Traits of technical writing
 Accuracy
Accuracy refers to the truthfulness and the variety of a given statement. This brochure is accurate to
getting the facts straight and there are no grammatical mistakes in this brochure.

Example

If you have been in contact with the person who has COVID-19, within 14 days you will develop cough,
fever or shortness of breath.

 Accessibility
It means the ease by which the readers can locate the information they seek. To make the brochure
accessible the writer has used headings, subheadings, bullets, different font styles and font sizes,
graphics and bolding the important messages.

 Conciseness
Technical writing is supposed to be clear, so the writer has conveyed his message in the shortest way
possible so the reader keeps reading till the last line. He avoided the use of meaningless and absurd
phrases and words.

Example

People can catch COVID-19 from others who have the virus through inhaling small droplets from
infected people who cough or sneeze or through touching contaminated surfaces and then touching
nose, eyes or mouth.

 Clarity
A tech writing document needs to have a single reading that the reader can understand. The writer has
achieved clarity in brochure by using familiar words and making effective sentences also he used active
voice for making of the sentences.

Example

Most people who become infected experience mild illness and recover, but for some it can be more
severe.

 Audience recognition
This aspect is based around the audience, and how well they understand the writing. In this brochure
the writer is involving audience as this has to be read by different audiences so he used the tone for
multiple people, and the use of simple and familiar words makes easy for everyone to understand this
brochure.

Avoid close contact with sick people especially people who are coughing and sneezing.
Seven C’s of communication
 Clarity
This brochure contains simple and familiar words that any audience can easily understand. The writer
has minimized the number of ideas in each sentence to make sure that the reader has the information
they need to take action.

Example

Stay at home and do not go to school or work.

 Concise
In this brochure the writer has make sure that he sticks to the point and keep it brief. This brochure
does not contain any useless or meaningless words or phrases to make the reader read six sentences
when the writer can communicate the message in three.

Example

Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth without washing your hands.

 Concrete
This brochure contains concrete message so the audience has a clear picture of what the writer is
telling them. There are details and vivid facts, and there is laser-like focus. It means the message in this
brochure is solid.

Example

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more
severe disease. COVID-19 is the infectious disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

 Correct
This brochure has correct communication so it fits all the kinds of audience. The correct communication
is also the error-free communication.

Example

The areas with the risk of exposure to COVID-19 are those where there are many extensive chains of
infection. These may change as the situation develops. For the latest lost, check the official national
websites.

 Coherent
This communication of writer with the readers is coherent, its logical. All the points are connected and
relevant to the main topic and the tone and flow of the text is consistent.
Example

Stay informed. Check regularly the information from local health authorities. This is the last line of the
document and it is relevant to the main topic and the whole text is consistent.

 Complete
This brochure has a complete message, the audience has everything they need to be informed and take
action. It has all the aspects related to coronavirus.

Example

Writer has mentioned the symptoms of the virus and has informed us with the precautions and
persuaded us to take some steps to prevent it.

 Courteous
Courteous communication is friendly, open and honest. In this text there are no hidden insults or
passive-aggressive tones. The writer has kept the reader’s viewpoint in mind and he is empathetic to
their needs.

Example

Avoid close contact with sick people especially the people who are coughing or sneezing. The writer has
not used any aggressive tone.
