We celebrate today, the most mysterious event in the life of Jesus, who is fully God and fully man. It is
indeed a day of great sorrow, but also the day of our redemption because Jesus’ death gives meaning not
only to our suffering but also to our living. Let us recall this self-emptying act of Jesus to redeem humanity
from sin and bring life into the world.
Today’s celebration of the Lord’s Passion consists of 3 parts: the 1 st is the Liturgy of the Word with the
Solemn intercessions; the 2nd is the Adoration of the Cross; the 3rd is the Holy Communion.
The ministers will now come up to the altar, kneel and pray in silence. (Ministers come up)
1st Reading
In this passage of the Servant songs from the Book of Isaiah, God glorified his Servant because he was
willing to die for the sins of the people. His actions were like the sacrifice on the Day of Atonement that took
away the sins of the nation.
2nd Reading
In the second reading, Jewish converts to Christ, rejected by mainline Judaism but later they felt sorry for the
familiar institutions they left behind. The Letter to the Hebrews persuades them that Jesus replaces
everything they've lost. This passage explains why Jesus is a superior priest, compared to the priests of
Judaism.
The Liturgy of the Word now concludes with the Solemn Intercessions. All kindly rise.
