Exercise 5 : Measurements

Name : Delbert C.L Date : 25/08/2020

1. Read the following Vernier caliper measurements.

Main scale : 1 cm

vernier scale : 0.05 cm

Final reading : 1 + 0.05 = 1.05 cm

(a)
Main scale : 3.30 cm

vernier scale : 0.04 cm

Final reading : 3.30 + 0.04 = 3.34 cm

(b)
Main scale : 6.70 cm

Nonius scale : 0.05 cm

Final reading : 6.70 + 0.05 = 6.75 cm

(c)

2. A vernier caliper is used to measure the diameter of two pipes. The reading with the pipe in
position is shown in diagram. What is the difference in diameter of two pipes?

Main scale : 2.30 cm Main scale : 2.20 cm

Vernier scale : 0.01 cm Vernier scale : 0.04 cm

Final reading : 2.30+0.01 = 2.31 cm Final reading : 2.20 + 0.04 = 2.24 cm

The difference in diameter : 2.31 cm-2.24 = 0.07 cm

3. A vernier caliper is used to measure the dimensions (length, width, and height) of a rectangular
block. The reading is shown in diagram. Calculate the volume of a rectangular block!

Main scale : 1.70 cm

Vernier scale : 0.02 cm

Final reading : 1.70+0.02 = 1.72 cm

Main scale : 0.30 cm

Vernier scale : 0.06 cm

Final reading : 0.30+0.06 = 0.36 cm

Main scale : 1.20 cm

Vernier scale : 0.05 cm

Final reading : 1.20+0.05 = 1.25 cm

Volume : LxWxH= 1.72x0.36x1.25 = 0.774 cm3
