Each one of us have dreams to fulfill and goals to achieve but sometimes our failures and

disappointments will unexpectedly come crashing leaving us in doubt of ourselves and our abilities. Day
by day we are challenged by life. Sometimes we lose hope so we are left with no other choice but to give
up. However, the movie “Patch Adams” made me realize that giving up should never be in our option. It
shows that dealing with life , in general, needs a little understanding, compassion and optimism in order
for us to reach, not just our goals but, something more than what we are dreaming of.

Many times people, mostly relatives, have questioned my decision in choosing nursing as a
career. They say that nursing is hard and that nurses face myriad of issues such as working for long
hours under a minimum salary but this does not stop me in my pursuit of this calling. I remember being
admitted to hospitals whenever I get sick and so, I’ve been exposed many times to the environment of
hospitals. I also remember the feeling of comfort that I experience whenever I interact with nurses and
because of that I have realized that I too must provide that same healing comfort to those who are in
need. The movie “Patch Adams” shows how passionate and dedicated Patch Adams is to his goal which
is to provide healthcare by bringing smiles and laughter to patients. He is someone who you can look up
to. He dreamt of becoming a doctor and, his goal is not to have that “M.D” after his name but, to
provide healthcare especially to those who cannot afford hospital charges. The unique thing about Patch
Adams is that he believes that laughter is indeed the best medicine and so he brings not just medicines
but joy to the patients.

The movie motivated me by showing the real essence of helping people. It is beyond the
medication you provide the patients and I believe that as a future nurse it is my duty to bring comfort
and healthcare which is beyond physical but a care who will touch the spirit of the patient. Patch Adams
reflects my affinity of taking care of the sick because I wanted to serve people by providing them with
the healthcare that they need. I believe that being hands-on with the patient and building relationships
while helping them improve their health is something that I foresee will bring satisfaction and joy to me
that is why nursing chose me.
