Lesson: Addition Strategies – Commutative Properties – Turn Arounds.

Date: Tuesday March 30, 2021

Rick Simms

Lesson Objectives (What do you want students to do? What do you want them to take from it?
● Students will practice the concept of commutative properties – the order of the numbers in addition equations still equal the same sum.
● Through practice using dominoes & writing the equations in two ways, they will understand that the order doesn’t change the sum.

Learning Activities Differentiation (What are the needs of the

class? How will you scaffold for those needs?)
Introduction:
Multiple physical demonstrations.
Brief discussion about order of numbers in an equation. Have 1 student come to the front and Short video to reinforce concept.

Resources/Materials: Assessment (How will you assess students? How will you provide them with feedback on
how they are doing? What, if any, assessment tools will you use?)

Outcomes:
Dominoes N10A – Strategies for Addition facts up to 18
• I can show an understanding and apply strategies for addition facts to 18
Pencils.
Formative:

Student Observations, Individual Student check-ins during independent work.

Ask students how they are solving the problem and take notes. Indicate student’s level of
understanding using the rating scale below: (using manipulatives dominoes for commutative
properties – turnarounds)
○ MAS - Able to demonstrate and explain the process of addition accurately and
thoroughly with numbers to 20.
○ ADV - Able to demonstrate and explain the process of addition accurately with
some detail with numbers to 20.
○ PRG - Able to demonstrate and explain the process of addition accurately with
numbers to 10. May be able to use numbers to 20.
○ EMG - Able to demonstrate and explain the process of addition. May not
always be accurate. Needs support with larger numbers.
○ BEG - With support is able to demonstrate the process of addition.
○ LIM - Is not yet able to demonstrate the process of addition.

Summative: Collect math journals for assessment.

Teacher Reflections: Everyone loved the physical activity demonstrations. I feel that it was a great way to reinforce
the concept. I of course hammed it up to make it super energetic and over the top fun. This
also allowed those learners that needed extra help to see it in another way prior to the hands-
on practice. Having the manipulatives of the dominoes also was a great visual for some. Visual
representation of the video was an additional differentiation strategy that helps those that need
extra support.
Be careful of getting the energy too high. It was wee bit challenging to get them back on task…
my forever challenge, being super exciting yet still hoping they will be able to regulate and get
back to work…
