Creativity Chart: Charlotte Baum

Grade Level: 7th Grade
Age Range: 11-13
1. Creative Space
a. Art Corner!
b. A creative art corner will help contribute to the child’s observation and literal
creativity skills. It doesn’t always need to be the Mona Lisa. There might be
multiple forms of artistic things so that a child can work in peace and achieve
something in this space. There are also no boundaries to the space, it would be
very open to change and maybe a place of comfort for some students.
2. Keep it Simple
a. Wake Up Games!
b. When kids get distracted from class or lose focus because of social factors, I
would bring their attention back with games like Would You Rather. I would have
them create their own Would You Rathers and then they could announce them. I
would get the whole class involved by having two sides of the classroom, one
being one of the WYR and then the other side. It would be helpful to get their
attention back while still having fun!
3. Free Time
a. Controlled Freetime?
b. I would have time set aside for my class to use their free time outside. Personally,
I would give it as a reward to help keep them on task in class because they are
wild. Berk supported the idea of a supervised free time because middle school
aged children are wild. I wouldn’t necessarily plan a specific activity but allow
them to do what they felt needed to be done. Not all of them want to play outside
so giving them options will create a more inclusive and comfortable space for
everyone.
4. Sense Activation
a. Online Museums
b. Museums all across America have “virtual tours”. In class, maybe as a reward or
if we are focused on a certain subject, we could take some virtual tours to open
students mind’s about various cultures! It would help contribute partially to their
metalinguistic awareness because they would be exposed to many historical
events that include various groups.
5. Discuss Creativity
a. Creative Corner Reflections?
b. Students could write about their experiences in the creative corner! I think this
would help them develop better diction and vocabulary skills because they have to
put their imaginative thoughts into words.
6. Critical Thinking
a. Bad Behavior
2

b. Students who act out or disrespect their classmates could be asked to list: what
they have done, how it may have affected others, what they would do differently
next time and what the result would have been had they done it that way the first
time. This would also contribute to students reading and writing skills because
they have to write it out. It would benefit critical thinking skills because they
would have to consider the outcomes and devise how to get the outcome they
should have gotten the first time. Also it makes them consider what they’ve done.
7. Avoid Managing
a. Facilitating
b. As a teacher, it would be better to be a facilitator rather than a manager.
Considering that, I would have my students participate in games that seem to have
no direction but really do. This type of team work would help students collaborate
with each other much more effectively because of rules like time limits,
blindfolds, or even no talking. Those social communication skills will also help be
more inclusive because these types of games are for team building and it’s
important to accept everyone’s input in team situations.
i. EX: Blindfold Partners, one student has to trust the other to walk them
places with a blind fold on.
8. Pursue Passions
a. Set Goals
b. Setting Goals at the beginning of the school year will help contribute to the
child’s achievements and self confidences. We would set a small, short term goal
and then long term goals. Just having these ideas in their heads will benefit their
self confidence, especially at this age. Also to include an intellectual pursuit of
passion, I would have a huge bookcase with a ton of books. Then, on the first day,
I would have them choose a book that interests them the most. That would help
me to understand what they are truly passionate about, along with their goals.
9. My Passion
a. My Classroom
b. My personality radiates the things that I am passionate about. I would decorate
my classroom to help emphasize those things (along with subject materials lol).
At this age too I would want to make it clear that everyone is important and
accepted. There would be strict rules about bullying because self image is
everything at this age.
