Exercise 4 : Measurements

Name : delbert Cristian lipson. Date : …………….

1. The diagrams show the times on a stopclock at the beginning and at the end of an experiment.

How long did the experiment take?

Answer : 3.5 second

2. The diagram shows a stopwatch, originally set at 00:00.

When a car was first seen, the stop-start button was
pressed. When the car passed the observer, the
stopwatch reading as shown.
How long did the car take to reach the observer?
Answer : 1 minute and 6 second

3. A cyclist rides round a track three times.

Her friend uses a stopwatch to record the time at

the start of the ride, after one circuit, and at the
end of the three circuits. The readings from the
stopwatch are shown

What is the average time for one circuit of the track?

Answer : Total 600.00 - 6.00 Total time = 600.00 - 6.00 = 594.00 s

Average time = Total time / number of circuits = 594.00/3 = 198.00 s.

4. The pendulum completes 20 oscillations in 10 seconds.
what is the period of the pendulum?

Answer :
For one oscillation Time period = 10/20 =
0.5sec

5. Follow instructions bellow:

a. Open https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/pendulum-lab/latest/pendulum-
lab_en.html
b. Set up the apparatus as shown
c. Adjust the length of string to 30 cm
d. Pull the pendulum around 10o, gently starts the pendulum oscillating and starts the
stopwatch.
e. Count 10 complete oscillations, stops the stopwatch and records the time
f. Repeat the experiment 3 times for different lengths and records the data in the table

g. Calculate and record values of T in the table ( n=10 )

Period T
Length (l) Time for 10 oscillations (t) t
T=
n
60 cm 00:43.20 43.20/10 = 4.32 sec
80 cm 00:49.88 49.88/10 = 4.99 sec
100 cm 00:53.75 53.75/10 = 5.37 sec
