SUBJECT: Circulating while stuck

The region recently experienced a failure to transmit after the tool had been stuck for a day. During this time,
the tool sat idle and was not circulated through. When circulation was resumed, the tool did not pulse. The
cause was that the bell valve was stuck in the down position due to mud sediment ‘baked’ on the pulser.

In another incident, an AutoTrak tool was in the hole while the assembly was reamed out of hole without
circulation. This resulted in a substantial amount of damage to the tool.

In situations like these, the company man must be advised that the tool must be circulated through to maintain
the pulser. Circulation prevents sedimentation in the pulser. In addition, circulation cools down the tool and
prevents damage to the electronics and hydraulics. Circulation is not always possible when the assembly is
stuck. The company personnel must be informed, regardless if circulation is possible or not, however.

If the tool is stuck or is used to ream without circulation, inform the company man and the Baker Hughes INTEQ
office. A non-conformance must be filled out in all cases. If the company man refuses to sign the non-
conformance sheet, note it on the form and fax the form to the Baker Hughes INTEQ office immediately.
