After studying the section on the philosophy of maternal and child health nursing, write a
brief report discussing your own personal philosophy as a nurse caring for mothers and their
children. Be sure to consider how maternal and child health nursing is family-centered,
community-centered, evidence-based, and challenging.

The primary role of Maternal and Child nursing can be stated simply as the promotion and
maintenance of optimal family health to ensure cycles of optimal childbearing and childrearing.
It encompasses different areas for the holistic care for the mother and child. Based on what I
learned, there are many philosophical approach that can be related on maternal and child
health nursing. In terms of my own personal philosophy as a nurse, maternal and child nursing
can be family-centered, evidence-based and challenging. It is family-centered because the care
is not only focused to one person but to the family as a whole. It is a cycle on which it focuses
on the care for healthy families. It starts during pregnancy, on which maternal care should be
prioritized. If there will be healthy mothers, then there will be also healthy infants. Then,
healthy infants will grow as healthy children. During this time, we should make sure that
children grow up happy and healthy. If we have healthy children, they will also become healthy
adolescents, healthy adults, and the cycle goes on and on. Maternal and child nursing can also
be community-centered. It is said that the family is considered to be a small unit of the
community. If all of the families are healthy, then we have a healthy community. The health of
the family influences the health of communities that’s why in order to achieve healthy families,
we should also consider the community as our scope of care. Maternal and Child Health
Nursing is also evidence-based. Evidence-based practice means that the process of collecting,
processing, and implementing research findings, improve clinical practice, the work
environment, or patient outcomes. This means that the clinical interventions that we practice
have scientific proof, or by experience improving the outcome of care for the client. Maternal
and Child health nursing is indeed challenging. Challenging by the fact that it is indeed one of
the most important parts in the nursing field because it encompasses the health from the 2
individuals, the mother and child, to the family as a whole. We care for clients from infants, to
adults until the time that they themselves will also become parents and have offspring in their
own.
