 101  STEC  Fall  2017

Worksheet  Week  3
Pre-‐discussion  questions.  Attempt  these  before  coming  to  discussion!
1.  In  each  situation,  describe  the  data  as  Accurate/Inaccurate,  and  Precise/Imprecise
a.  3  groups  of  students  measure  the  mass  of  a  product  from  the   A        Ina
same  chemical  reaction.  The  groups  recorded  data  of  8.83  g,  8.84   P        Imp
g  and  8.82  g.  The  known  mass  of  the  product  from  that  reaction  is
8.60g.  The  group  values  are:
b.  An  engineer  measures  the  length  of  a  rod  four  times  and  get   A        Ina
the  following  values:  317.6  cm,  298.2  cm,  302.2  cm,  and  280.6   P        Imp
cm.    The  manufacture  lists  the  true  value  as  300.0  cm.  The
engineer  is:

2.  Read  the  volume  from  this  example  of  a  graduate  cylinder  above.  Report  the  correct  number
of  significant  figures.  The  units  are  ml.

Methods  of  Measurements  (2.1)
In  the  following  statement,  circle  all  words,  values,  and  units  associated  with  extensive
measurements  and  underline  all  of  those  associated  with  intensive  measurements.  You  do  not
need  to  do  the  calculation  requested.
3. As the temperature of water decreases, the volume of a sample will decrease until a
temperature just above the temperature of the freezing point, 273 K.
4.  Below  are  a  set  of  measurements.  Identify  the  type  of  measurement  and  the  number  of
significant  figures.

17.25  cm   0.00068  pm
2.83  µL   1480000  cm3
32.400  kg   3600  seconds

Discussion  questions.  The  following  questions  will  be  done  during  discussion.
5.  Solve  each  of  the  problems  below.  Show  the  calculated  answer  (exactly  what  your  calculator
says!)    and  then  round  each  answer  to  the  correct  significant  figures.

Rearrange  the  equation  𝑃𝑉 = 𝑛𝑅𝑇      to  solve  for  R.      (Challenge:  can  you  solve  it  for    !?)

8.  Magnesium  has  three  natural  isotopes.  Given  the  mass  and  percent  abundance  of  each
isotope,  determine  the  atomic  mass.  Confirm  your  answer  by  consulting  a  periodic  table.

statements.
a)  The  production  of  nitrogen  is  190  %  of  the  production  of  ammonia.  A  lot  of  nitrogen  is
produced  but  not  used  in  making  ammonia.

b)  There  are  very  small  amounts  of  many  different  elements  in  the  body,  including  3  ppm
