 150°. Usually ephemerides give the time of entry of planets in the signs. Q. 4. Rasi: Ascendant 174-12; the Moon 22-35; the Sun 249-55 ; Mars 168-12 ; Mercury 235-26; Jupiter (R) 100-48; Venus 260-45 ; Saturn 331-39; Rahu 21-50. Birth 00-53 a.m. on 24-12-1966, 22.N 25 and 14 E52. Balance of Verus Dasa at birth ; 6 years, 1 month and 15 days. (a) Can the Moon-Mercury period with Raku transiting Aries prove fatal? (b) Does the position of the Sun and Saturn in angles give 20 years of life only. B.V. Ramana Rao, Bhilai. Ans. (a) Longevity is a question no one has successfully solved. In the present case the planetary configurations are sufficiently bright. The mutual exchange between the lords of | and3and Land& are two of the worst yogas. So is the mutual aspect between Saturn and Mars, which is a health hazard where they are. And the Moon-Mercury at 8/6 is sufficiently provocative. (6) Saturn’s affliction of Lagna and the Sua too are sufficiently destructive. Jupiter being a benefic kendra lord is unhelpful so far as longevity is concerned. Difficulties Solved 225 Q. 5. Rasi: Aries—Ascendant ; Taurus— the Moon ; Leo—Ketu ; Virga—Saturn ; Libra~ Mars; Sagittarius—Venus ; Capricorn—the Sun and Mercury; Aquarius—Ketu ; and Pisces— Jupiter. Mandi at 23°. Navamsa: Aries— Mercury; Gemini—Ketu; Cancer—Ascendant, the Sun and Saturn : Virgo—Venus ; Sagittarit Ketu ; Capricorn—Jupiter ; Aquarius—Mars and ‘Mandi ; and Pisces the Moon. The *Sun’s Dasa balance is 9 months 20 days. Does the 10th lord from the Moon viz., Saturn in the Sth give a career “in the occult subjects or will the Sun and Mercury in the 10th from Lagna turn it towards education ? Sudarshan Adat, Hubli. Ans, Between Lagna and Chandra Lagna, the former is stronger because Mars, Lagna lord, aspects it whereas Venus, linear Lagna lord occupies the 8th from it. Consequently the 10th from Lagna will have mere say. The Sun and Mercury there confer Nipuna Yoga. Again, the Moon, the 4th lord (education), occupies the 2nd. Hence money through education is the better choice. Q. 6. Rasi: Libra—Ascendant 20-49-08 and Saturn 29-22-32; Sagittarius ~Rahu (R) 10-15-22 ; Capricora—Venus 09-14-11 and Mer- cury 25-59-58; Aquarius—the Sun 22-17-03 ; Aries—Mars 13-19-03 ; Gemini—Jupiter (R) 28- 19-12, and Ketu (R) 10-18-22. Major period operating at present—Venus ; sub- period of Mars till 29-1-1986. Does the chart indicate high academic pursuits overseas ? H. Kalita, Gawhati. Ans. The 4th house indicates education. Its occupation by Venus and Mercury is a good augury for its pursuit. The 4th lord Saturn occupies the 9th in the company of Jupiter which suggests overseas studies. And what better period can you imagine than Lagna lord Venus so happily placed? The present sub- period. is Mars’, the 4th ford from Dhana-lord Whi¢h again is a propitious indication. @. 7. The astrological reason for the delay in marriage and timing of the event may be dis- cussed.
