IE533-Assignment # 1 (10%) – Spring 2021

Due Date: 6/4/2021 before 11:59 pm.

Show your work (formulas used and calculations) clearly. No grade for final answers only.

No software solution is allowed

You can work alone or a group of two only (No more)

Note that neatness and format will contribute 5 points to the total score. Use the cover on Moodle

Question 1. (20 points) Consider the following figures for residuals analysis from different
studies. Comment on each one.

Residual vs run order

Question 2. (45 points) An industrial engineer wishes to test the effect of four chemical agents on
the strength of a particular type of cloth. Because there might be variability from one bolt to
another, the chemist decides to use a randomized block design, with the bolts of cloth considered
as blocks. She selects five bolts and applies all four chemicals in random order to each bolt. The
resulting tensile strengths follow. Analyze the data from this experiment (use  = 0.05) and draw
appropriate conclusions. The data are as follows: replace x with the last two digit of your student
id (For example if your id is 12345, then x is 45)Use α=0.05.

bolt

Chemical 1 2 3 4

1 8 4 5 6

2 14 5 6 9

3 14 6 9 2

4 x 9 3 6

Solve the following questions (No software plot or solution):

a) (20 points) Prepare ANOVA showing all calculation
b) (5 points) Is there any significant factor? Explain?
c) (10 points) Plot the residual plots vs predicted, comment on the figure
d) (10 points) Plot the residual plots vs order, comment on the figure

Question 3. (10 points)

Explain the reason behind dividing the mean square for any factor in ANOVA table by the mean
square error to calculate Fo.
Question 4. (20 points)
Fill this table with true or False. Exlain your answer if it is true why and if false why?

1. True / False If F value is 1.1 in ANOVA table, we fail to reject the null hypothesis.
2. True / False If P-Value is smaller than 0.05 in ANOVA table, you can write “It’s
significance”.
3. True / False If the sample means of the treatments are equal, then 𝐹 value should be
close to 0 (zero).
4. True / False The sum of squares for error indicates the variability between the treatment
means.
