Course Content:
Introduction: Understanding the objectives of the course and its scope; Historical evolution of engineering
materials; Introduction to some simple examples in selection and designing of materials;
Engineering materials and their properties: Introduction to broad class of engineering materials and their
important properties; Structure-property correlation; Role of recovery and recrystallization in microstructure
engineering;
Manufacturing Processes: Solidification processes like casting; Metal forming processes like rolling, forging,
extrusion and the role of temperature in these processes; Powder Metallurgy processes for ceramics; Joining
processes like welding, brazing; Thin film processes like PVD, CVD;
Materials property chart: Exploring and organizing materials and their properties; Representing maximum
information in minimal space via charts eg. the modulus-density chart, the strength-density chart, the fracture
toughness-modulus chart, thermal conductivity-electrical resistivity chart;
Material Selection Criterions: Motivation for selection; Product development, Constraints; Conflicting objectives;
Cost basis for selection; Shape factors; Establishment of service requirements and failure analysis; Quality Control;
Case Studies: Case studies on Material Design for Mechanical properties (Elastic Modulus, Static Strength,
Dynamic Strength, low temperature application, high temperature application); Materials Design for electrical
applications.
Grading Scheme:
Mid-Semester Exam: 15 Marks; Quizzes (2): 15 Marks
Case Study: 20 Marks (10 report + 10 video) End-Sem: 15 marks
Assignments: 10 marks In-video questions: 10 marks
Viva: 10 marks In-class interaction: up to 10 Bonus marks
