Lesson Components:

Phase I: I will introduce the concept of community with the students and open the
floor for what they think it means to them. I will give a brief 5 minutes for raised
hands and ideas to be considered and wrote down on the board for display.

Phase II: I will then reveal the photo of the honeybee hive and I will ask the students
how many bees do they think live there? I will give 5 minutes for open discussion
amongst the class to ask questions and explore the nest. Then we will discuss the
different dynamics that go into the beehive they see on the photo and how a
community is similar.

Phase III: What makes up a community in a honeybee hive:

worker bees, drones, and of course a queen. We will discuss the
roles of each; the worker bees work together in building the nest
and collecting food for there community. Drones are the male
bees who are typically in charge of aiding in populating the
beehive. The queen is responsible for producing pheromones that holds the hive
together as well as reproduction of more bees.
Phase IIII: I will then tell the students that we are going to get prepared to break up
into groups of 4 based the desk that are closest to each other. The students will
assist in pushing there desk together in their groups. I will then pass out the list of
community ideas they can choose from listing fish, zebras, elephants, monkeys,
ducks, bees, and ants. Once chosen I will allow the students to pick one group
leader to go around and get supplies based on the community idea they chose and
get to working on their communities.
